well i went to my recent favorite beer store and decided i wanted to try some new stuff. picked up a fourpack of founders brewery's kentucky breakfast stout (as i understand it this is some very small batch beer and hard to get many places....the store wont sell more than one pack to any customer...it's also gotten some incredible reviews and ratings, so i thought i'd try it out...it was one of the only things without a price sticker, so i figured it would be like 10 bucks, but it was a whopping 20 dollars...oh well, live and learn. i should have asked first. but this stuff is aged in bourbon barrels, and so on, and all the other fancy hype about it...im anxious to try, but i'll have to make it last!)

i also made a mixed fourpack from some singles. a 500ml bottle of aventinus (i can't wait...tried it for the first time a couple days ago...its magnificent...easily overtakes a few previous favorites) a 12oz EKU 28, which i've wanted to try for some time, a 12oz of celis white because i liked the grand cru quite a bit and would like to taste this one, and a bottle of goose island reserve "demolition"

i also picked up a delirium tremens glass.

all together the 8 beers and the glass cost 38 bucks.

i'm going to need to go get some leinenkugels or gordon biersch or hell....maybe even strohs....this beer i got i look forward to, but i know myself well enough to know its probably going to be gone in a couple days if i dont get something cheaper to stretch it out!

well i wanted something cheap to help stretch out my good beer....

so when i went to the grocery for cleaning supplies i picked up a sixpack. i was going to get something pretty cheap (almost went for killians....12 beers for 8.99 isnt bad...and its sure better than budweiser) but i got intrigued when i noticed a leinenkugels beer i hadn't seen before...big butt doppelbock. the name was stupid, and the package had a pretty silly picture of two rams butting heads. poured in a glass it looked pretty good and smelled halfway decent (but lacked the characteristic richness of classic doppelbocks like celebrator). the flavor left quite a lot to be desired...thin and watery for the style. i looked it up and its a lot weaker than all the other doppelbocks i've tried before (though i've only had 4 or 5) which would help explain how watery it tasted. it was still pretty palatable though definitely a very poor example of a doppelbock. i will have no problem finishing the other five remaining, but i seriously doubt i will buy this again.

i also just finished the first of my kentucky breakfast stout, and i've got to say its been a while since i've been so overwhelmingly impressed with a stout.

its exquisite, and aging it in bourbon barrels makes a definite impact on the flavor. this is probably my new top favorite imperial stout, but in the future i'd be more likely to buy old rasputin russian imperial stout, which is the closest beer i've had to the kentucky breakfast stout but costs about half as much.

definitely and without any doubt kentucky breakfast stout has to be one of the very best beers i've had in a very long time, though the aventinus i had the other day was pretty incredible, too. and i might have another one tonight after dinner. maybe something else though, i really dont know. its hard to decide that kind of thing when i've got several i want to try.

i intend to try victory's storm king pretty soon, too, before it gets too warm (my apartment is on the third floor, ohio is incredibly humid in the summer, and we only have a wall unit air conditioner, and there is nothing in my bedroom but a strong fan...in the summertime heat its a lot harder for me to drink such incredibly heavy beers, though some of the more refreshing ones i'll still drink)

i can't really justify spending 20 dollars on a fourpack of beer again anytime soon, but i definitely feel this beer is one of the best i've had, and would love to be able to afford more.

tonight i'll have another glass of the kentucky breakfast stout, but first i'll have my first ever eisbock (want a perfectly clear palate when i'm trying it) which will be EKU 28...i'm pretty excited, actually, i've been wanting to try this beer for some time.

last night i also tried goose island reserve's "demolition," and was very pleasantly surprised. this beer is great, and while it delivers a relatively strong hop flavor and aroma, it is not so hoppy as to be unpleasant. its just right...

in fact, i highly recommend it and will likely try more from goose island's "reserve" line of beers. i was afraid because many american craft brews are far too hoppy for my tastes, and while it was very hoppy it was also quite delicious.

tonight, in addition to a glass of EKU 28 and a glass of kentucky breakfast stout, i'll probably tolerate a bottle of the big butt doppelbock....like many of leinenkugels beers, i've found it actually tastes better to me from the bottle. i think drinking this warm may help increase the body, too.

    well thank you.

there are three indulgant passions which i always want to know more about than i do, and thats beer (and to a lesser extent rum and scotch), cigars, and coffee. but of the three, beer captures my interest the most.

i've always been a sucker for a variety of substances, though. used to grow my own mushrooms, and anticipate becoming passionate about homegrown cannabis, once i've got a home all my own. helped my dad with a batch of homebrew, once, but need to get more into that. the other day i spent nearly forty dollars on a mere eight bottles of beer and a glass....i'm SURE i could save some money on brewing my own, even if its not by much. if nothing else it would be a fun and rewarding experience.

Passions are an important part of life, i'm a bit of a mushroom aficionado myself. Yes, growing/brewing your own is always more fulfilling, alot of times higher quality, and definitely cheaper.

In about 30 minutes I am going to crack open a smuttyhouse IPA for the first time. I hope it is a good ale. It was a nice discovery! The pictures on the boxes are pretty crazy!!! I was gonna get a 6 pack of sea dog (which I love) so this hopefully will be tasty!

I don't think its so much the smutty house as much as the fact I don't typically like IPAs that much. just something about the after taste it leaves in your mouth. I would try another SH for sure though in the future! well, off to drink more SH IPA anyways.
