Samichlaus is very good beer, but I don't think it's one of the best. As far as doppelbocks, I think Celebrator is much better. Samichlaus is just very strong.... but it is good and very drinkable despite its high ABV. It has an exceptional smoothness.

Well, I have to admit Im not an expert when it comes to Belgian beer :& I've had PLENTY of witibiers, but not so many bocks. I had one amazing one with DBW, when he logs in next time I'll ask him what it was, it was at an Octoberfest and it was super thick heavy stuff, he was saying some germans actually lived off it for awhile because of the amount of calories in it? Crazy :) I was pretty drunk though, he may remember the name. I've had some Heffeweizens as well, but for the life of me coudlnt recall the names of any of them, save for like, the Sam Adams heffe

Actually, bocks, doppelbocks and weizenbocks are German beers. I think that's what you meant.

haha :& Told ya Im no expert ;) But, am I at least correct with naming witibier being Belgian? Because I think the majority of white ale's I've tried where from Belgium and Holland

Yup, witbiers are pretty much exclusively Belgian, though there are some good ones made in the states, too.

doppelbocks are a style of german origin. samichlaus is brewed in austria, though. however, according to beeradvocate.com the brewery has existed since 999 (only commercially since 1681 though) and borders have changed quite a bit all over europe since then, so i guess the distinction is something of a moot point.

tonight....guinness extra stout and some taddy porter, same as last night.

i'm drinking some single malt scotch whisky tonight....

isle of jura 10 year....affordable as far as single malts are concerned, but expensive compared to my rums and beers.......still, only $32 for a bottle.

its damn tasty, though! i'm glad i got it...on my third glass

scotch is always a great companion to a nice cigar! nice and relaxing evening...

oh, and a couple nights ago i tried, for my first time, tripel karmeliet by brasserie bosteels! what an incredible beer....i can't stress enough how great this stuff is. its complex, tart with some sweetness and spice, a bit of a fruity note (i find it reminiscent of apple and apricot) and just a hint of hops. surprisingly effervescent and bright...a little lighter body than i'd expect, but still tons of malt. its interesting in that it makes use of three different grains....barley, wheat, and oats. none of these are unusual in beer, but in THIS beer they seem to all be simultaneously showcased, adding to the intricacies of the flavor. at 8% abv i was feeling relaxed after a 75cl corked and caged bottle....of course that didnt keep me away from any other beer, but still ;)

there are a LOT of expensive belgian beers out there, and this bottle cost me about 8 bucks....but its completely worth it. if you see this around your area, i highly recommend you try it - but i did find it a bit challenging, however delicious it was. this is a beer lovers beer, and i wouldnt recommend it to you if your idea of a phenomenal beer was corona...

    i found this pic: [IMG]

keep in mind its green glass, the pic i found is slightly dark. keep an eye out for this beer though, if you havent tried it! ideally it should be consumed in a tulip, like many strong golden belgian ales, but i had wonderful results serving it from a large snifter i usually drink from, since i cannot find tulip glassware anywhere i've looked...perhaps i'll have to order some more specialized glassware online someday

I am drinking a six pack of Saranac Adirondack Trail Mix. It consists of a mix of lager, pale ale, black and tan, and IPA. In the last week, while working in NY state, I've had a few of these and am not displeased. I do prefer the ales.
