Thank you all for your replies. They have been very informative.

My way of thinking kind of makes me stand out amongst my peers. I'm left feeling like an outsider around other young Black-Americans when it comes down to certain areas. While we are all human it can't be denied that we do have cultural differences. As a race, alot of us aren't as quick to embrace the unfamiliar and I was hoping to meet someone who could relate when it comes to this difference in particular. But I also hope to come in contact with many interesting people, race not an issue.

All in all, I love the forums. Especially Mind Fucked, I've stumbled upon so many of my own thoughts there it's scary!

    Thanks again everyone.

i can definately relate to you. You know how hard it is for me? I married a white man, live in aredneck town and have extreme "black power" family members. I really don't have anyone that understands (well, except my man). I know all about that difference.

Jimi Hendrix certainly was one. Ditto Sylvester Stweart, better known as Sly of Sly and the Family Stone. And what are we to make of "The President of the United States of Funk," George Clinton?

But if these three famous African Americans weren't hippies in their heyday, I know of at least one who is: Yours Truly.

Indeed, by 1968, Jimi Hendrix ran up against the tide of "Black is Beautiful" culturally and "Black Power" politically. His credibility in the African American community wilted after James Brown's chart-topping barn-burner, "Say It Loud! I'm Black and I'm Proud!" The music scene became rigidly segregated even before Hendrix died in 1970; he was the last black rock 'n roll star until Living Colour burst onto the scene in the late '80s.

It wasn't uncommon to see interracial hippie copules along Haight Street during the "Summer of love" -- primarily balck men and white women (which raised a lot of eyebrows and drove hard-core racists into total apoplexy).

Truth be told, the "flower children" were the first -- and only -- white people I came to know in the late '60s and early '70s who treated me as a human being. This, combined with their undisguised love for Native American culture, had such a profound effect on me -- being of mixed African and Native descent -- that without them, I know that I would not be what I am today.

I've been in love with the hippies and their culture ever since and I will carry that love with me for the rest of my life.

From videos of old concerts I've spotted a decent amount of black hippies(and I look out for that), but today there's definately lots of hippie minded black people we're just not all in the same places, haha.

I used to run with a lot of Blacks who were hippies. I am somewhat surprised a person would have to ask.

Bottom line. Hippies are people how want peace on earth. PEOPLE being the keyword here. Im more close to rastafarianism than Hippie. But anyone fighting for heaven on earth is a hippy. Buddhist, hindus, Jehovas Witness, minus the sex and drugs but youve got a reall hippy right there. No worries Im black and the most respected hippie east of the ohio river. Rember no flower is the exact same.

I disagree with this young lady on more than a few things, but she's right-on about this bullshit artificial social construct we call "race." Genetically speaking, there is only Homo Sapiens sapiens. One race. That's it. We all have different traits, like red hair or widow's peak, or phenylketonuria, but we are all one race. A recent book, The Race Myth, by (I can find the author if needed; he's an evolutionary Biologist) pretty much puts THAT bullshit to rest. But one will have an uphill battle convincing Amerika about that, regardless of skin color. And I daresay pinkskins and brownskins will be equally resistant to the idea. Programming, ya know.

So, yeah, there were hippies with a different color skin from me, but with the same way of looking at most things.

Oh, and Sullen_Girl? Polamory is a LOT of hard work, and most of those types of relationships don't survive. PM me and I can give you a link to a site where it's talked about and practiced by some.

You never watched Laugh-In? "You bet your sweet bippie!" :)

Seriously, though, I never heard it used in that context.

Seriousness aside, Laugh-In got away with a lot after it's "Doodoo-doo-doodoo-doo," such as "family jewels" and my all-time favorite "smack!"
