I like that idea Mellow - mass boycott! I heard somewhere recently of an effort to encourage people to not buy gas on Sunday's in protest of escalating prices. And we also know the effect the far right has had on the Christmas vs Holiday issue on a few major corporations like KMart and Lowes. Good idea.

I heard that on Good Morning America a few months ago, not to buy gas on sundays... why you ask cloner.. bc just one day of no revenue will put a dent in their pockets, and if it is done every sunday, they they will drop the price.

Now if you don't have anything nice to say, shut the fuck up and quit being so damn disagreeable to every one..

Never underestimate the power of a boycott.

No one driving cars anymore is a great idea, but how 'bout something a little less drastic, like driving a VW Jetta TDI, they get like 45+ mpg, and you can run 'em on bio-diesel, a renewable resource that smells like french fries.

Just read your thread BTW, some good points there. The thing to consider is any large scale change that may seem practical can have a huge widespread disasterous effect on the economy, and this may not be predictable, so these changes would best be gradual...

I've heard the alternative energy cars are rather pricey. So, as a compromise, how could one person convince a large enough group of people that it would actually make a difference, to sacrifice one day of driving their car in protest of high gas prices? It seems that doing so on a local level is the best bet. Posters, ads in the paper, or disseminating the information through a local group are some ideas. Who do you know?

Hey man, nobody likes a smart ass.
I have not heard you say one nice thing to anyone, I gave you the benefit of doubt but you just have nothing to say but counter-porductive BS... I have warn you before about your negitivity responce to everyone.. And no one is crying because of you. If you have something worthwile to contribute beside berating people I wouldn't say anything. I don't see your comments as debate, I see them as negitive input.

Not drive your car for one day.. give all the food to other countries.. anymore ideas.. how about not heating your home all winter or just stop eating all together, or hey lets stop buying food and fuel that will show them who is boss..
I don't know about everyone else, but I'm cut to the bare bone already. WE only go to town when nesscessary and we heat with wood we cut ourselves. We hunt and fish for our food, so I don't see that everyone can help by cutting back.. we're cut back about as far as we can be.

Yes, Coolner, I read your thread.

Hybrids are pricey (that was an alternative I looked at), and while they seem quite practical, there's the issue of the fuel cells to contend with, 'cause now you're driving around with a couple hundred pounds of chemicals that need to be disposed of, and more stuff can go wrong.

Jetta TDIs are no more expensive than other Jettas, but they're tough to find used (I spent six months trying to find mine). Everyone holds on to them, and for good reason, they get great mileage, and they're damned dependable.

Bio-diesel is also tough to find, but it's around, and it's becoming more readily available. I've also been reading about how to make my own, but the key is that it can be done, and it's not too far fetched (check out www.biodieselamerica.org for more info). It's comforting to know that I won't be SOL when the world's supply of oil runs out, or when the oil companies decide to gouge us again...

Wood heat's the way to go, we do that as well, though we do have an oil furnace as a backup (and incidently, I'm told I can use bio-diesel in that as well). I always get a kick out of how the oil delivery people get kinda disappointed when they see the wood pile outside...

Shameless, I think the best thing to do with folks like that, unless you just want them gone, is totally ignore them. He just does that to get attention and it's working...

Mellow, I might sound like a bloomin' idiot, but we have a THING for chevettes. They're getting damn near as hard to find as VW's any more. Think they stopped making them in '87. We've had them for years, and we live on a god forsaken dirt road that turns to mud and ice in the winter. Slap a set of chains on them and they will go as good as any 4 wheel drive! We have actually pulled 4 wheel drives out of ditches and up hills with one, shovelling a foot of snow with the bumper. My goal is to find a diesel engine for one and convert to bio. They actually did make some diesel ones, but they're VERY hard to come across. Chevettes are nearly indestructable. My teenage son has proved that over and over again... Rolled one over twice and drove it home!
Parts are relatively cheap, they're easy to work on, easy on gas, and you can haul amazing amounts of stuff inside with the back seat folded down. Not much more than a fancy go-cart really. I LOVE 'em! More than VW's even...

    trystn,
I had to think on this for a while, but I thought I'd throw this out there... What if you, being familiar with the advertising business, were to set up a website as sort of a hub to a wheel, and go about finding out about as many events and festivals for peace as you can and help to advertise these events in one nice central location. Collecting and dispensing info. You seem like a smart guy. You could go on a massive internet search for existing "stuff"by posting on alot of the appropriate forums in search of events to list. I'll send you info on our fest here in 2006, you could help spread the word about Goodstock too, and I'm sure there is alot more on the grassroots level...
Just an idea. God, I'm full of 'em...

First, how do you all do that purple box thing with the quotes from another posting??

Second trystin said...,Listen, not everyone will agree with what I think is a good idea, and that is cool. But we should spend more time supporting eachother's right to have an idea, and focus on the positives of it rather than shooting it down because we have a different idea, or none at all. Which is excellent advice.
Third, I have read a lot of really good ideas all with pros and cons but which ones will make the powers that be take notice.
Burning wood is good...so is burning corn. It burns cleaner than wood and is far more renewable. You can replace the material used in 120 days and all that goes into the atmosphere can be turned into to new corn in the spring. The down sides are that you are burning FOOD, and the initial investment is pretty steep.
Not buying gasolene on one day a week means I will just have to buy it on another day. I work a lot of weekends and that doesn't help me...but it is still a good idea and an attention getter. Long term it is better to buy more efficient vehicles and hybrids.
I have switched all of the lights in my house from incandesent to the little spiral florescent lights that are far more energy efficient and last for years instead of months.
I grow a lot of bamboo that doubles its mass every year to sequester co2. All of the trimmings and wood that I don't use gets ground up and composted along with the leaves from the trees in my yard. I use the compost back on the bamboo groves. I have a feeling that bamboo could be ground up and pellatized to be used as a fuel source for heating. It is far more efficient for growing for purposes like that that any species of tree, PLUS when you harvest bamboo you do not kill the plant even if you clear cut the grove because the heart of the plant is under ground.
I reuse walmart sacks fo lunch sacks, I reuse jars and boxes and recycle paper and news papers etc, etc, etc. It all helps.
The mood in the country is changing but a lot o the "silver hairs, farmers and average Joes" that someone mentioned a note or two back...are US.

But how is that going to help stop the incresing price of fuel? :H

hehe, I reply through my email notice then find that I am pages behind...
    go figure?

earthmother - sounds like a grand idea. Since I am in the process of building a site already, serving as a "information hub" for festivals and concerts is a marvelous idea. Please do PM me information about your event and any others you know about.

Thanks Voided37. I have been reluctant to post this because it might me kind of lame but what the hey. One way to indicate a certain pissed off level of frustration with gas prices would be to pick one day a week...all together, and drive like 45 mph or even slower. Go slower to use less fuel (symbolically) and make our presence known by visibily being there in the way if you have to drive somewhere that particular day. If enough folks do it all together we then make a statement and draw visible attention nation wide to what is going on. it's just a thought.

Yeah, but the question remains. How do you organize the effort? Do we all just make personal comittments and act individually? Or does someone gather the troops together to act in sync?

Tristn, to organize you first have to have a plan of action. A location (website) or other means of advertising your effort. Then you get the information out and see what interest it brings, if there is enough energy directed ino it, it will manifest itself as you progress.
