Unfortunately Christina is not visiting us today, so I cannot ask her how she would react. I imagine that she would not be overly concerned if the guy had no record of violence, but she may warn him not to carry it when he was in a bar or club, where it would have no practical use. It is the spate of killings among young black guys (mostly drug dealing is involved) that has made knives such an emotive issue in the UK at the moment.
In most states here in the USA, a 3" blade folding pocket knife is perfectly legal to have in your pocket. Longer ones tend to raise suspicions with dickheads, wheter or not he/she has a badge. You should be aware that it's generally illegal to carry a knife with a blade longer than 2" into any federal government building, such as a courthouse or police station. However, state buildings hang a sign up advertising that law as though it applied to them, and local municipalities pull this stunt, too, even though they are NOT federal property and therefore that law doesn't apply to them. They also illegally use this tactic to prevent ANY knives inside. Again, the federal law only applies to federal buildings, but states and local municipalities pretend it applies to them too. I carry a couple of folders with 2-1/2" blades as well as a CRKT having a 3-1'2" blade all the time, but I'm not taking any of these into any law-enforcement buildings at all. It avoids the stupid crap, such as "Why are you carrying THIS?!" My answer to all such questions is always the same: "Because I feel like it, you have no Constitutional authority to determine what my rights are, and none of my rights are subject to YOUR approval."
Thanks for that. I'm wondering...do you know the actual law regarding my questions, as far as carrying a pocket knife, or a lock-blade knife? In other words...your daughter may be very reasonable, and make great use of her common sense in such matters, but...I'm trying to determine the legal standing of such actions, say...in the face of a *less* reasonable officer, who may be lacking in common sense.
I should point out that my favorite knife, and the one I've carried and used almost daily for over 30 years, is a tiny Old Timer stockman knife with three blades of 2" or less. I gave the tinier one to my brother, and it had a 1-1/2" blade. These blades don't lock, but they are infinitely more versatile and generate no questions from law-enforcement types. There is nothing on the north american continent that I can't field-strip with one of these, and I highly recommend one to anyone who will listen.
I have the utmost respect for those teachers, students, anyone- who puts their lives at risk to save others. They don’t have to do it, but they made a very hard decision to do something that I’m sure their family wouldn’t support and would stop them if they could. There should be a national holiday to honor those people so that they are NEVER forgotten!!
This is the official government document and as you can see, if you end up in court, your fate will be down to a magistrate or district judge. I noticed that 4 years is the maximum sentence for simply carrying a knife, but I believe that this increases for carrying a weapon with intent to cause injury. Needless to say, this increases again once the knife is used. The categories are, malicious wounding, causing grievous bodily harm, attempted murder, and finally murder Selling, buying and carrying knives
Nope, he meant field strip, which means to disassemble. Field dressing is an expedient first aid bandage used in a combat environment, primarily used to stop the bleeding.
Field dress also means to remove the organs and such from an animal. When a hunter kills his prey, he field dresses it before taking it home. I understand what field stripping means. Perhaps you're correct, and I misunderstood him. I assumed that he meant what I described, since a small pocket knife is capable of that, but not overly useful for field stripping anything. Not that it's meaningful in this case, but I believe that field stripping also refers to the method used by military service members, after finishing a cigarette, to dispose of the remains. That may be unique to U.S. military...I don't know. I guess we may see what Varmint actually had in mind, if he responds.
