    I was just kidding.

Isn't this not the first time that a conflict has started under the global cover of the Olympics?

And Saakashvili's appeal to western values is just painfully tragic to watch. The European Union is full of anti-conflict moral relativists who will not raise a finger to save Georgia, The United States is led by a inconsistent and morally fibreless President who does not have any concept of a real spine, and NATO can't even figure out how to shoot their guns straight in Afghanistan.

The President of Georgia is right, Reagan would have the courage to point out that what Russia is doing is morally abhorrent in no uncertain terms.

No one in the State Department would do that now, Bush won't do it. Obama probably won't do it either, and while McCain would, I just don't see him doing it with half the effectiveness of Reagan I admit.

God help us all. Its 1936, and the Germans are re-occupying the Rhineland.

South Ossetia is legally part of Georgia but since 1992 has had de facto independence and close ties with Moscow with a Russian peacekeeping force in the region.(which the Russians you could argue have a right to do since most people in South Ossetia do have Russian citizenship). Georgia has for years claimed Russia has been funding the rebel group there. In the few days before this fighting had been seriously picking up between Georgia and the rebels, after a ceasefire was made, it lasted a whole few hours before fighting resumed, Georgia then began to launch an all out offensive to regain control of the region(remember that part to people who put all the blame on Russia, while Russia should've shown much more restraint being the power it is and is now attacking things way beyond the scope of the local separatist problem, you could argue Georgia was the one who lit the fuse) from the rebels which lead to Russia sending in it's troops into very active duty against Georgian forces.

First of all, this is getting plenty of coverage in the popular media.

This can be interpreted in a number of ways.

First of all... it's not surprising, Russia has been supporting the rebels economically for years.

Russia could have done this simply to establish itself as a world power on the wake of the eve that practically marks China's acceptance into the Western World and the acknowledgment of it as a super-power. (yes, the Olympics go beyond sports)...

But even that would be an exaggeration.

All in all, Russia wants the land... probably for oil. They've had troops on the border for a while, performing "military exercises".

All in all, Georgia will end up being annexed... it's not like they don't know what it feels like to be a part of Russia anymore.

The smart thing for Georgia to do right now would be to surrender right away and spare a whole bunch of lives. There is no way it could defend itself against Russia.

You are completely and totally insane if you believe that.

Agreed, so many paranoid nut jobs want a way to connect this into the giant right-wing oil crazy world conspiracy, ignoring the decades and centuries of ethnic and religious fighting and competition that has been going on.

    Biased website, biased article.

Israel would never publically go against Russia, hell... no one would.

Just as Israel would never support Georgia (out of all countries), a country with a 10% Muslim population... and all simply for oil... especially when Georgia has no chance to win this conflict.

    This is beyond ridiculous.

I compared it because, in terms of importance in world affairs and actual people at risk, ex-presidential candidate John Edwards sleeping around isn't that big a deal.

And when I read about the tanks going into Ossetia online, I immediately turned on the news expecting coverage of this major event. Instead I got "in-depth analysis" and commentary on the scandal of John Edwards. It was frustrating because I really wanted to know what was going on.

And Georgia is no doubt shitting its pants. Russia has just put more tanks in Ossetia than Georgia has in its entire armed forces.

    GEORGIA
    Total personnel: 26,900
    Main battle tanks (T-72): 82
    Armoured personnel carriers: 139
    Combat aircraft (Su-25): Seven
Heavy artillery pieces (including Grad rocket launchers): 95

    RUSSIA
    Total personnel: 641,000
    Main battle tanks (various): 6,717
    Armoured personnel carriers: 6,388
    Combat aircraft (various): 1,206
    Heavy artillery pieces (various): 7,550

As far as I can tell, and I still haven't made up my mind yet, it seems like a border flare up in the Caucus that will be over in a few days. As far as I can tell I mostly agree with Russia's position here.

I agree that this is more important than some Senators affair. I'm glued to the news today.

Exactly, and as inhabitant of country which was in pretty similar position as Georgia, I can only tell you not to believe everything you hear...There's great media war happening as well and no one should discuss this topic as they know all the facts, because the facts, when it comes to war, are crooked and deformed......

If this Georgia thing carries on for a few more weeks, I might fly there and join the International Brigades, Hemingway style.

Only the teenagers on here think this is funny.

If war didn't make money, it wouldn't be used so often.

For the record I don't think it's funny. I'm just lighthearted today. I mean, the Soviets are sending in more troops to the region and it's a really contradictory and hypocritical thing for ol' heavy hand Uncle Russ to do.

Bosnian Serbs have no right to independence, but Kosovo Serbs do. Serbian Serbs are SOL, and the whole thing is one big parade. The theatre of absurdity has drawn the curtains and we've all got front row seats.

It's bound to get worse at this point before it gets better, IMO.

This is thread about Georgia and not about Serbia, luckily there are plenty of those about Serbia and I can't repeat the same old lines about Kosovo or Bosnia...Almost every day I hear stories from my relatives, my friends or their parents who had to escape from there in order to save their lives, I know how hard it is for them for not being able to go back to their homeland and none of the people who have nothing to do with these places here but watching media stories have no right to discuss this matter because there has been a mess that you can't dream of and couldn't possibly understand...

So, I have to right to talk about Russia?

How can I understand social conflict if I don't talk about it?
