Okay, so I want to teach myself the electric guitar. Is that possible? I just basically want to play the songs I listen to, like learn tabs and stuff. Can I do that without lessons? My roomate plays guitar, so he could probably help me out a little. And also, how long does it usualy take before you can play songs? I'm not impatient, just curious. I'm a freshman in college, and have tons of free time, so I've got the time to learn.

It'll take you the rest of your life to learn the guitar. It took me several months to learn a basic song [house of the rising sun]. I'm still perfecting it and I've been playing just under a year. The first few months can get frustrating as you can't really play shit all and progress seems nil. Once you get your basic chord changes down and begin working on some of those songs that you can recognize, you'll be filled with an unbelievable joy which in turn will motivate you. Progress is slow, for me at least... but it's not a race to get to the finish. The more you play the better you'll become. So practice, it's better than sitting in front of the TV or computer.
