I experienced sleep paralysis for many years with hallucinations since i was a small child and the thing still happens, usually in streaks of various nights. I also opened one thread about this issue.
at some point years ago while i was still at the high school I started enjoying and even inducing episodes, mainly after lunch taking a short nap. Recently I had a real weird hypnopompic hallucination episode early in the morning, in brief i saw distinctly CLOWNS in black overalls and bowlers dancing in front of my bed, and a chopped-off right hand floating before my eyes with a finger pointed at left. (creepy huh?) apart from the fun stuff, I want to stress the point that the general awareness about SP should be spread 'cause there are still many frightened people around wondering if they're going nuts or have a brain cancer or if the devil/aliens/jacko are attempting to abduct, kill or butt-rape them and stuff while they could relax and live better knowing that it's just a mostly harmless and to some extent funny phenomenon. i also suspect that there are people who suffer with this condition and still dont talk about that , thus condemning themselves to live in perpetual fear.

No luck, I keep falling back to sleep. Can you recommend any literature?

yeah man..when you're laying there you need to remain awake...the visions will come and you need to watch them like you are watching a movie.

you go to sleep when one of the visions carries you away.

    so just wait...

I will keep trying. I was pretty sleepy when i attempted it. I've never experienced exactly what you are talking about but I did unintentionally have a dream months ago and at some point I REALIZED I was dreaming. I didn't do anything spectacular or see anything mind blowing but I did have a good time flying around a bit while being aware that I was taking advantage of what I thought was a rare opportunity to control my dream. I didn't know there was a way to practice this. Pretty sweet.

What are some of the things that can block one from experiencing this? I heard you've got to deflate your ego, and I've got a big ego (not egotistic, but egocentric - there is a difference). I also tend to hold onto certain beliefs or theories, and I heard this can hinder one's chances of experiencing things like this.

I don't see why either of these things would come into play here. Not an expert by any means but I would imagine that you could indulge both you ego and your religious beliefs if you were to be in a state of awareness within a dream.

You need to just let go, ego is self awareness...essentially that's what this is all about. Just practice the method I explained in the first post.

I think I might need coaching.

I've tried a few times without much success. One of two things happen: either my mind drifts and I fall asleep without realizing it, or each and every inch of my body starts itching which makes it hard to fall asleep or relax. This was the same problem I had when practicing meditation.

It's also hard to get 4 to 5 straight hours of sleep since my wife and I are being woken up every 2 to 3 hours by our 3 week old daughter, but it happens every now and then. When I look at my clock and notice it's been at least 4 hours since I was last awake, I try the technique (but never quite get there).

I'm also not following your technique to the letter. I don't keep a dream journal but I do recollect a few dreams I've had in the past. I also don't get up to pee (don't know how essential that is).

I'm in no rush though. Sometime between now and when I die, if I keep at it, it should eventually work. It's not like it requires time or effort anyway.

    Any suggestions?

Definitely keep a journal. Just get something cheap and keep it by your bed. Write down everything you remember.
    This is very important.

    Also, REM cycles every 1.5 hours. 1.5, 3, 4.5, 6,
after these cycles is when it's key to wake up and try the wake induced lucid dreaming method.

Learn to try and forget about the itching, and just lie there...you just have to practice.

The more weights you lift, the more you will be able to lift.

The more you practice your awareness, the more aware you will be.

Are dream journals really that important? I never write anything about my dreams down, and if I do they are usually poetic rather than descriptive.

Yes...I know this for a fact.

What happens is you when you write down your dreams, you create physical triggers where you can recall each and every dream. Triggers that bring back memories. It's hard to explain...but with a dream journal the more you write down, the more you will be able to write down.
Also, keep it in the same place. Let your brain know exactly where it is, so that when you wake you can just write down some words that will remind you of the dream.

This is one of the essential aspects of this practice.

I got really close to doing this yesterday, not with this method though.
I laid down and let it happen. I was stoned, which aided me greatly in getting to the "breaking point".... but at the same time, it stopped me right before the finish line...
I feel my first time projecting should be in a clean state, and the anxiety of that held me back...I could seriously feel my astral hands though. whenever I looked up, I could see a light on the outskirts of my vision, very cool.
no point in getting into details
    maybe tonight

I was once smoking herb sitting straight up in my bed when I was blasted out of my body for no reason...

Let go of anxiety, and fear...

    Might want to start fresh.
Just dedicate a journal to your dreams and keep it in the same spot.
    This is very important.

this method sounds really interesting. I'll definitely have to try it soon. I don't currently keep a dream journal anymore, so I'll have to start that again.

Well, I can say that stalk served as a good coach ;)

Do substances such as alcohol and oxycodone make it harder to explore the astral realms?
