Wow, people pick such strange issues to argue over. I read the first page of this thread and thought "why, how interesting!" I never figured anyone could be "vegist" (*shrugs* racists to vegitarians?!) So, anyway, here's my take on it. Not bashing anyone though! I eat meat strictly because there are some viatamins and nutrients in the meat that you just can not get from plants. Period! Also, if other animals in the wild kill and eat other animals in the wild to survive, why shouldn't we? After all, humans are animals! We have sharp teeth in the front to tear into meat. And our bodies need meat. It gives us loads of energy and helps develop our blood and make it healthy. I figure, if it walks like a duck, and talks like a duck, it must be a duck. We as humans are designed to eat meat. (I do not however eat red meat just for the simple fact of I don't like it! It also looks too gross and bloody!) Blessed BE
Actually our bodies AREN'T designed to eat meat at all. We don't have the sharp canines like carnivores do. We also have a long intestinal tract...like herbivores do. Carnivores have very short digestive tracts. We don't NEED to eat meat to survive. We are intelligent creatures that have freedom of choice...therefore, we should make the intelligent choice to NOT eat and kill other animals....simply because we have other ways of obtaining our food. Carnivores eat meat because that's their instinct...humans were gatherers before we began eating meat....meaning...we ate mostly roots and berries.
after reviewing this thread, I think we should let the carni's eat themselves into graves...survival of the fittest?
I've always had a desired to be veggie because I always thought it was healthy. But, there is that thought in my mind... don't we need meat? At least the nutriets from it? I mean, we don't just eat it for fun. I often frequent our local whole foods market and indulge myself in their fresh fruits. Also, if I were to go veggie, would could I substitute for the meat that I eat? We need protien etc.
There is protein in almost anything we eat...in fact Americans get 45% TOO MUCH protein, which is EXTREMELY unhealthy. You can go to the Vegetarian Forum and find out more. You can get any vitamin in any plant food that we need...and you get MORE than enough if you still eat eggs and dairy products. You can get protein from tofu, peanut butter, cheese (if you eat dairy), nuts, seeds, beans...etc.
Dixy, please see the veggie faq...it was made for questions like yours. Come over and chat with us. We have lots of new veggies, including southerners.
Agreed. Yarrow - Here's a page. It's actually kelp and red star yeast. I forgot about that... http://braindance.com/vegan.htm That's it from me. Heh heh. I'll stop poking the meat-eaters with a stick.
I have just looked at this link. It recommends canola oil! This is one of the worst vegetable oils that you can buy as it is high on trans fats that are really bad for you.
Soy -or rather unfermented soy - is not good for you. http://www.senselessplanet.com/soyhomo.htm http://www.westonaprice.org/soy/index.html
What person is a carni? Omni is a more correct term but even then it is broad term as there is a vast difference between junk food omni and a wholefood omni. As for eating themselves into graves and survival of the fittest, do you remember Astrocat who got banned from hipforums for chronic attacks against Skip? (Fair enough IMO) Today she is in a bad way, very week, has to get around in a wheelchair. Perhaps in the name of humanity, from one redhead vegan to another, you could suggest that maybe veganism is unsuitable for her body. Farm animals would understand. Since leaving hipforums, she has done her dash to date with another ten forums. If she was to put butter on everything she ate like I do, she would be a bit more good natured like I am. She stopped communicating with me a couple of years ago after Didgeroodoo pulled her knickers down and became sexually jealous. I think there might have been a trajgedy of the bedroom though. So much for raw food being healthy.
Duncelor, i find it strange that you can accuse vego's of having a holier than thou attitude when it seems that you have one yourself .. dont you think that its a bit unfair to judge a person on there eating choices anyway ... i will choose not to eat meat because i dont like the idea of animals being killed for me when i can survive without them and the thought of eating meat makes me feel sick but every vego chooses it for there own personal reasons, the people that still eat fish may do it for health reasons or for convenience .. but who are you to question that?
The original poster suffers from the same disease he preaches against. However, I appreciate the fact that on both sides (as with all arguments) there can be that pure, holier than thou, annoying "You're wrong because you disagree" attitude. So lets not just pin vegetarians but all self righteous ignoramuses.
bilby, you are as emphatic about butter as Astro was about veggieness (she was through three phases in her short time here. Of course I remember her. I removed her several times) sometimes it;'s all about the balance of health and treading lightly. we all seem to pick different points to start.
I'm a vegetarian becasue I felt sick when I had thoughts about the chicken I was eating running around. However, that's just me. I've never tried to turn any of my friends vegetarian and I don't mind other people eating meat around me, I'm not eating it, so why should I mind? Nor do I give people who aren't vegetarians stick unless they give me stick for being a vegetarian first.
I'll check out the kelp and red star yeast. I still eat some dairy so I may be getting the B12. I really have not been very diligent about checking nutrient labels (other than for what chemicals and other products may be hidden in them since I stopped eating meat). This morning while making a smoothie, I looked at the soy milk label and 8 oz has 15% of RDA of B12.
I know America has the rates of overweight people in the world, with Australia coming in a close second, but where I live there are an unbelievable number of fat ladies. There all seem jolly. Consumption equals fulfilment. There was once a woman in town who had legs like a hippopotamus.
Yarrow, I don't know who said it first about B12, I'm not sure if they are referring to Vegetarians or Vegans, because there is a difference. Vegetarians obtain their B12 through calcium, eggs, etc. Basically the things that Vegans don't eat. It's the vegans that must supplement their diet for B12, not vegetarians. It's a common misconception, but basically - you're good. As for the whole debate of veggie/omni - it's all about moderation. On both sides. Too much soy is bad for you, just like too much meat. Balance, like with anything, is optimal. Drumminmama is right, we must tread lightly upon the Earth.
