people consider plants to be a nonviolent diet since vegetables want to be eaten but don't animals sometimes want to be eaten as well?... the lakota sioux say about the american buffalo... "the bison gives itself so the people may live"

The meat-eating habits of the American Indians are so distanced from the meat factories that produce our hamburgers today that the reference is pretty obscure. However on a more practical note i would like to throw out the idea that maybe wild animals (esp deer) do need to be killed in order to maintain a balance within nature and to prevent huge plagues of animal disease (Molly i think this was part of your point... if i'm wrong just let me keep believing it).

I personally am a "just don't tell me" Vegan.... ie I am not the person in the restaurant who takes 30 minutes to order because they have to ask how everything is prepared. If I know soemthing has eggs or butter in it I steer clear. It has helped me to feel alot healthier in recent months but all my friends think I am trying to convert them.

If you do decide to go Veg you should know why you are doing so first... no there is nothing wrong with the concept of just not eating anything with a face but there are sooo many more reasons than just that. Think. Does your religion justify it? Does the harm it does to the environment justify it? Is it economically more sound? Are the working conditions at these factories dangerous? Are the hormones in meat dangerous?... for me all signs point to never eating meat again unless it happens to be deer and well i haven't faced that yet.

    good luck

You can't be a hippie and eat meat. It would be like joining the NRA or voting for W.

That's not true at all, in fact most people I'd consider the most hippie i know eat meat. And alot of hippies maybe not support the NRA but do support gun freedom as fundemental freedom.

    ahahaha, that was really funny.

    anyway...back to topic...

    * No you don't have to be veg to be a hippy. It's more important to be comfortable with who you are (and also with what you aren't).

*If you are going veg because you want to be a hippy you are going veg for the wrong reasons. You should go veg because you want to go veg - it's a big lifestyle change and doing it only to fit in with people will make harder.

    * the whole fish/no fish thing. It may sound anal to say that someone who only eats fish is not a vegetarian...but it's the truth. This isn't a value judgement - you are'nt a bad person if you eat fish, but you aren't a vegetraian. I mean if I only slept with white guys that wouldn't make me celibate...

so yeah if you only eat fish you are a pescitarian...using that term makes it easier for everyone in the end - people won't be afraid of serving you fish and they won't mistakenly serve the vegetable eaters seafood, assuming vegetarians eat it. Everyone wins!

You can eat flax or even hemp from the health food store instead of fish to get omega 3's...this way you get no mercury or PCB's.. and you get to support the hemp movement at the same time.

I've been veg for 2 years.

I've never even heard of the term Pescitarian!! Where I come from, if you don't eat cow, pig, poultry or mammal of any kind then you are a vegetarian. I think it's a category someone decided to make up since I've been vegetarian. All the veggies I know eat fish. I don't eat alot of fish, twice a week perhaps, I somehow don't think that is going to kill me.

As for the article on how filthy the seas and waterways are.... well on the UK coastline the water is constantly tested to make sure that it is safe and Salmon are often farmed in the crystal clear, pure water of Scotland. All food goes through rigorous testing to make sure that it is fit for human consumption. Where is the evidence that fish are too poisonous to eat?
