I didn't address those other things you mentioned because I don't think they are terribly relevant. They are extremely isolated incidents and they are very rare.

Not relevant??? Isolated incidents??? Hardly a day goes by without another shooting rampage or bombing.

Oh, now I know you're infected... Just kidding.;)

OK, I'm not going to continue to say your concerns aren't valid, I just don't think throwing big brother at us is going to make all this go away.

We are already on a slippery slope as it is. ( as illustrated with the facial recognition shit I posted)
Mostly, I think we all need to keep cool heads about all this and try not to be so reactive.
We need to get to the root of things so we can weed them out
    permanently.
The biggest gift we can give terrorists is to freak out.

    A person just can't shoot straight when they're freakin':D

I'm hard-pressed to understand how creating a technology to deter terrorists is "throwing big brother" at you.

The biggest gift we can give terrorists is to freak out.

I'll say it one more time ... I don't for a second believe that we can't come up with a simple, inexpensive way to detect weapons and thereby deter terrorists at public gatherings ... churches, schools, nightclubs, shopping malls.

Exactly how is that "freaking out"? Wouldn't you say that sending thousands of troops halfway around the world to fight a stupid war that is not making the slightest difference is a better example of "freaking out"?

These incidents happen almost on a daily basis. It's been seven years since the Towers went down. Are we any safer from terrorists than we were then? No, we are not. It's obvious that any crazy person with a gun can walk into a church or school or shopping mall and start shooting any time he feels like it.

All I'm saying is ... what we're doing now isn't working. We're not stopping these people. At the same time, we have the smartest, most creative technical minds in the world. Challenge them to come up with some new technology that will help stop the whackos from getting into the churches and schools and shopping malls.

If you think this can't be done, then I say your thinking is too narrow and too limited. You need to expand your vision.

All right ... I've made all the points I have to make. I won't say anything more about this.

NASA is one of the biggest cluster fucks going. It's time to pull the plug and turn it over to the private sector and do away with cost-plus contracts, they breed nothing but waste.

Yes, I would say Bush freaked out and gave Bin Laden exactly what he wanted.

and National Geographic had it all on film... Bush did exactly what OBL told him to.

Hey, sorry, but i beg to differ ~

What does "privacy" have to do with carrying a concealed weapon, ILLEGALLY, into a school, church, government facility, etc.?!?

i have to disagree there, too. i believe that Bush (where Bush = we/theU.S.A./Bush/theBilderberggrp ~ insert preferred option ;) ) may have made an under-the-table deal with Saddam, that backfired, horribly, and Bush kept Saddam distracted until it was too late for Saddam to do anything. (Ever stop to think that it COULD have been BUSH that supplied the makings for the WMD? That THAT's why he was so sure that he would find them? Maybe he did it to help them start some power plants, but Saddam stabbed him in the back, and THAT's when he realized what was really going on, and the depth of the shit he was in.) Just saying...

Anyway, we're scrambling, guy! If you can't notice the:

    A) sounds of more, and unusual (for your area) aircraft flying around at all hours of the day and night;

    B) the way we are being "made-ready" (from a Navy term ~ the "make-ready room") to stand UP, as a nation, with local militias (which, imho, are being ENCOURAGED) and this new Youth Organization Union (YOU, for short), etc.;

and C) offers of good jobs for Senior Citizens? (WithIN the Military/Industrial Complex, of course ~ but for what? Other than the obvious, which, any competent and complacent Seniors would be KEPT for? Experimentation? ). ~

then you aren't paying close enough attention...

    No kidding. Wonder why?

imho, it's our Constitution and our Bill of Rights.

    But check this out:

It would appear that EVERY TIME some sort of Deregulation has happened,

that sector, whatever it might be,

    goes utterly BERSERK with Power.

If there is no "police force" (TRUE oversight) to enforce the laws,

there might as well not BE laws.

Man, the Palestinians ELECTED Hamas, DEMOCRATICALLY. THEY wanted those jokers in power, and the majority agree with Hamas' actions.

    Talk about something backfiring...

    Not really...

This newest clown, Mr. O-Bozo, is dirt dumb AND has no taste, whatsoever.

    And after watching that film?

"the story you are about to see is true; the names have <NOT> been changed to protect the ..."

    guilty.

I agree. I gave up on NASA early in the shuttle program. They never regained their momentum after Apollo 17. Up until that point, it was a great American success story.

Okay "why don't all schools have metal detectors"

    http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&sou...98,-119.796236&spn=0.002734,0.004823&t=h&z=18

That is the high school I went to.

Nine buildings, including a rifle range, for, yes, the rifle team.

it would be impractical to install metal detectors at each building (an effective shooting would happen outside anyway) and idiotic to install one outside.

Taking away weapons isn't going to stop terrorism.

How much terrorism happened in america in the 1950's? honestly? My dad used to take his shotgun to school, because he was going hunting after. It wasn't a big deal. Were I to do the same thing I'd be in jail

Domestic terrorism is a social issue, not an equipment\logistics one

The same is EASILY said about international terrorism, you should be worried about the fact that we are starting more people down the road of training instead of how we can disarm people who are too stupid to get around simple means of detection.

In the first place, they're not talking about metal detectors. You did read the article, didn't you?

And anyway, is it more "practical" to cart dead bodies away to the morgue?

No, it will only stop bloodbaths where those weapons might have been used to shoot up shopping malls, schools, or churches.

The world is a much different place now. You may have noticed.

I don't know what "you" you're talking to, but I didn't say I wasn't worried about terrorist training. But as of this date, the war against the Taliban and al Qaeda isn't exactly going well.

And it seems to me that anyone who is so irresponsible that he honestly thinks it's ok to allow guns to be carried in schools is worthy of the label "terrorist" himself.

    I totally agree.

But this issue isn't really about guns, per se. It's larger than that. Despite the paranoia of right-wing gun nuts who want to turn everything into a debate over the "right" of schoolchildren to carry AK-47's, the issue is using smarter technology to thwart terrorist acts instead of being deluded that a vague war halfway around the world will be able to do that.

And as you say, granny, it's beyond metal detectors as well. We need to broaden our thinking and not be limited to current halfway solutions. The technology mentioned in CNN article may be it, or it may not. Let's give it a chance to show what it can do.

I'll say it again, this shit contravenes that great pillar of civil society - the presumption of innocence.
There are some of us who believe that we have fundamental human right to go about our business without being spied on!
