The reality acga, is that every one of your claims about how a person who avoids killing others is a coward depends on one certain crux of your argument, however, this crux is an illusion that you and many others in this country have created, or in your case as having been a soldier, accepted, in order to justify your actions. And this keystone to your illusion is the concept of providing safety, which in fact is as far from the truth as possible. Wether you believe it or not, and no matter how many animals who eat other animals you care to bring up and equate mankind to, the fact is that Love always wins, and if it takes the extermination of the entire human race for Nature, who is love in essence, to prove, than so be it because it will happen if this direction were headed in gets out of control. I personally think harmony, which is the function of not only our reality's inner structure but is also how EVERYTHING is run, will root out negative impulses in the end. It is not a dog eat dog world, there are just people who are selfish and greedy in power and control of money who make it seem that way, and your inability to fight the real evil only adds to the agenda of destruction. Defending yourself is one thing, killing masses of people for NO REASON is entirely different and anyone who supports that deserves the worst pain in repremandation possible.
    Namaste -

    ^Indeed.

All we're tring to explain here, is to prove that the world is not necessarily a Dog Eat Dog world, and that's not the only way to go. It's an illusionary statement to affirm that, because humans have the capacity to make anything out of their world with the self-consciousness we have. But that self-consciousness provides us with even more ways to interact with another, love, compassion, good intentions. This possibility is HERE, just as much as being Dog Eat Dog is HERE. So why form a world based on bad intentions, on egotism when we have the capacity to create a world based on good intentions.
That is all I'm trying to say, but you keep on neglecting those affirmations and decide to live in your sheltered illusions of a Dog Eat Dog world.
And fine, if you want me to escape from philosophy text books (although really all I've been saying has been stated by anthropologists mostly and not philosophers), that Maslow pyramid you seem to use all the time is from the Humanism psychology that states : " If anything, there is the recognition that living up to one's potential is hard work and requires the help of others. The ultimate goal is human flourishing; making life better for all humans. " (Even in that psychology where you seem to enjoy their concepts the main grounds are built on altruism)
Not only does this go completely on the opposite to everything you say but Humanism is also one of the major psychology branches that is the most debated about it's true sense. And if you keep learning about the Maslow pyramid you realise that what it says is that once someone has all those needs satisfied, just like you and me, we become humanitarians, people who work on making this world a better place for everyone. (Could this mean you are missing one of the human needs? Perhaps you are in need of love? Perhaps you never understood this pyramid was made for humans who are capable of feeling higher things on top of the pyramid, on the contrary to animals.)
Anywho, I don't agree with Maslow on many points and you shouldn't base your life ideals on thys pyramid that you misinterpret to prove that the world is , and ONLY is Dog Eat Dog.
You do not realize you are the one sheltered, I do see the possibility of the world being Dog Eat Dog, but it's an illusion people create when they are full of bad intentions.

I'll let King Crimson sum it all up :
    "Knowledge is a deadly friend
When no one sets the rules.
The fate of all mankind I see
Is in the hands of fools."

    Are you fuckin kidding me?

Ignorant people like you are the reason this country isn't safe. People who think that we're "safer" or "better off" because we rushed into a country with a crumbling infrastructure, stomped on all they're beliefs and ideals, then killed hundreds of thousands of innocent civilians, are the whole reason we have anything to fear in the first place.

Then, to make matters worse we're trying to instate our own puppet democracy (which is failing miserably) at the cost of hundreds of American soldiers lives. I bet you wouldn't be talking about "leeching" if you were over in Iraq getting shot at by 12 year olds with Ak's.

    Amen to that.

But the fact of the matter is, there will never be a draft for Iraq. It just wont happen. There will only be a draft if our lives are seriously in danger.

study for exams for a little while and look what I miss.

Surely. First off, I consider myself a practical peacenik, or someone who works and supports peace yet accepts the world's reality that peace is something that will never be attained. Humanity and conflict are too closely linked to end all forms of violence, whether it is between countries or between people.

That being said, I support the draft mainly because I see it leading to less war. Imagine if the draft had been in place before the Iraq War. It would have taken a lot more evidence than the meer speculation and questionable intelligence that was given, to convince every family in America to send its sons off to die. The draft makes every person in the country have a direct intrest in the actions of our military.

Instead, we have these smoldering peacekeeping missions in Iraq and Afghanistan fought by a mercenary army which fights mainly for money and college scholarships. And the affect of this is that the war has very little impact on American's in the middle and upper classes. Undoubtedly the government realizes this and knows that general resentment will be slower to generate when there's almost no affect on the populace of a country at large. Even the financial impact is being soften so you, the average citizen, doesn't feel the one true impact the war has on you. Instead of raising taxes to fund our war machine, we've just taken out loans from China and Japan.

The fact is, I don't know anyone directly who is fighting in Iraq/Afghanistan and I can bet a lot of the populace is the same. A draft would change that, and hopefully fix the problem of the general apathy on the topic.

Yeesh, time to smoke a bowl and get back to studying.

The issue here is that the draft in and of itself is wrong. To force someone into having to kill people, no questions asked, no choice is wrong. Neither men nor women should be drafted. We're a free country. Shouldn't serving said free country be subject to freedom of choice? Boys can go to jail if they refuse to sign up and are denied necessary things, like a driver's license. This is just outrageous.
And on the note of women being capable enough to be drafted, I think the answer is that the average woman simply is not. (Even some men get turned down because they aren't in the proper physical condition.) Men are conditioned from birth to be strong and harness emotion. Women are encouraged to embrace their emotion. We're conditioned to be intelligent and beautiful, so most of us aspire to just that. Some women are kick ass girls that work out and are tough and can handle something as intense as combat. More power to them. But I for one could not be expected to go to Iraq. I'd cry just at the thought. A lot of us would just fall apart if we saw someone get shot to death or blown to pieces, especially if it was a comrade, or having to actually take a life.
As I've gotten older, I've come to understand and accept the gender roles more. That doesn't mean we're limited to them, certainly not. But they are a part of our identities and it does influence who we become.
Maybe I'm wrong, I'm just basing this on my experience as an average woman.
