Thanks Jack. We try to reuse things and use what others find unusable as much as we can. The prices at places like Lowes..home depot etc. are astronomical. Last year a 4x8 sheet of osb was 6 dollars, now it is13-16 dollars...and its just wood chips glued together....rip city out there. And now we're starting to hear "now, we charge a gas surcharge" from some places....we just bought a carpet fro the room th eother day and it was a small local company, the guy was really nice and when I asked if he could do better on his price he came down a dollar on each square yard and .50 on each square of the padding. When we went to pay I asked him if he could keep Uncle Sam out of it if we paid cash...and he smiled and said "Hell Yes"(saved us almost 20.00 in tax) then he had his guys deliver it for 10.00. I love people like that. Never hurts to ask for a better deal, especially if you're paying cash.
why take the tarpaper off? are you going to put tyvek on? i would side right over it! helps with wind seperates the two woods ect. but very nice i have a small never ending house myself! nail on my freind! peace
Yes, often times, a small business man can always cut a deal. Especially if he believes you are going to be purchasing other flooring from them. I don't know if you have all your flooring done but if you don't, that could have been his insintive(sp?). But always if you live in the country.. you will always find real good people who understand money situations. I know what help we needed repairing the house, we'd always have 1 or 2 good guys willing to do the work for free out of good heart. Those guys are what inspire me to be a kind man... generally
WE have a vapor barrier on the inside so we will take the tarpaper off to prevent condensation from building up in the walls. That room is on the north side...oh so cool for the summer but run the risk of mold, mildew and moisture. We double walled it..there is a 6 inch space between the 2 walls with 6" of insulation and its doubled in the attic space also. We heat with wood so now it will stay toasty. You know of what I speak, flamekeeper, when you live in the country or the woods as we do its all neverending but so nice to do. Larry will be 60 this year and he is stronger than he's been since we lived in Vermont 34 years ago. He built a house up there too. And that one involved NO POWER TOOLS.....lol. It's a busy time of year now my friends. I have been working in the garden but that Jack Frost DIDN'T catch me this year!! haha...I have held off putting in any summer veggies and am so happy I didn't get as gung ho as last year...it snowed this past Sunday!! The week before we had 3 days in the 80's...AAACCCKKK!! But the maters, peppers squash and melons are all in here with me...mmmmhahahah. They won't go out till mid May...Hard to hold off 'cause I moved up here from NC, but I learned my lesson well. Jack the world could use ALOT more kindness...rock on sweetie!!! teepi
cool i get it dont wanna trap the moisture in hey heres a bit of insperation for ya!!!! i could use some myself !! tiller broke tractor got a flat all in the same day! arrr! i thought when you said sugar mnt. you were talking about nc. happy nailing peace
We've got most of our garden now, even th' maters.I'm such a disgrace to all here.I just bought a new doublewide. The price was more then competitive with just the building materials alone.I couldn't believe it.All that is available here is uncured green wood.I shudder to think of the settling that happens when it finally starts to dry.A friend of mine who owns a local coffee shop has been building his since last year, and the mold has been terrible, and he has some problems with the 2by's twisting a bit.I wonder how that will turn out once the drywall is up.On the upside,I plan on going totally off grid as soon as possible. With all the "sun days" we enjoy here,it will be well worth the investment.Peace to all.
Oh,very nice teepi. What about the roof?Comp?Wood?Would be fun to cut an appropriate tree, saw it into shakes and nail'em up yourself.I would certainly help you guys do that for nothing if I was closer.Anyway--have fun--scratcho---

just popped in to say hi. I've read your posts. Thanks all my friends. Very busy around here lately but will try to come back tonight or tomorrow and write more...off tot he big city today for a pressure tank and hot water heater. Putting in a running water system!!!! We hand dug a well (well, actually the auger was a BIG help) and have had water but had to hand pump. Now we are going to have RUNNING WATER!! For the past 3 years every time we go to the library I'm in the bathroom washing my face and hands in hot running water and I feel like "wow,HOT running water...what will they think of next!!"...like I'm Elly May...(or could that be Granny) Actually Larry and I have always wondered why the Clampetts moved away from their peaceful place in the hills. Heck, they already "had it all" in our opinion.... FLM, Our cat Harvest stays outside but we have to watch our step when we open the door as she likes to leave us "presents" on the stoop. {{{{Homey, POD,Scratcho}}}} Back later. Love, teepi
Oh, I'd say closer to Elly May; http://www.hipgallery.com/photopost2/showphoto.php/photo/4145/sort/2/cat/500/page/4 Damn, from now on I'm going to comb my hair before I sit down at the keyboard. Peace, poor_old_dad [ps.: All the stuff is almost ready......]
Teepi, I wanna see the progress!! Can't wait to see it all complete but if you actually work on your house, nothing is ever complete. Always something else to do to better your inhabitants. I don't know about Elly May and I don't know about Granny. For some reason, don't know actress name because I'm not a movie person but you look like the girl from Funny Farm with Chevy Chase. But they were city slickers gone woods and they sure seemed to hate it in the end
