Union or Confederate?

Thank you MadcapSyd, i get so tired of us getting blamed for all that. People think it is all isolated here, and all other people=good. Its part of the Union Myth, southerners will always be disregarded as back woods, ignorant and poor.

 

Wow, where I'm from, the yankees that come down to the south and stay (And don't move to South Florida and make their own yankee towns, THOSE suck >.< Taking over our states!) are more often called 'Smart yankees' than anything else.

The Confederate for sure those dam niggers would had never turn into rappers .....mmmm But on second thought we would had never had Mowtown . i settle for the Union. besides we still got Southern rock out of the deal.

 

Well if I was around then and I had this body. I would have no choice but to be union due to the fact that Confederates are somewhat racist. LOL "the Niggers turned into rappers?" that is rather offensive and could stir up stuff. And by niggers if you mean African-American or darker skinned people then I think it is best to make that word singular.

 

I'm a Southerner, although I'm not a redneck and do not own a Confederate flag. I don't drive a 4x4 (I drive a Beetle). I don't wear cowboy boots (Birkenstocks). I don't have a crew cuit (long-haired hippie, here). I am not a conservative Christian (liberal atheist). Nor am I a racist asshole either. (Member of ACLU and I believe in human rights). And I HATE country music!!! (Folk, Psychedelic, and Rock for me!)

BUT, I do like Southern cooking and Bluegrass.

dricas, the confederacy wasnt racists, if anything, the union was. Abraham Lincoln was an outspoken white supremicist who planned to export all the blacks so they wouldnt rise to power in the US or (oh god forbid!) marry a white person. The confederate president, Jefferson Davis, knew that slavery would soon die a natural death, so he instituted learning and laws on his plantations. His slaves had a jury of peers if suspected of a crime, and was very well educated. So that when slavery was dead, they would be ready to fit right in to the free world. Which sounds more racist to you?

People like you buy right into the Union myths of the evil racist southerner. Stop buying the propoganda, the US is known for smearing the enemy, CSA included.

There are a few things I like about the South but..... You LOST, get over it!!!

It seems that Southerners have this 140 year old inferiority complex because they lost.I think thats why Southerners still obsess over that damn war.

 

when your children are taught lies about their history, made to feel shame for being who they are, and an evil man is painted as a hero and a cultural god, you would be pissed too.

I'm a Southern refugee - I'm from the buckle of the Bible belt, rural South Carolina, but I escaped and got Californicated, then sought refuge in the far reaches of Montana, no one will fuck with me here in the Great American Void.

Montana's lifestyle is more close to Southern than anything else, except they have the progressive mindedness and openess of the West, that's why I love it here so much. It's like the South without all the bullshit. Montana was heavily settled by displaced Southerners in the post Civil war days.

Montana is similar to South Carolina in with belligerent independence, Montana is the freest state in the nation, they don't like anyone telling them what to do or how to do it yet we're progressive enough to be one of the front runners in alternative energy production with all of the ethanol plants springing up and wind energy and solar innovations. The only reason there are speed limit here is because the Fed Highway Commission threatened to cut funding and Montana has a lot of Long roads, so they reluctantly enforce the speed limits and the new open container laws that the sheriff doesn't even like.

 

When I lived in Florida,the men I worked around called me a yankee,cuz I came from California.Never bothered to tell them my people fought for the Rebs and some came from Missouri for the gold rush and 'owned 'people.I can't identify with that much,tho.Still have the trunks that came on the covered wagons.

 

Yeah. WERE ALL FROM FUCKING AMERICA!! Whats with this confederate shit, other states doesnt go YEAH UnION FLAG!!! Seems rather stupid to me.And I still can't deny that the states who like to show off their confederate flag are also the ones that are still the most racist in most areas against blacks , gays and other minorities to the point where they still get beat up/ murdered even.

What is "America"? If you are refering to the United States.....then no...we aren't.....just like the Welsh...though politically part of the UK aren't exactly "we are all from England"

The CSA was an independent country and was attacked and over taken by the USA.....and the south isnt racists as you say...the north is far more prejudiced and hateful towards blacks that in the south....its propoganda....i grew up playing with and going to school with black children....nobody hated anybody....so you might wanna rethink your prejudice against the southern states..

And the last time i heard of a gay being beat up and killed was out west....never heard of it here...ever....and no blacks have been linched and killed in my entire lifetime here....and i have lived here my entire 28 years.

and as to "union flags", what the fuck do you think that thing flying on everyones porch is?

 

A gay couple that moved to my hometown in South Carolina were treated horribly.
They bought this old Victorian style home, veranda, 200 year old Water Oaks in the front yard, white fence...as soon as the town of 1,500 figured out they were gay they got it every night, bricks through the windows, burning crosses in the front yard, bags of flaming shit on their beautiful veranda, and the cops wouldn't answer their calls. No one in town would sale them things, no one in the stores would wait on them, they were asked to leave everywhere they went, there were several arson attempts on their lovely historical Southern home. They lasted about 6 months before they got the hell out of dodge, then the First Baptist Church across the street bought the house, leveled it and turned it into a parking lot where my parents park every Sunday.

That was in the mid 1990s, and nothing has ever changed in my backwards Southern hometown. They're still pissed about Sherman's march through, my town and surrounding area was terrorized - that soil there, the earth there is haunted with the past. The physical war is over, but the social war wages on. I wanted no part of what I experienced growing up in the epicenter site of the rebellion.

Some of the more urban areas of the South are more progressive, Asheville, NC or Atlanta, GA - but there are still some very real hatred hot spots among the red clay and Georgia Pine covered sandhills.

 

Yeah...but that can be Anywhere, USA man...i live in deep south mississippi....the state that has the worst reputation of all the southern states....there are gay man and women in my town....There were 8 men in my offices at my last job...3 were straight...and it had no affect on their careers or personal lives....you can't judge the south on something like that...just like you can judge one man by another....

No blacks get lynched...no gays get lyncehed....a black man shot and killed two white cops recently...you know what happened to him? He was arrested, tried, and prosecuted......just like anyone else.....

 

small town rural South Carolina is like that - we had race roits in my high school, towns high schools all around us in the mid-lands had to be closed to cool the raging violence and race related beatings, fireworks going off in the halls, teachers getting beat up, kids escaping from windows - All "X" items were banned, no Malcome X and no "You wear your X I'll Wear Mine" no more confederate flag shirts because that's what started it all in my school. It began over the Malcome X shirt replies the rednecks wore when they all came to school together in a pickup truck caravan that day it all started up - that was 1995ish - never made national news or anything, never even made our local newspaper - I guess it just depends on where you are in the South, this was my experience from the 21 years I lived there. Other areas and towns in SC weren't as bad, Charleston is always wonderful. It's the backwoods little towns like mine tucked away from main travel ways that make of the base of the hatred in South Carolina. I guess it all depends on where you are in the South, I've lived and traveled a great deal through small towns of the West, and there are hot spots out here where hate groups build those bunkers in Northern California, Idaho, but it's not the same thing as what I saw from my hometown. Seems like the similar element found in the West is more mindful and purposeful, their organized, intentional and isolated groups that make strikes as opposed to where I came from entire population base didn't even know why they felt or acted, they were all loose cannons, they just did because it was passed down to them.

 

i find this debate very amusing. a bunch of folks fighting over who was right in a land that was stolen in the first place. what happened to honor among thieves? my people were here first, most of us welcomed everyone, too bad our hospitality was abused. native americans were the first slaves here. do you see us bitching about what was done to us? not that anyone is listening. there are many other issues that concern all americans that need addressing, besides fighting over the past. can't do shit about it anyway. my tribe is actually considered extinct, because we were all forcibly moved into the ghettos with the free blacks and relabeled "colored". as far as racism and prejudice in this country goes, i've had more problems outside the south, than in the south. i've found being of the darker skinned variety of american and having a flat cajun accent, that's all too often mistaken for ebonics, will get you mistreated as a human being in a heart beat north of the mason dixon line and all points west of the mississippi. it's far from just a southern thing.

what's most amusing is all the crap, ignorance, racism, prejudice, hate, intolerance, and stupidity i've read, not only in this thread, but as of late, this whole site. talk about unhip, far from the hippie mentality we preach and we're wanting to save the world? i think we need to save ourselves first. It is the English goverment of the north that stole the land....the southern government never forced anyone out of their homes or land...blame that on
the good ole US......The Scots were welcomed by the natives in the south....and
they had mutual honor for each other....especially in taste of fashion and decoration lol.....

I blame the north, that is the US, for it all....from importing the slaves they blamed us for, to the diaspora of the tribes, to keeping the southern economy down through dishonest means.....
