You would do well to be a bit less precious, and receptive to better information, from those who know what they are talking about. This is an open forum, and members are free to post anywhere as long they stay more or less within the guidelines.

And water from a shallow well in London is 400ppm. The south east of England sits on limestone and chalk, both of which are soluble.
I think that you are mixing up some of your anion figures (total salts), with hardness (precipitating salts)
Softened water maintains its anion content. Calcium ions are simply replaced with Sodium. The technical term for water softening is 'ion exchange'.
As a matter of interest, demineralised water has both the anions and cations precipitated out in 2 stages. For high purity, (such as battery electrolyte) the water is finished off in a mixed resin bed exchange process.

    i am impressed wilsjane!!
you know a lot about that topic too.
thats why i like chatting with you.

well water has lots of PPM, exactly! i have measured it myself

you know what the problem is with PPM measured with TDS?
the meter shows you the parts per per million of the total dissolved solids. These dissolved solids conduct electricity and therefore can be measured by that TDS Meter. BUT it does not indicate whether the ppm are good ones or bad ones. all we know is that they are ppm. put a little bit of salt to your water and your 0ppm distilled water will skyrocket up to 1000ppm. On the other hand flouride, chlorine, hormones can not be measured by PPM!

Clearly you take a lot of interest in factors affecting all our lives, but it is easy to jump to some wrong conclusions. Today we live 30 years longer than we did 100 years ago, so all those wicked governments must be doing something right. LOL
Every time I look at Google I cringe at the rubbish that I read, particularly when I read people posting on medical matters. One poster on the internet was advising on drug dependency. Clearly his advice was 100% for people addicted to heroine, but he drifted off onto prescribed drugs. Again, I admit that some doctors over prescribe, mainly to hypochondriacs. But I read one post that advised a patient to ween himself off the cocktail of drugs that his consultant had told him that he needed to take for the rest of his life. Little did he realize that these were anticoagulants following a TAVI heart procedure. When an aortic TAVI valve is fitted (rather than pulmonary or mitral), it is only a few centimeters from the aortic capillaries that supply blood back to the heart muscles. Without the drugs, rejection tissue would block these capillaries and the patient would die within a matter of weeks. The internet can be a very dangerous place.!!!!

Back to water. I designed several electrode heating systems for heating theaters and film studios, the largest being LWT south-bank center. These systems contained up to 10,000 gallons of water which was heated by using the water as the resistor in the boilers. Shields were driven over the electrodes in order to vary their surface area to compensate the negative temperature coefficient of the water as it heated, As you can imagine, boilers passing hundreds of kilowatts were quite complex and took me 7 years to design and perfect. To prevent insulating deposits, all the water needed to be demineralised and its electrical conductivity restored. For this I used sodium sulphite. Each of the demineralising plants cost between £20,000 and £50,000 to construct.
The technology was not entirely new, but had only been used in the past for munitions manufacture during the second world war. I won't say too much on that subject, or our now very friendly government may make an exception and send me for a swim in the river. LMAO

You seem to have quite a unique knack of winding people up here and unlike me, not all of them see the funny side of your Spanish temperament. Perhaps time to send a few PMs yourself and calling a truce with a few people who you seem to feel are on your back. Honestly, they are nice people when you get to know them.

In the meantime, how about adding a quote to the bottom of your messages "Light the blue touch paper and run for your life". :rage::rage::rage::rage:.

Waoo so you designed giant water boilers for 10000 gallon! tanks. I think thats awesome. I cant imagine how they look like. Must be huge pieces of stainless steel. Do you still have photos?

Since you had to demineralise the water first surely you know that demineralised/distilled water leaves no lime behind. That is the reason my tea/coffee maker never gets calcified. No need to clean it ever. Same applies to your washing machine if you use demineralised/filtered/distilled water you wont have problems with calcified tubes we so commonly have to deal with these days.

    @wilsjane

Please dont view me as a freaky nerdy water obsessed psychopath. I have never had to worry about water my whole life and have drunk straight from the pipe all my life. But, as I mentioned before, since I have moved to Spain I HAD to come up with an idea. The water here is gross. You would not like it either. Native people here dont drink it either. They all use reverse osmosis filters. But I have had my concerns with R.O. as I said before. I think you would do the same I did, Wilsjane, wouldn't you?
