    @wilsjane
i have used reverse osmosis filtre for the 1st year but there is some problems with it:

    - you have 4 cartridges. 1 of them is the membrane as you said. water drips very slowly through them. The cartridges can not be cleaned and remain closed and dark. a perfect breading place for mircrobes. after some time bacteria will populate the cartridges. There will be a build up of slime. Thats what happened to me. You will see funny looking particles inside your glass of water. Thats what happened to me also. The suggested recomendation to change the cartridges every year is surely not enough.

    - the tank where the filtered water is stored can not be cleaned either. It remains shut and dark. Again a wonderful breeding place for microbes.

-it wastes a lot of water. 1/2 of the water input goes down the drainage. only 1/2 of it will be of use.

    - it needs constant pressure to go through all the tubes.

    - the tubes are made of plastic. meaning plastic particles in your water

    - the water tank is made of plastic. again a problem

Have the other countries gone back to Chlorine.?

The Wells that I referred to are not in private houses, but fed some of the largest buildings in the city, saving the owners thousands of pounds in water costs. Most of their problems were with over use, drawing water too quickly from underground. Add this to the acid rainfall and all the leaking Victorian sewers and you will see the problems. The river Tyburn is also ducted under London and for more than 100 years was the favorite place for criminal gangs to dump the bodies or their victims.
Do you still fancy a glass of London well water.? LOL

I think that you have answered some of the reasons for low level fluoridation.
    Consider the facts.
The average London tower blocks water storage tanks contain 10'000 gallons.
The hundreds of miles of underground pipes are often more than 100 years old.
The new main water pipe that feeds water around the city had transit vans driving through it during its construction.

Keeping all that free from algae and bacterial slime is a bit more complex than washing your osmotic filter. LOL

"Have the other countries gone back to Chlorine.?"
the other countries are using chlorine.
But the countries that flouridate their water also put chlorine in their water, my friend.
Spain,UK and US flouridate their water but also chlorinate it.
Flour is not used to clean the water, there is no correlation, so I dont understand the reason behind your question.

"Do you still fancy a glass of London well water.?"
Still, well water is 100 times better than tap water which is being recycled over and over again. What your neighbour pisses out in his toilett might come out of your faucet next week. That is how the endless cycle of tap water works. And water memorizes all things as we know.
And I am at a loss to understand why the UK governemnt is interfering in well water. They should back the fork up!

lol that national-pride really fascinates me , my friend.
I hear german people saying "our water is one of the best"
I hear spanish people saying "our water is one of the best"
I hear austrian people saying "our water is one of the best"

Of course your government will have a vested interest in depicting a wonderful image of your municipial tap water. But reading your sentence only once reveals 1 contradiction. Here is your sentence again:
"water in the UK is considered among the safest in the world. You also generalize about things that vary a great deal. London is on a bed of chalk and clay, resulting in a total anion content of 285ppm in its water supply,"

    for comparison:
    rain water 30ppm
    spring(natural) water 30-50ppm
    osmosis filtered water 5-10 ppm
    distilled water 0-5 ppm

You're correct. I like the way water tastes here. Straight from sink into bottle.

I collect big drums of snow melt and run off frozen ponds then use a filter to drink. It is hard work to do.

I don't know where you get your facts from. As I mentioned, shallow wells around London are considered unsafe due to the very contamination that you mention. Although our treated sewage water would be safe to drink, it is not allowed anywhere in the UK. The London sewage water is pumped into the Thames estuary and runs out to sea. Our water supply comes entirely from reservoirs in high water table areas and deep artesian wells.
London alone consumes more than 300 million gallons of water a DAY supplied to residential properties. The total for the entire UK exceeds 2 BILLION gallons per DAY. Would you like to get all of that out of a well with a bucket. LOL
Regarding Florine. Where used, it replaces part of the Chlorine. It is not additional. I do not have the ratio figures to hand. The Chlorine is designed to evaporate out of the water at it's final point of consumption. The traces or Florine remain more dissolved and are set at levels designed for maximum medical benefit. This is well below the levels that would affect food digestion. Its main benefit is in the prevention of tooth decay and degenerative bone conditions, both of which are high in the UK.
