They sound like a shitty punk band to me, not like a shitty metal band.

It really depends on what your outlook of metal is I guess...
In my opinion, they have their own little place in the metal 'genre'.
In the fact that they had a big influence. Plus, seriously, Ritchie Blackmore... Fuck yes.
I definitely think of deep purple as metal.
Honestly, I never got into Iron Butterfly, so my opinion on the band is neutral.

I wouldn't say Iron Butterfly is metal proper but it's certainly not that far removed from it. In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida has some pretty juicy riffs. Metal evolved out of psychedelic rock (Black Sabbath's first album is at least 50% jam sesh).

There's obviously a very vague line between some hard rock/heavy blues rock and early heavy metal. Rainbow is often considered heavy metal but Deep Purple generally not. Some songs actually have all the elements of heavy metal, but Iron Butterly generally sounds like heavy (psychedelic) blues rock, same with Blue Cheer for example which is also often described as proto-heavy metal. Who cares what it exactly is, it's from a period when the foundations of heavy metal were created so obviously some bands just don't fit in the genre it became later.

But traditional heavy metal is, together with black metal, also the only metal that I always kept digging since the 90's

I believe the term proto metal is more apropriate for bands like deep purple, blue cheer, iron butterfly etc.

Haha ok. You should of just called my opinion stupid, instead of saying that song doesn't have ANY elements of a punk band. Because I think that is pretty stupid. Were you just saying it as a way of saying that you thought what I said was stupid? (I know, lolwut?)

Punk doesn't do any of that?

    lolwut is right.
You'll see that in that list, there is no mention of: "simple rhythms", "simple chords", or "high tempo" == not punk.

Haha I see you won't back down easily, but you are stretching it I think. So a "simple rhythm" can never be a "strong rhythm"?

But a strong rhythm doesn't have to be simple.

Both genres have strong loud music; but punk has an emphasis on simple chords and rhythms and speed; whereas, in metal, the emphasis is more on solos and composition.

Meh, now we are defining genres and nobody wins. Overall, I think they aren't metal or punk, but they remind me of punk more than metal honestly. I need heavy loud not distorted loud for me to think of it as metal. Keep in mind I listened to it at real low volume because I'm at work.

I would say metal is better because of it's scope; definitely.

But punk is more uplifting for me when the man got me down.

Well since you took it seriously, and now that I think about, I guess it was a true statement.

Minor Threat is the only punk band I really listen to anymore, and I think some people say they are just hardcore. I don't care, they rule either way. In 7th grade that shit changed my life haha.
