Although I think priests should be allowed to marry, and that it WILL probably happen with the next pope, no one is FORCING priests to be priests--they choose to. They know they have to be celibate before they even go into the seminary. Don't want to be celibate? Don't be a priest. My freewill is not week becasue I am religious, and I challenge you on that. It is my choice to be Catholic, I am in college, no one is forcing me, I love what I beleive. Prove it.
Exactly. I mean, look at the crap we have had to put up with lately from the religious right. Bill O'Riley thinks we are trying to steal christmas, Spongebob Squarepants is somehow involved in gay agenda conspiricies, and FCC complaints have rose from a mere 350 a year to over 240,000 with 99% of those complaints belonging to ONE christian activist group (for things like a character in Buffy the Vampire Slayer mocking the christian faith by dressing like a preist and killing another character in the show). I could name plenty other things. Rediculous stuff like this is bound to cause some animosity.
There will always be Christian Bashers. There will always be non-Christian Bashers. Opposites attract. The one will say: "Prove it". The other will offer real proof. The one will say: "Prove your proof". Some bashing may be dismissed for the sake of youth (go back through and check the ages). Most of you are struggling with the big, new issues in your lives, such as finding your individuality, autonomy, and most importantly - how to be cool. As a type the issue of opposition can be traced back to the beginning. We already know about up & down; right & wrong; good & evil. It's all as clear as night & day. But as a type - opposition declares something fundamental in the pattern of existence. It can be seen in Jesus & Satan as well as Cane & Abel. Read the question that is asked in the book of Genesis: why the one bashed the other. Opposition is supposed to exist. What did Christ, Himself, say? "I am come to send fire on the earth; and what will I, if it be already kindled?"
yep, opposition is supposed to exist for sure! without evil there's no good, without good there's no evil. Without both forces there would be no sense in our existence. That's why God gave us free will, so that we could choose goodness over evil BECAUSE WE REALLY WANT TO, not because we are programmed that way.
I believe that religion is the transformation of a hypothesis for something not explained by science into a belief. I'm fine with people believing in some "god", but I think it's just stupid for Christianity to stand up against what's obviously been explained by science. Example: Evolution.
Actually I support Evolution, and the Catholic Church has not come out against it, and in fact has stated it may have indeed exsisted.
Yeah, I read about the pope accepting the possibility of the big bang. Evolution doesn't necessarily negate the possibility of a god existing. Evolution itself could be a product of a god. What is silly is to completely dismiss scientific findings. There is a lot more than a "coffin-full" (according to campbell) of scientific evidence for evolution. The human forms they have found supporting evolution could easily fill the back of a truck itself (and that isn't including other animal evidence of evolution). They've found multiple Lucy's, multiple Goliaths (I think the last count was like 19 or something like that). And multiple skeletons of small people they've dubbed "hobbits" too. Archeology is making some major advances, and with that some major finds. http://www.nationalgeographic.ca/features/ultimateSurvivor/ This is a pretty comprehensive site, with TONS of info on the human forms they have found. Plus there is plenty out there on other animal evolution as well.
Its funny seeing anyone agree with the Nazi skinhead who started the thread and then was banned. If you didn't know, not all "Christians" are good people.
I've certainly said in one or two posts that I don't believe in God, yet have offered my opinion on what God is on more than one occasion. I'm reminded of a saying in a book I read once when I first started studying Buddhism, regarding edicts of an Emperor of India more than 200 years before the birth of Christ. Emperor Asoka would write edicts on stones and place them in various places. One such stone, stone 12 of the Fourteen Rock Edicts, states ... 'One should not honour only one's own religion and condemn the religions of others, but one should honour others' religions for this or that reason. So doing, one helps one's own religions to grow and renders service to the religions of others too. In acting otherwise one digs the grave of one's own religion and also does harm to others religions. Whosoever honours his own religion and condemns other religions, does so indeed through devotion to his own religion, thinking "I will glorify my own religion". But on the contrary, in so doing he injures his own religion more gravely. So concord is good: Let all listen, and be willing to listen to the doctrines professed by others.' -- What the Buddha Taught, Walpola Rahula, Chapter 1, The Buddhist Attitude of Mind, page 4. So to answer your question ... What do Christian bashers gain by thier assaults on Christians? ... I don't know. Darrell
. Most often what is called "christian bashing" is actually people defending their own beliefs, against the self righteousness of "christianity". Christians are the ones insulting the rest of us with their narrow minded dogma, and attempting to force their beliefs on the rest of us. They have no respect for other religions. You don't see any of us hindu or Buddist bashing do you. That's because those that follow those beliefs tend to respect others beleifs.
We've got our reasons. Actually, we believe helping people that way, so that YOU won't go to hell. OTHER religions, which are even WORSE in pushing it on other people to the extant of KILLING THEM, are tolerated! Like Islam, for instance, why don't I see you complaining to THEM??????
well, I am a Christian, but i do agree that Christians need more grace and respect for the unbeliever. We are not perfect by any means and we all fall short of God's Glory. But i can understand the passion that some "pushy" Christians have, how excited they are about thier faith, i used to be like that and it made others uncomfortable. I have come to a place in my faith now where I can witness by example. I wish everyone in the world knew Christ, but i also know that if people are going to come to Him, it has to be in God's timing, not mine. We are all under construction. But as Christians we are called by God to go out into the world and spread the gospel. We believe that salvation through accepting Jesus's death and resurection for our sins is the truth and we want everyone to know about it! It is for everyone. So try and understand where Christians are coming from. We respect all people but cannot respect all people's beliefs, when it contradicts with what we believe to be the truth. And it's not just like we're all high on our horses saying that "our religion is better than yours is, nanananana..." we're saying "look at this awesome free gift! I don't want you to miss it! "
"Although in every religion there is an emphasis on compassion and love, from the viewpoint of philosophy, of course there are differences, and that is all right. Philosophical teachings are not the end, not the aim, not what you serve. The aim is to help and benefit others, and philosophical teachings to support those ideas are valuable. If we go into the differences in philosophy and argue with and criticize each other, it is useless. There will be endless argument; the result will mainly be that we irritate each other- accomplishing nothing. Better to look at the purpose of the philosophies and to see what is shared- an emphasis on love, compassion, and respect for a higher force."— from Kindness, Clarity, and Insight, by the Dalai Lama.
So you say you are helping others by being harmful and disrespectful of the beliefs of others? I see this as self-centered arrogance. On your part, not the part of your religion. Whenever one says "OTHER religions", this also include your own ... whether Muslim, Buddhist, Christian, Judaism, Jainism, etc. Darrell HTML: HTML:
It's not arrogance. The Bible tells us so. And we're worried about people going to hell, even if they were very moral, they would still go there if they don't believe in Jesus, the free sacrifice: " For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life." John 3:16 NKJV " For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved." John 3:17 NKJV "He who believes in Him is not condemned; but he who does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God." John 3:18 NKJV That's the reason. Jesus created us. He gave us life as well as a free will. You have a choice to believe that He died for your sins or not.( John 1:1-3) How is it arrogant for me to tell others of His free gift of salvation? Jesus said: " I am the Way the Truth and the life. No one comes to the Father apart from Me" John 14:6 If you do not like this fact get mad at Him, not me. I did not write The Book, He did through people He was in covenant with. Funny, Jesus fulfilled 320 prophecies of the old testament. How could one Man do all that by happen stance. You who call me arrogant, God loves you dear one and desires a deep fulfilling relationship with you.God did not create religion, man did. Religion is man's vain attempt to reach God through his own works. Christianity is God comming down to man and making him righteous through His sacrifice. God bless you.
you are one fiery 15 year old! Let your light shine, girl! We need more teenagers like you in the world. Be careful, though, to have patience and understanding. Peace sister~
Arrogant, adj., Marked by or arising from a feeling or assumption of one's superiority toward others. You don't feel that you're not being arrogant in proclaiming that your religion is the one true religion over others religions? I find that arrogant through and through. I wasn't getting upset ... however, it appears you are. I'm still not upset. But then, you did say mad, correct ??? mad, adj. Suffering from a disorder of the mind; insane. Temporarily or apparently deranged by violent sensations, emotions, or ideas. Lacking restraint or reason; foolish. Marked by extreme excitement, confusion, or agitation; frantic. (here's my favorite) Affected by rabies; rabid. No, definately not mad ... First thing I heard a christian say that was truth. You are free to believe, and I encourage you to believe so. I on the other hand do not believe this and will not subscribe to such thought. And if there ever was such a being as god then to you I leave with this ... God bless you too. Though I also do not believe in the existence of God or god, and again nor will I subscribe to such thoughts, that does not mean you are not free to believe in one. Darrell HTML: HTML:
i find more spiritual wisdom coming from the 15 year old girl than the 49 year old man. There are things to learn from teenagers!!! At least she has a good arguement for her beliefs. i am still waiting for some food for thought from DarrelKitchen. using the dictionary to give the proper definations is just immature. (You know what she means)
It never ends does it? The animosity, hatred and bashing ... Only this time, its not a christian being bashed ... huh ??? Darrell
