i don't know if you would consider it a "cult" movie, but how about a Clockwork Orange?, or any of the films takeshi mehki has made like ichi the killer and audition, shaun of the dead is a good one too, and natural born killers, you know there are just too many movies to list that kick ass. why does it seem that all the good movies are ones a lot of people never heard of?

I agree with most of the movies mentioned though i don't think anyone mentioned 12 monkeys, american beauty or Eternal sunshine of a spotless mind...

and i think...The Pick of Destiny will be/is a new cult movie :)

Not necessarily. A cult film is one that is extremely popular with a small group of people, has gained some kind of "underground" success/notoriety, generally flies under the mainstream radar, that kind of thing. It can be campy or completely serious. And you can't deliberately make a cult film; a film gains cult status gradually over time.

    My nominees:

    1. Eraserhead
    2. Harold and Maude
    3. Grey Gardens
    4. Beyond the Valley of the Dolls
    5. Phantom of the Paradise

IMHO, Eraserhead is the absolute gold standard of cult films.

Calling Pulp Fiction a cult film is one step short of calling Titanic a cult film. It's one of the most popular films in history and was nominated for best picture at the oscars.

well, since i was four years old when pulp fiction was released, i had no idea it won an oscar. i've met only three people who've mentioned seeing the film, but most of the locals are hicks anway...i didn't get to see it until a couple years ago, but i'd heard it was popular with different groups of people

    umm.

    5. boondock saints - great, original storyline. ron jeremy is key. haha.[/u]
4.fight club - probably the only movie with brad pitt i like, besides his small role in true romance and my number one. again, the story line is amazing.
    3. grindhouse - two brilliant filmmakers bring back exploitation movies that make you feel like you're in the '70s. it was the most fun i ever had in a theater.
    2. dogma - kevin smith is brilliant. end-o story.
    1. snatch - so many good actors, another original storyline.

1.) Lost Highway (1997) - More David Lynch mischief, mayhem, and confusion, this time influenced by the OJ Simpson case. A really crazy thriller.

2.) Jacob's Ladder (1990) - I don't know if this really qualifies as 'cult,' but oh well. There are some pretty terrifying scenes in this thing. A bizarre portrait of death.

3.) Heathers (1989) - The best teen movie, hands down. It's really very. How many other films laugh at teenage suicide?

4.) Wet Hot American Summer (2001) - Awesomely funny movie from the people who brought you "The State" and "Stella."

5.) Eraserhead (1977) - David Lynch's first feature... and probably the strangest film I've ever seen. While it's not my favorite Lynch film or my favorite cult film, in all honesty, it probably is the king of cult films. It is the definition.

This is so hard! The Big Lebowski is hysterical! Heathers was my favorite movie for a Long time, my friend's and I played a lot of Croquet because of it( I was red!) The Rocky Horror Picture Show for sure! Monty Python and the Holy Grail, and Empire Records and Dazed and Confused......can we do a top ten...?

    Hmm, probably
    1. Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas
    2. Trainspotting
    3. Requiem for a Dream (both 2 and 3 are about a drug I love.. one is the positive(ish) aspects and one is the begative aspects. They go well together).
    4. House of Flying Daggers.. grand, sweeping plot, fucking awesome martial arts effects, a great example of the "Wu Shu" cinema I love so much. Also see Hero and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.
    5. Salò, or the 120 Days of Sodom. A lot of people will think "you fucking sicko" especially if they've seen the movie but not appreciated it. It's a biting commentary on man's cruelty to man, the dehumanising and betrayal which everyone (according to the movie) is capable of. It's "shock cinema" along the lines of Un Chien Andalou, for those that know what that is ;)
Oh and number 6 would be Brazil. The PROPER version, not the utterly butchered and mutilated American cinema release. The studio didn't like terry Gilliam's vison so they saccharinated it and made it a "happy ending". When in actual fact the ending is anything but.
