Gotta add Soylent Green...They Live...Ummm..I'm sure I'll think of more. There are so many. Yea...A vote for CHUD, right on.
without making a top 5 list, here are some films I'll remember for ever........Citizen Kane, Apocalypse Now, Les Uns et Les Autres (no, I'm not french), The Devils (directed by Ken Russell), Psycho, The Raging Bull, Easy Rider, Blow Up, Rumble Fish............................................
Easy Rider (1969) The Evil Dead (1982) Fritz the Cat (1972) Blue Velvet (1986) Blood for Dracula - Andy Warhol Presents (1974)
A Clockwork orange Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas Brother From Another Planet Slc Punk not in any order
All the movies I've seen listed here are fine, but I'm going to point to a few from the daze that are true cult hippy films, in no particular order. You will have extreme trouble finding these anywhere. I have never seen any but the first in any video store. They can be found on the web. We watched the movies back when they came out and they were not seen by the mainstream public. Most people have never heard of them. Barbarella, 1968 With Jane Fonda doing a strip tease! You have to watch this show! This will appear here and there every now and then. It was done in French and English. Jane is a sex kitten out to save the universe. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barbarella_%28film%29 Zachariah, , the First Electric Western, 1970 Written by The Firesign Theater http://home.earthlink.net/~ritter/firesign/firesign.html with Don Johnson of Miama Vice, The James Gang, Country Joe and the Fish, etc. He was "A Head of His Time!" http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/6305262624/102-7952118-2235366?v=glance&n=404272Rock and roll western, the gunslingers carry electric guiters! Written by The Firesign Theater, these guys were around doing live radio before Cheech and Chong. Anybody remember Nick Danger? Saw this at a drive in. I have the album somewhere. It maybe the first time "hippie" rock and roll was put into a movie. I believe it predated Easy Rider. Vanishing Point, 1971 with Barry Newman as the last American hero, the electric centaur, the demi-god, the super driver of the golden west, driving his 440 Challenger cross country in the first non stop car chase movie. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0067927/ Billy Jack Tom Laughlin The song "One Tin Soldier" comes form this flick. "Go ahead and hate your neighbor, go ahead and cheat a friend. Do it in the name of Heaven, you can justify it in the end. There won't be any trumpets blowing come the judgment day, On the bloody morning after...One tin soldier rides away." -- "One Tin Soldier" by Coven http://www.geocities.com/Hollywood/Bungalow/2201/Rvw_BillyJack.html Billy Jack was cool. Joe, 1970 Peter Boyle is Joe, Susan Saradon is his daughter, I think Boyle is the father on Everyone Loves Ramon. Joe, a working class stiff, comes into conflict with the hippies of the day. This was a scarry movie in the day. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0065916/
A boy and his dog, Animal House, Dawn of the Dead, The Clockwork orange, The good the bad and the ugly.
Tough question. I love cult films, and it's impossible for me to narrow it down to just 5... So I'm bending the rules a bit and mentioning ten, in no particular order: Highlander - Such an awesome concept and story. I think in the right hands, a remake of the original would be fantastic. Clerks - THE Kevin Smith movie. Totally low budget, underground type of flick with great, wickedly funny dialogue. Lock, Stock and 2 Smoking Barrels - Brilliant multiple narratives and really cool characters, coupled with a great ending. Natural Born Killers - Excellent, highly creative cinematography and use of effects. Requiem For A Dream - So incredibly bleak and depressing, this is one powerful film. Blue Velvet - David Lynch's bizarre film noir-type masterpiece. Weird, freaky characters (Frank is on of the coolest bad guys in any movie) and disturbing imagery make this a great cult film. Fight Club - Great film all around. The Big Lebowski - Great characters, wickedly funny dialogue. Trainspotting - Another great British film, with excellent characters, cool dialogue and great script based on Irvine Welsh's novel. Excalibur - Brilliant adaptation of Malory's Morte D' Arthur, the famous 15th century romance about the tale of King Arthur. Director John Boorman does an incredible job of creating the feel of a mythical, magical time and place of knights, kings and magic.
hmm. i heart huckabees, fight club, donnie darko, the rocky horror picture show, fear and loathing in las vegas what the bleep do we know?, labyrinth, ghost world that's more than five and not in any certain order but there ye go.
cry baby (the Johnny Depp John Waters MUSICAL! WHAT could be better?) hedwig and the angry inch RETURN TO OZ (a talking chicken and claymation rocks!) rocky horror ERASERHEAD (I'm glad my cheeks aren't that lumpy...) clockwork orange blue velvet labyrinth (David Bowie, best mullet in history, best bulge in history) daisies (does this count?) and... Donnie Darko can go poop on itself.
www.LivefreakyDiefreaky.com theres a film about Charles Manson. You should look into that. [over the enternet, no stores will sell it.]
oh my god, soooo hard to pick just five. 1.Requiem for a Dream (see my comment in that thread) 2.The Kevin Smith Jersey trilogy, aka Mallrats, Clerks, and Chasing Amy (i cheated a bit here, hehe, but i love his brillant sort of...idk, out there comedy, and the way he writes/directs/acts in all three) 3.Donnie Darko (Definitely a movie i can relate to on soooo many levels.) 4.Fight Club (ahhhhh!!! what's not to love here?!) 5.Pi (i'm not sure why i like this one so much...i'm still not sure if i understand it completely, but it's beautifully made) Close runners-up here = Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, Trainspotting (aka the movie that made Tara want to be a junkie, later counteracted by Requiem for a Dream, hehe), Velvet Goldmine, and Party Monster. Not sure if Party Monster is really "cult" or whatever, but i think it is.
Eating Raoul (cannibalism) Liquid Sky (aliens come to Earth looking for heroin) The Quiet Earth (last man on earth theme) Repo Man The Brother From Another Planet Hotwater
In no particular order: Bad Boy Bubby - A must see. If you haven't seen this, you are missing out. This is one of my all time favourites. Trainspotting - An articulate junkie who can communicate in a form other than song. That's got to be a bonus. He Died with a Felafel in his Hand - A great film. Anyone who has ever lived in shared accommodation should see this one. A Clockwork Orange - Brutality and Beethoven. What's not to like? Requiem for a Dream - Good. AND, not wishing to be limited by numbers: V for Vendetta Pricilla, Queen of the Desert Donny Darko Blow
An Adelaide film , glad this was mentioned. I doubt the yanks have heard of it though. That one was definitely on my list too and i can definitely relate to the shared accomodation thing, I never get sick of that movie. Too bad its probably only known in Australia. Anyway, I second fister, if you want original movies you shouldn't miss these.
1. RHPS 2. Fear And Loathing In Los Vegas 3. Tank Girl 4. The Blues Brothers 5. Fight Club I think those all count as cult movies. I'm not sure... but I do know that they're all great!
