I hate it when people label pink floyd as progressive rock. the closest they ever got to progressive was maybe their animals album......
Your comments offend me, and David Gilmour. They are progressive minimalists(if such a thing exists), as I've said before. I refuse to discard their genius into the simple genre of Classic Rock.
what about led zeppelin and cream??? don't tell me they are not progressive 'cause i won't believe you!!!
shit, LED ZEPPELIN AND CREAM are NOT progressive bands!!!! led zep receorded kashmir, the most progressive track in their carrer, but it isn't prog rock band!! my top 5 : marillion pink floyd (later) genesis king crimson camel
My favorites: Yes - The Yes Album, Fragile, Close To The Edge, Tales From Topographic Oceans, Relayer, Going For The One, and . . . Magnification. Gentle Giant - Octopus, In A Glass House, Free Hand, The Power and The Glory. Pink Floyd - Atom Heart Mother, Obscured By Clouds, Meddle, Dark Side Of The Moon, Wish You Were Here. King Crimson - In The Court Of The Crimson King, In The Wake Of Poseidon, Lark's Tongues In Aspic, Starless and Bible Black, Red, Discipline. Genesis - Selling England By The Pound, The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway. And many honorable mentions: Caravan - In The Land Of Grey And Pink. Hatfield And The North - Hatfield And The North, Rotter's Club. Traffic - John Barleycorn Must Die, Low Spark Of High-Heeled Boys, Shoot Out At The Fantasy Factory Anglagard - Hybris Porcupine Tree - In Absentia Dead Can Dance - Aion, Into The Labyrinth, Serpent's Egg, Within The Realm Of A Dying Sun.
lol, Magnification. 'tis a decent album... but funny how you've placed it at the end of your list following a "..." from all of their epics and brilliance. You don't understand the genre... they may be a bit trippy or weird and have a decent amount of innovation and originality to their music... but not at a level which distinguishes them from pure classic rock. Nor do they have the complexity which is usually required to be considered progressive. That said, Zepp has some semi-prog moments. Cream I'm not so sure, but I know little of their music.
Can't do 5. Can do 4.... -Yes-(Close to the Edge) -King Crimson-(Larks Tongues in Aspic) -The Mars Volta-(Amputechture/Frances the Mute) -Mahavishnu Orchestra-(The Inner Mounting Flame)
Pink Floyd weren't prog. They were just Pink Floyd. You cannot label them Prog is like Yes, King Crimson, Genesis, ELP, Camel etc.
I like Yes, Porcupine Tree, the Mars Voltra, Dream Theatre, and Camel. All were mentioned though, yet all rather good bands. "Lightbulb sun" is a very underrated yet amazing Porcupine Tree album, by the way.
There we go, although I prefer For Girl Who Grow Plump In The Night. As far as the poll goes, Yes. I wouldn't call Kashmir the most progressive thing Zeppelin ever did, seems like Achilles Last Stand is more like it to me.
I just got two albums by Gong, Angel's Egg and You. Freakin' brilliant. I have to agree with whoever it was who said Gong is like King Crimson on ten hits of acid. I can hardly wait to hear more.
UMPHREY'S MCGEE!!!!! -Though these guys are considered a jamband - theyre stuff is very progessive and amazing! - ZAPPA anyone??? - Jethro Tull is my favorite traditioanlly progressive band. They are indeed awesome. -Floyd! - Shine on You Crazy Diamond is such a great song. - PHISH - not a progresive band but some of their stuff can be on the progressive side .
Out of those four, I think Jethro Tull are by far the best. However, I wouldn't really class them as progressive rock. I mean they certainly had a period where they were very like progressive rock, but so much of their material falls into other categories, including most of their absolute best stuff in the 1970s that I have never felt the label really fit them very well. Of all bands ever to be labeled as progressive rock, Hawkwind are by far the best.
porcupine tree is sick, i dont no that many people that listen to them supertramp is the ultimate prog rock band ozric tentacles (i dont know if theyre prog or jam band)
