Words cannot express my love for that game lol. It's just one of those magical things where everything worked out perfectly and made me feel like a kid again and I have no clue why. The story was generic, the characters were generic, the battle system was boring, the random encounter rate was ridiculously high, the sound quality was pretty shitty, but the way everything came together just worked so well, and proved that the whole is always more than a summation of it's parts. I'm glad someone on this forum knows that game. Did you beat it? I remember when I first became the captain of my own ship and started exploring the skies and making discoveries I had a huge grin on my face. And when Vyse, after always being optimistic, gets stranded on that deserted island and for the first time loses hope and thinks he is gonna die alone I was genuinely sad. Such a classic game, I can't even praise it enough. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4_KizK-Z7uE"]YouTube- Skies Of Arcadia Music ~ Little Jack Nasrad Ixa
You are as wrong as you think I am. It's not rose tinted glasses, it's simply my opinion. I do not like any new games like I do the older ones, simple as that. And you shouldn't presume my attitude deprives me of anything, I still buy games often, I just don't enjoy them as much. And the new FF is not a game I will look back on in 10 years time with fond memories Ah well, no matter.
An opinion formulated with rose tinted glasses? It's one thing to say "I don't think there are any great games being released" and another to say "Great games are not being released". The former is an opinion, the latter is objectively incorrect.
omgsh YES!! when you get your own huge purple flying ship with the lazer, (whats it called?), I could not put the game down. it was amazing. and yes I beat it. all the characters were so interesting and cool for some reason, even all the little people you pick up to be on your crew. The best thing about the game is just how your world just gets bigger and bigger. like first you pull your weight on the Little Jack, then you're just good friends with that guy traveling everywhere, then you get your own ship and crew, then you get to fly above and below the top and bottom limits for a bunch more places and discoveries, then you get your own home island. its just awesome. oh and i love Ramirez for some reason, he just always stuck with me as an awesome character ever since i beat it. I daydream ocasionally of him with that silver gigas thing just destroying everything. lol idk thats probably just me lol I havent played it in forever, but when i did try playing it again a while ago, it took way too much damn time. it goes very slow. i can't imagine beating the whole thing again. The game just had that spark that you cant quite put your finger on like most of the games on this thread. Oh and I played it on the Gamecube revamped version, and by listening to that youtube song, which I definitely recognize, I don't remember it being that crappy. lol and i think that the gamecube has "director's cuts" parts included i guess.
It was that prototype you steal from Valua, the Delphinus. I remember one of the characters in the game once said that it's a good thing there was only one Delphinus, because if there was an entire fleet of them the very existence of the world would be put in danger haha. I loved that ship. The coolest part about it is how you could go inside of it and explore it, and talk to all of your crew members that you could recruit. You even got to choose your own flag and all of that. But yeah, I know exactly what you mean about the world, they did it extremely well. You start off just the son of a pirate on some island, and eventually discover all of these vast continents, each with their own unique crystal, Giygas, and culture, and even eventually discover that the world is round The sky was really kind of intimidating too. I remember wondering at the very beginning of the game what was below the clouds, and you eventually go down there. You remember when Drachma, the guy with the mechanical arm explains to you that his ship is named "Little Jack" after his son that was obsessed with birds, who fell over the side of the ship and was clutching his box of colored feathers as he plummeted to his death? Wonderful storytelling, it actually made me wonder what it would feel like to fall over the side of an airship and fall forever and ever through the clouds not knowing what was at the dark bottom. Obligatory Delphinus theme music - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HUvWyEHF58k"]YouTube- Skies Of Arcadia Music ~ Delphinus The entire game really just captures a sense of wonder and adventure, must have been what the world felt like in the ancient past. That's the version I played too. The Gamecube version had additional content, but the sound quality was dropped so that they could fit the game on one disc. Sucks.
i always wondered that too! and then eventually you actually go down to the bottom to get fina's ship and it's all gloomy and scary. marvelous ideas. i also like how theres things in the beginning that you come back to with a greater knowledge, like that first island you get that little moonstone at that ends up to be part of the silver moon city. or how the purple whale is significant in the story instead of just some monster that messes up Vyse and Aika, but that also messed up things for Drachma with his son or something, i forgot how that part went. good storytelling, even with all the admirals too. I wonder what it'd be like if they remade the game with better graphics, voice acting, maybe a bigger world.
I dunno, I'd say 90% of Arcadia's fans are constantly clamoring for a sequel. But have you ever noticed how sequels tend to NEVER be as good as the original? Personally I think they should just never make a sequel or a remake because I don't think they could ever match the greatness of the original. And to me, anything but the greatness of the original would be a disappointment.
I have to say for once I actually agree with you. Some of it may be due to independence but really its only been recently where I started the type of thought process as viewing videogames as legitimate media. I often find myself weighing my options between seeing a certain movie or waiting another paycheck and opting for a video game instead. I used to view them more like toys, there was some immeadiate gratification but I didn't feel as quite as immersed in the experience. I often evoke different emotions in today's games as where old games had more of a 'static' feeling. I think the best games stood out on old systems because they were vastly superior to the majority of the titles on the system. That gap has been closed a bit and I find satisfactory and engaging experiences in the majority of games I play these days.
yeah i completely agree. sequels never match up to the original. besides Majora's Mask but thats same gen as ocarina. but if a remake were to be made, which i do hope they do for games, Skies would on the list of the games i'd like to see. A sequel to the story is a definite no in my book, but i would like to see it revamped which they barely do for any games at all.

That's because the first one is always a new and fresh idea. New things are more impressive than a variation of something old. If the original had all the bells and whistles of a sequel you'd enjoy it much more. Also, it's hard to have a better story than the best one you could think of already. Games with are meant to have sequels are usually better.

Haha Shenmue was good. I don't think I ever beat it though, if I remember correctly I think I left off where I was driving some boxes around on a pier with a forklift. That was a great game and a long one.
