I really hope you or anyone else isn't thinking I created this post simply to impose an argument. I only created it to share my personal thoughts that I know many others share or have a close rendition of their own. As I said in my original post, I am pleading with people to actually know the history of dreads and respect that history perhaps by representing it with their own dreads. I'm not saying that you must, just recommending if you will. Who knows it might even be to your benefit if you think this way and have dreads, as you may then become more spiritual or richeous as a result and become more just/good in turn. However as we all know one should simultaneously not be overly self-richeous and assume that by having dreads they are somehow morally superior to others.

    AMEN!

Sorry for the double post, it's just that I know exactly what you mean by people mistaking others who are vocal about their beliefs/ideas as "elitist" or constant arguers...did it ever occur to those who think this way that giving opinions on subjects often is not a bad thing, as it encourages thought, something that is somewhat lacking in the States these days.

Wow I found it hard to even read through this whole thing, and im totally cool with other peoples beliefs and conceptions about this and that, but damn a tonne of arguing goes on here for a forum of hippies. Sh!t I got dreads because I think they look effing rad, and im way to lazy to try to tame my curly hair every day.

And on a side note I think you guys are trying to pick sides here, but its not just a piece of wood and it didnt just inspire millions, its both, yeah its just hair, and im sure braids have a history too; if that really means something to you cool, if not dont force it upon others (and im not saying you are, just making a general comment about this forum) Suck it up people seriously.

and if i get banned for this post, that just proves my point

No worries bthizle1, I'm glad you made this thread. It is okay to have discussion and debate, and this is a hot topic to discuss. Before I continue, please know that I am simply being vocal and voicing my opinion; like you said, this is not a bad thing.
This is very telling of you. Why are you so against dreadlocks that do not follow your specific guidelines? Your entire interest in dreaded hair stems from what you are so dead set against. You have 'seen the light' now, but a major reason you have dreadlocks today remains: You enjoy their appearance. You would never have them if not for your vanity in the beginning. That is why you got them in the first place. After the fact, you did some research and hoped onto the spiritual journey bandwagon. I don't blame you, it seems so glamorous and special and unique to a new onlooker. That is fine, so many others have done this as well, and really, its expected- but you don't have to expect others to follow suite.

Always feel the need to express your superiority with 'natural' locks eh? The reason you may interpret folks becoming defensive on this matter is because you are initially on the offense. You've tried to tell people why they should or shouldn't have dreads. Your way or the highway huh? Now we're all guilty of this at one time or another, but the responses shouldn't be a surprise.

How can you say that right after telling me to quite voicing my opinion?

In the end we are all dread brethren, why must you try so desperately to segregate us?

I look forward to adequate responses.

super smash, are you serious? you're gonna make me read thru all that? don't you have anything better to do than pick apart every word I say?

it is true that I like their appearance, yes. I obviously would not to anything to myself if I didn't think it looked good. I am not growing them BECAUSE of vanity...I am growing them to denounce vanity. I always hated my hair before I let it lock, I was always worried about wether it looked good or not. now, I simply do NOTHING to my hair and I never worry about it. make sense? and "hopped on the spiritual journey bandwagon"? please....I only do anything because I want to. I didn't know it was going to be a spiritual journey until I embarked on it.

how am I expressing my "superiority"? the reason I interpret folks getting defensive about it is because you felt the need to write this whole counter-argument to my response in the first place. i'm not trying to be offensive, I just posted a reply in response to the topic.

I'm not trying to change your opinion and I don't expect to. Honestly, there are better things to do than argue about HAIR with some random person on the internet. think about it.....IT'S JUST HAIR.

when i began to dread id already given up meat several years before already been on a spieitual awakening you might say, exploring my spiritual side
my 1st set i didnt gropw for spiritual reasons though..or for looks really either and they did quickly take on a spiritual connection for me..possibly even more so whemn i cut them and felt that profound loss ..i cut them because of pressure to pay more attention to material gain then spiritual..instantly regretting that..
the dreads i now have though were grown purely for the spiritual connection although my spiritual connection maybe less strickly defined as others

i beleive though that most people begin to have a spiritual awakening through the dreading process
some deny it, some fight it some are slower in theyre awakening and othgers end it prematurely
but i believe that most over time do wake up to the spiritual connectiions theyre dreads provode
its all a journey and tuning in to that side of ourselves may take years for some

i dont care what reasons ppl have for beginning the journey
i dont care if they backcomb or wax or go naturl
all i care about is the awakening
yes i think backcombing and wax and the whole wanting to look cool slows or seperates ya slightly from the spiritual side of dreading but over years if they stay on the journey they'll slowly wake up to the spiritual aspects of dreading
would i preffer more go natural? sure would, we are in a time of great need of a spiritual evoliution
we are in a time of need for change ..
we need more to reach the destination it doesnt matter how they travel or theyre reasonings for beginning as long as in the end enough make it to enlightenment to cause the revolution ..the evolution we need to save ourselves from ourselves

theres no point in arguing we're all in this together
    just all in different stages

    but with 1 goal

maybe when you see a dread in the movies or on american idol yopu should feel hope not dispair? maybe in 10 years there will be enough conceisness in the world to change the course we're on now

My post is 287 words, your's is 217. Stop grasping at straws. This thread is to encourage thought as stated by bthizle1, if you don't have the attention span or patience to read 287 words, then I suggest you leave the thread. Soaringeagle just wrote a post with 371 words, are you going to ridicule him as well?

If you're going to single me out, the least you can do is show some common courtesy and read my responses.

You keep your hair in a fashion that is favorable to you; that is vanity. You hated the way your hair looked before so you changed it. You are not without vanity.

You rip your dreads into sections because that is socially acceptable within the dreadlock community. You are not without vanity.

Your very interest in dreads stems from it. You can preach all you want from your high and mighty spiritual throne, but that fact remains and 'taints' your journey in regards to your restrictive standards. No matter what you do, you can never escape it.

to come back with the main subject, I guess it was the meaning of dreads or anything like that. I liked to read those couple words soaring eagle and I must say you inspired me at least just a bit to start the journey. People have changed since when they trusted in god or shiva or any other figure. Who's god anyway? What I see from the religion now is a great moral code and it needs an image to be put on, like those gods. But now I don't know a lot of people beliving in religion here in Canada, I don't really myself but I do trust in my own religion, or my own god and don't want 'High placed in the society people' tell me how to live, I grow dreads for freedom mainly. I guess if more people would believes in themselves there would be lot less violence or stupid things happening. Got a lot more to explain then that for saving ourselves of ourselves but anyway, and each time I see someone getting in the dreadlock journey either by backcombing or going natural or waxing as you said that person change the world a bit and yes it makes a difference, and if you wax and do bad to your hair a lot of time those start back natural or backcombed which dont mather but I love seeing my hair going from 'nothing' to dread, slowly, because changes are long to make in society too. It's not by bombing everyone that problems go away it just get worst, it needs time. It needs PEOPLE trusting in what they do to get those changes.

WOW. ok first of all...I am always going to have hair, no matter what. the only way that I could not pay attention to my hair is if I had some kind of operation done that would make my hair stop growing forever. get real.

second of all...you don't even know me or what my reasons are for growing dreadlocks. the only thing you have to judge me from is by the words I type on this forum. and let me make this clear: I have never yet had to rip any of my dreads. And if I eventually do, it's not because I feel the need to be "socially acceptable", it's because I want to still be able to feel water on my scalp without huge congos blocking it. you talk as if you somehow know everything about me, yet you know nothing.

i do not consider myself high and mighty in any way, I am a humble person. If you consider me that, than so be it. that is quite flattering and I will take it as a compliment.

you do what you do, and I will do what I do. I only advocate things that I believe in, I don't condone you for things you do, so please don't do it to me either. like I said, IT IS JUST HAIR. When you try to look past all these physical differences, we are really all the same.

lol im sorry, but you are just ridiculous
were all on a dread journey and were here to support each other, lets not be so goddamn negative. im not saying dont argue, arguing is great. but you really dont seem to be getting anything out of the discussion or giving anything to it... its all
when you dont even know the guy or anyone else on the board. if thats your opinion, maybe you could voice it as such instead of attacking people for having different ideas from you and not even listening when they try to explain their words.
i respect you and your decisions and your views on the dreadlock journey/hairstyle/philosophy/statement or whatever it means to you. and i think that most of the other regular posters would say something similar (liquid soul already did). doesnt that count for something with you and dont you think you could extend the same respect (or at least courtesy) to the other dreaded members here?
    so annngry here lol

    Doods....doods....doods...doods....

This isn't really a thread to act condescending towards another's views on dreads. I only started it, because I thought a history (very brief at that) of dreads could/would perhaps help to encourage a deeper respect for them. Because of this thought, some may even become more spiritual for whatever reasons they may have.

We all have the right to have our own views on any hairstyle, and should have the right to wear whatever hair style we wish as well. Whatever reason one wears a specific hairstyle is completely up to themselves, we can discuss our personal reasons and the factual history of dreads, but we should never hate on someone for their reason. I personally think that having dreads for spiritual reasons or any reason that is more than simply appeasing yourself by appeasing others is much better, HOWEVER those are my PERSONAL thoughts.

So, let's all just chill out, hit that spectacular peace pipe soaringeagle's brought to the sesh and perhaps begin discussing why we have and what we all personally get out of having dreads.

    One Love folks......

(Oh on a side note, I saw the Wailing Souls last night and was wondering how many of you like reggae (ragga as I like to call it) and more specifically them.)

I didn't even say anything to you in this thread at first, you initiated by telling me to stop voicing my opinion.

Bolded part is the biggest joke in this thread.

You've misinterpreted the point entirely. I have no problems with what you do to your hair. Natural locks and what they can stand for is a beautiful thing. I just called you out when you make assumptions and judge others when you are guilty of the very problems you condone them for. Unless you are willing to fully dedicate yourself to the extent of your claim (which you admit you don't) then please don't look down on others. You admit to your vanity, so why condone and label others? If you could learn to be more accepting things will go much smoother.

In regards to your accusation of me- I made no wild guesses, I was restating what you decided to share with us. If you post false information about yourself that is on you. Its ironic that you scold me for "making assumptions and not knowing you". A quick look at your post history shows how you've judged others on a greater level. Don't like it when the tables are turned, do you? To say if you have natural dreads you're automatically granted greater spiritual awareness, or that people with 'natural' locks are more attached to their hair. It is an ignorant thought.

I'm not angry with you, I'm simply pointing out the fallacy of your logic. I have no problems with what you do to your hair. Natural locks are great, yet it seems you're unable to accept the other side.

Hilarious coming from you. Again, look at your post history, and follow what you preach. It is just hair. Why do you insist on segregating us?

Have you not read previous posts made by either of us? I'm somewhat appalled that you would view him as some sort of innocent victim and me an evil attacker. He has told people why they should or shouldn't have dreads. In my opinion he represents the old traditional, conservative way of thinking- which I don't have an initial problem with- but he could stand to be more accepting of people who don't share his particular views.

when spirituality is woven and locked into the very intention as well as methid of aquiring dreads you gotta understand its a more profound experience ftom the begining
when its woven into your life not just your hair..in diet..in actions in thoughts and intentions and experiences its from ther start a deeper experience then someone who backcombes wanting to look cool and slowly discovers the deeper connections
its not to say we dont all get to a simular level someday just that from the early days theexperience is different and yes your experience will be different so you may not see eye to eye all the time comming frim a different experience
but surely you can see how especialy in the early years how taking a more pure spritual approach to letting your dreads develop as spirit would have em..as naturaly as possible would affect your perception of ther experience as a whole especialy in the early years
i dont think hes being arogant vain or condescending in the least bit only given ya realirty that taking spiritualality and purity into concideration from the first spark of intention creates a more profoundly deep and reverant experience from the very begining
thats not putting down others who took different routes, theyre experiences may differ but were all on the same journey together
theres no tometables, no rolers to measure eachotherss progress by and no need to

we dont just need 1 love
    we need more love

    c'mon..lets feel it

    lil more respect as well
