Tipping is not allowed in Japan. Even when I insisted on giving, they refused it. It was the craziest thing I ever saw.
OK good. That's basically what I do. We ordered out last night and did a big tip. We made sure to order local.
I had this same question on another forum (not HF). What happened was when I went for pickup at a local restaurant and paid with a card, there was a tip option added to the bill. 15,18, or 20%, and when I inquired about it, it was mass mutiny from the other members about why I should tip and stop being stingy. Fuckers!
I don't care to be tipping for fast food either. Sonic workers seem to expect it. I'd be just as happy to use the drive-through and park.
The best tip I left was on a job in Indonesia. I had already loaded up on the few bits of tourist crap (including Luwak coffee for my mother in law) and was down to the last of my Euros. But I had a 50 Euro note that was torn ever so slightly on the edge and the hotel personnel refused to change it for me, so I could tip the room, meal and bar staff. It was weird how they chose to fuck with me over something so trivial. But they were a bunch of rude bastards anyway. So I had to decide who gave me the best service overall, and that was easy, my bartender. This little lady instantly learned what I liked and had it ready the moment I walked in. It was the best service I've had since I went on a cruise. So on my last day, after tipping her all along on the credit card, I gave her the 50 Euro note. She looked up at me in pure shock. I'll never forget her expression. Since I was leaving, luggage in hand, it was obvious I wasn't trying to get into her dress. I mentioned it to our security escort when we arrived in Jakarta and he said I had basically paid a big chunk of her bills for that month, so of course she was in shock. I also learned that "the house" got a sizable piece of her credit card tips.
It's against the law to make waitresses pay for customers dine and dash. And it's chickenshit for ANY business to take any portion of a workers tips.
Yeah, I could never understand why a business would take a portion of waiters/waitresses tips. Hate that! At club I bounced at 20 years ago, the waitresses had to divide their tips with the other waitresses and bartenders in the club. That was awful!
When I go out to eat I normally leave five dollars minimum or 15% which ever is more. A few weeks ago before all of this crazy stuff started to happen. our group ( four couples ) had dinner and a couple of drinks. We all left around a 10 -15 dollar tip each. So I would say for the group we left around 50 dollars. Did any of us complain about it ? Not at all. We had 2 waitresses taking care of our table while we were there. And they were great .Even if some of our jokes were pretty corny.
I do a standard 2 bucks in that situation. I know they're not technically serving me but someone who takes the time to properly package food in to go containers deserves at least a couple dollars. And if it's a mom and pop place I go to often, I'll tip generously no matter what. Gotta support fellow small business owners... especially now
Good question. I've often wondered that myself! That's brilliant ($2). Because I don't want to tip as much if I'm doing take out.
well damn, all this time i thought it was expected. not that i plan to stop tipping, but that's interesting to know. are you sure it wasn't here? that story sounds really familiar to me.
I usually only tip when someone is waiting on me IN the restaurant when I’m earring there. If I’m just picking up a to-go order I’ll pay in cash so I don’t have to deal with that little box on the receipt asking for a tip.
Some stylists bitch when people don't tip them. I'm not one of those stylists. My prices are a little higher than many of the girls I work with. I always tell them to charge what they are worth so they don't have to rely on tips. I don't think any less of my clients that don't tip me. I would say probably 85% do though.
