HI Scratcho, all three were born right here in America, and grew up in that area of North Carolina. The wife and husband were married in December. The husband at least was going to dentist school. There are pictures on the net showing them feeding homeless people,

to kill is wrong by anyone, at any time, for any reason, other than real self defense....this is not just a Muslim issue, but a human issue..

What I meant Asmo, is that more innocent Muslims will fall because of the types I mentioned , as soon as a bad scene happens. ----Hi storm--those kids seemed like decent americans to me. But anyone wearing muslim garb will begin to feel HEAT from situations in which they had no hand. That's just the way it is here. It's as if the civil war never ended in parts of the country and if it has become harder to kill blacks in the street-(recent scrutinization of incidents) , hell, lets shoot us some muslims. Not much difference in some ways--the blacks are lazy-indolent-criminal---the muslims ALL want to kill us and take away our way of life. This ignorance is pervasive and the 'media" bleats this continually in one form or another.

This is in many ways, a beautiful country. Drive it and one finds that there are wonderful people, helpfull folks everywhere. And the land -the topography is amazing and certainly worth seeing first hand. The idea of america with our freedoms as spelled out in our constitution is peerless. But we have to watch ourselves as regular citizens, due to the inordinate amounts of money that have completely bought our government that seemingly doesn't care a whit about the majority of us. " we don't need no stinkin' education" is manifested daily by twisted morons that carry out these types of attacks. Perhaps mandatory education with a goal of high school and 2 years of college would awaken some sense of morality/ understanding of how NOT to conduct oneself. Ahhh--never happen.

    Rambling, I guess.

It is a bit like that here too.. in some places! Overall muslims can be themselves in this country (although I am not aware how often exactly they get negative comments during the day of course, but I still see them living normally in the places I go).

And yeah, I thought you might ment it like that :) And yeah you probably noticed by now I feel very strongly about normal muslims getting stigmatized :p What I mainly ment to say in my reply is when it are primarily people with issues who commit such crimes, and there wasn't a thought out, conscious motive relating to the victim's religion, skin colour, nationality or whatever (after all it seems the murderer flipped after a parking dispute, and I didn't see pics but could he see they were muslim?), then it shouldn't be unnecessary connected to ISIS or other islamic extremists. When that happens often enough the association will be made automatically.
It is true there is an indirect connection if the murderer was indeed influenced by such associations, and I agree this is plausible (but not certain so far). It could mainly be he's the asshole of the neighbourhood that went over the edge.

One of the women was a student at nearby NC State, which does not have a dental school. UNC does.

UNC's student housing looks a lot better than that.

Two reasons it can't be avoided this time: The father of one of the victims is publicly speaking out and calling this a hate crime, and clothing visible in pictures of the victims makes the religious connection obvious.

The father who did the interview was most likely born elsewhere. Heavy accent.

I just hope nobody gets the idea that non-mainstream people (anybody other than Andy Griffith clones) who move to that area get routinely mistreated. The sidewalks on Franklin Street are constantly full of people from all over the world, with all kinds of lifestyles and cultures and belief systems. I know the local residents are worried that one guy is going to change their public image.

There was a large candlelight vigil on campus last night, and today's memorial service drew more than 5000 people. The community is sending a clear message that ethnic, racial, and religious intolerance is not okay there.

Really? What has that ever done besides give someone bragging rights about attending a protest that amounts to lip service.

I could make a witty remark about the local people worrying about their public image rather than the safety and peace of their fellow 'non-mainstream' residents but I have the feeling you didn't ment it like that :)

I think it's legitimate for them to be worried about both at the same time.

This is one of those odd places where highly incompatible cultures coexist very close together. Drive just a few miles south or west of the town, and it feels like being in an episode of Duck Dynasty. Run-down farms, trailer parks, abandoned trucks, all the visible signs of being in the backward, intolerant Old South. It may as well be Alabama. It seems light years away from the pristine liberal oasis of civilization that is Chapel Hill on a typical day.

Last night, there was another prayer vigil, this time on the NC State campus in Raleigh. Thousands showed up to show their support; the majority of them were not Muslims.

So far, no hecklers or counter-demonstrations have been seen at any of these events. That's a big relief, because after the anonymous threats of violence a couple weeks ago on the Duke campus over that Muslim call to prayer, there was widespread concern that there might be an organized group ready to take action against Muslims in the region.

But seriously, that town has got to do something about their parking situation. It's more dysfunctional than any other place in the state. Somebody takes your assigned space, you're screwed. You may have to carry your groceries 30 blocks in a driving rainstorm, 35 degrees and high winds, this time of year. Not saying it justifies murder, but it's easy to see how this can lead to violence when people refuse to follow the rules, and nobody will do anything about it. Compared to Chapel Hill, finding a space in downtown Washington is a piece of cake. Nobody there wants parking decks because of the way they look.

Now CBS has put out a show (Inside Edition) to teach Muslims how to find a parking spot, so they would not be killed by white people.

Lots of free parking wherever you go in Vegas! But it's also not much of a problem around where I live.

The worst Chapel Hill parking horror story I've heard before this week was a case where somebody came out of their house to drive to work, and found a car parked in their driveway, blocking them in. A desperate student had left it there, and gone to class. The police wouldn't touch it, saying it was a matter for civil court, because it was on private property. A local towing service wouldn't touch it without police authorization or permission from the registered owner. If the homeowner had lost his temper and vandalized the car, even without a witness of who did it, he would have been liable for the damages because it happened on his property. He had no option but to miss work.

This is an example of what Scratcho was talking about, where laws and government policies often make it nearly impossible for ordinary people to avoid miserable problems, and nobody cares.

Some of the locals who live near the campus have gotten in the habit of parking at the end of their driveways, so that there is no space for anyone to park behind them.

What happens when more than a hundred thousand people discover a cute little town and decide to spend a lot of time there? Total gridlock, unless they're willing to build enough parking decks that it isn't a cute little town anymore. Also, you get bars that are so crowded that you can't order a drink, and restaurants where you have to make reservations more than a day in advance.

Best time to visit is when the students are gone for the summer. Browse the famous used record store and used bookstore on Franklin Street, check out the free UNC art museum, and get a late afternoon drink at the rooftop patio bar on the town square, Top Of The Hill, during their happy hour drink specials. The food is good too.

The latest report is about Hick's parking spot. It seems he did live there and had an assigned parking spot. That still did not give him the right to kill someone who had parked in his spot. And he killed two others who did have their own spot. So this is a royal mess. My comment about Las Vegas had to do with the wind and the rain in NC. I was enticing you with nice dry western sunshine.

One of the local tow truck drivers had been told not to do anything for him anymore, because he called too much.

I would kill for some of that right now, with single digit temperatures headed south for the weekend. No, not really! I'll take my bad weather, and stay out of prison.

I've heard someone say come on vacation and stay on probation. But, I'll hide you in my camper and you wouldn't get arrested.

Maybe someone should launch a program that encourages introspection by Muslims. Maybe something that might clue them in about other people in the world.
