Actual liberals don't carry guns around in Chapel Hill.

I've never seen anybody carrying a gun in that town. I never see groups of shady looking characters there, and I've never run across a bad neighborhood around there. The closest poverty / high crime area seems to be near downtown Durham. Too bad Chapel Hill has been in the national news twice for violent crime. Last time, the president of the student body at UNC was raped, beaten, robbed, murdered, and her body was dumped on a residential street. The killer (angry young black man) was caught and convicted. That was back in 2010.

On a normal day, it's the kind of place where you can see convertibles parked along tree lined streets with items trustingly left on the back seat.

Where did you get that info on his reputation? Just wondering!

Local news. They're giving the story a lot more coverage than the national networks.

Not much real news happens around here, so the stations from adjacent cities may keep a news van in Chapel Hill for a week or two, like they did in 2010, obsessing on every detail.

    I agree.
Chapel Hill is less than an hour away. Tragic.
I heard on the news that the killer's wife has filed for divorce. I don't know all the laws here; but I do know you have to be separated a year before you can file for divorce...so either they reported it wrong; or they were separated. It will be interesting to see what she says.

I cannot read his mind. He killed three people inside an apartment. All three were not responsible for the parking of a car, only the driver. The killer has turned himself in. The police have not said what he has told them. If it had been the other way around, FOX news would be calling it an act of terror by Islamic extremists. I do think since the entire family was killed by execution style bullets to the head that hate was somehow a part of it.

Seems like it, but well worded when we don't know for sure (yet)! In regards to the thread title, I would probably left their religious affiliation out unless it was already certain it has something to do with the motive.

At least one of the victims' relatives has alleged that it was a hate crime, so that has to be investigated.

Would this guy have killed three people over a parking space if they had been Christians of European ancestry? I'm skeptical, at this point.

Two more pieces of relevant local background info:

Parking is a HUGE problem in Chapel Hill. Last time I had a reason to be there, I had to walk all the way to the middle of town from the city limits of Carrboro, which was almost a mile. It's the kind of place where you expect to hear people joke about being willing to kill for a parking space, but you don't expect anybody to actually do it. Sometimes there are no spaces at all in the business district, and outside that area, signs say you have to have a residential parking permit, so you're screwed.

Also, tolerance for Islam has been a big issue in that area recently, because of a controversy at Duke University in Durham. Chapel Hill and Durham touch on one side. Some administrator at Duke decided to start issuing a Muslim call to prayer every Friday at 1:00 from the chapel bell tower, which had never been done before. Most people felt this was a step too far, and Duke administration backed down. This story is still very much on everyone's mind around there. So, there may be a linkage.

If that background info (both about the parking problem and that incident at Duke university) is really connected to the murderer's motivation it seems this was done by an idiot.

People who like to carry guns all the time belong in surrounding Orange County, not inside the town of Chapel Hill. People pay big money to live in Chapel Hill and commute to work in Raleigh so that they and their children can be away from people like him. In the county, he might have found a peer group instead of foreigners who made him angry.

Chapel Hill is for liberals who like quiet neighborhoods with old sidewalks and small houses that are still very well maintained, with flower gardens in the front yard. Downtown is loaded with art galleries, upscale bars, and eclectic restaurants. No room for troublemakers.

I got it from Russia Today and a couple of others. Some had "Muslim Students" and it just stuck in the ol' brain pan. Maybe this is a case of subliminal conditioning by American supremacists?

in an article I read yesterday one of the neighbors referred to him as an equal opportunity hater. Other neighbors have had problems and verbal altercations with him and he appearantly made all the neighbors uncomfortable - the article mentioned the neighbors had a meeting abou him last year because he was such a problem.

so yeah, I really feel as if he's just an unhinged lunatic, not an islamaphobe.

UPDATE: I just took time to read Huffington Post and USA Today. They are saying the police are still investigating and the "arguement over parking" is just one part of this. The photos of the apartment of the Barakat family has "Reserved" painted on the curb for each apartment. The Barakats were married in December (less than three months ago. All three victims were Muslim but not from other countries. They were born in America, had grown up in the area, and were attending college to become dentists. What is not clear is if the killer was living there. The interview with his wife-who was divorcing him-is held at a private home, not at these apartments. The apartments seem to be student housing, maybe? The killings happened around 2am. If the killer "Hicks" did not live there, what was he doing there at the Barakat apartment at that hour?

The pictures of the students shows them smiling and from the description of them , they seemed to be well adjusted to their lives and enjoyed being here in the US. I would suggest that those young folks were just the kind of Muslims that SHOULD live in the US. My guess about the shooter is that among us walks the ignorant, willfully stupid
and fabled redneck assholes that feel threatened by anything that is beyond their limited range of reasoning. And they WILL act on their simplistic "beliefs" to do harm to those that are different than themselves. Parking problem my ass! -------------------------. I think that situations like this will become more wide spread and problematic the first time some of those sadistic morons that went to join ISIS return home and initiate a bad scene somewhere. IMO,this is going to escalate , unfortunately

What I don't get is why the media always specifies black/white/ Muslim/Christian/Catholic, etc. murdered? It's a tragedy because human lives have been lost. Period. But the media has to come up with a little something extra: as if murder is not enough. It does not matter the color or religion of the person murdered (except for higher ratings for television and such). What a slap in the face to the dead. It's totally sickening. Just my 2 cents. That's why I gave my TV to the Salvation Army 17 years ago.

I agree. There are people acting on their closemindedness and simplistic attitudes/opinions everywhere. We don't have to look just at the middle east for that, and it certainly shows that it is smart to not simply assume a convenient motive or pick a side.

A situation involving american people that joined ISIS and return home would be a different situation. I would not call it 'a situation like this' because the people killed here happen to be muslim. For all we now at this point, they would not have been killed at all if there wasn't a parking dispute to begin with ;)
