Suprisingly you are completely wrong. My psycology teacher made his PHD dissertation people with lost limbs. He told us that their world completely changes. What they used to not even be aware of (like cracks on the floor) become an obstacle in their life. They become conscience of the cracks on the floor because your body is your conscience. Your body lets you be aware of things, not your brain.

He also told us about how amputees experience a phenomenom called fantom limbs. Where they still feel their limb there. They often expereince an itch or something on the amputated limb. This happens because their world has not made them conscience of their fallen limb. What makes you realize your legs arn't there? When you need to walk (of course). Lets say you are not walking, your brain will think your legs are still attached and simulate you having an itch.

When your body (or conscience) is broken, then your brain will not be aware of things the same.

How is it a horrible disease can cause your subjective mind to operate differently?

There is no seperation between mind and body, our body is just as much our mind than our brain.

When you exercise, make love, eat, feel happy or sad, you feel it with your whole body, YOU. The brain might be the center but it's only a part of your body.

What if the brain and the body are all working together, as TrippinBTM suggested, but the real you is an intangible soul? I usually think about the brain thing, but lately, the body just feels like a medium for the soul, whatever the soul may be.

I agree that the brain controls your thoughts and your brain makes your personality. Because of that I think that the feelings are illusions that your brain creates. Don't get me wrong, I'm not against emotions, but I just think that if we can create ouf emotions than we can make them go away as well. This idea came after I realized that the brain controls our toughs.

And your body is a medium through wich outside information come to the brain. But the brain is the one that NOTICES those information

integral aspects to the brain's workings can be found along the length of the spine.

That's right. I heard of something called Kirlian (sp?) photography where using special photographic techniques they can photograph "auras." They can tell a healthy leaf from a dying one, and have captured "auras" (for lack of better term) on amputees, which fades over time (along with the phantom pains, interestingly enough). I saw one picture of a leaf that had been cut in half, but the photo showed the aura for a whole leaf, with veins and everything.

I agree with the last line you wrote there. Right on.

Katina, you say we can make our emotions go away. Well, we can also make our thoughts go away. So if we can live well without feelings and thoughts (or, at least if we can control them) then what is the brain so important for? Yes, it's like a nerve command center, but that makes it not much more than a switching station. Like those old-time phone operators, moving the wires on their switch boards.

I think it's stupid elevating one organ above the rest, when in truth they all work AS ONE.

the nervous system is part of the brain, at least when i interpret it. i admit my example of cutting off the leg would sever nerves and lead to a forcedly new perception of the world, and the phantom limb phenomenom.
in all reality, it is not just your body that effects your consciousness but the whole universe, every point in time preceding you.

however it is not much worth looking at conciousness as inclusive of all the factors that influence it, but by the parts that are necessary for it to function. ie, the brain and its sensors. but can the mind function without the body to keep it fueled? i dont think anyone can answer this but my oppinion is yes. not with our technology, but that is irrelevant.
to say that housing the self in the brain is only elevating one organ above the rest if you elevate the sense of self as being anything of more substance to the rest of the body.
