The Rendlesham Forest Incident Is this really the Roswell of the U.K.? Suffolk locals might be familiar with Rendlesham Forest- a nice place to take a relaxing stroll, walk the dog and enjoy nature. Situated near Ipswich, Google maps even lists Rendlesham Forest as a ‘good place for kids’. Many people don’t know that this Forest was the setting for one of the most well known, bizarre and believable UFO sightings in the world. Known as the Rendlesham Forest Incident, this event has been called the ‘Roswell of the U.K.’ The event took place in late December, 1980 just outside of RAF Woodbridge which was at the time used by the American Military. It was 3am on the morning of December 26th or 27th- just after Christmas. The nights were long and cold and this night was no different. A security guard standing by the east gate of RAF Woodbridge was patiently keeping watch in the chilly night air when he saw a flash of light and observed lights begin to descend from the sky over the Forest. Confused, and concerned that an aircraft may have fallen out of the sky, a few servicemen were sent to investigate. Servicemen trecked to the potential impact site and were shocked to find no crash site, no debris and no airplane but instead a large, luminous triangle craft, unlike anything they had ever seen. One serviceman-Jim Penniston-described the craft as being ‘smooth like glass’. When he touched it he said he could instantly see strange glyphs embossed on the craft surface. Amazed, the servicemen watched as the UFO retracted it’s legs, easily lifted up and manoeuvred off through the trees. They chased the craft as it left the edge of the forest and into a field before it shot high into the air and illuminated the men with bright lights. The men lost consciousness then, passing out in the field. When they came to, they found themselves back in the Forest. Other servicemen that were sent to aid the group found the landing spot in the woods and remarked on imprints in the moss and dirt- huge landing imprints that corroborated the men’s story of a craft. These were later attributed to ‘cows laying down’ by skeptics. The men returned to base, reported the incident and went back to work, amazed by their joint bizarre experience. The local police were notified but insisted they could only see the light from a local lighthouse. That was just the start of the strange events. The next night, yet again, more servicemen noticed lights in the sky. Deputy Lt. Col. Charles Halt decided to properly investigate this time and took a team of men into the woods to go and find the cause. One team with Halt went to the original landing site and there discovered that radiation levels were reading as abnormally high. Another smaller team walked on into the forest until they came across a strange, ‘pulsating fog’ that contained a growing red light. They quickly alerted the other group including Halt and this group noticed the odd light moving towards them, spitting different colours. As this light moved towards them, the smaller team could now see a glowing, domed object that appeared to have figures moving around inside it. Both parties witnessed lights, mists and other strange phenomena throughout the night, including animals at a local farm becoming incredibly restless, flashing lights through the trees and other smaller bursts of radiation. Halt had the foresight to audio record some of the incident, creating evidence of the servicemen’s experiences. The MoD insisted after this incident that there was no threat to anyone. The sightings were passed off as Meteors, stars, a lighthouse and atmospheric phenomena. Despite Halt writing a memo, all the men involved being questioned and locals reporting that they too had seen strange lights moving a round unnaturally in the sky, the event was considered by the police to be nothing more than the local lighthouse and animals acting strange. The MoD ‘failed’ to investigate further. Halt went on to insist that he had seen proof of extraterrestrials on that night and that had been covered up. Several servicemen went on to develop PTSD. Nowadays, there is a UFO trail through the forest, and sometimes reports of strange objects in the sky are made. Records of UFOs being spotted in the 1950s and 1960s are available online but a freedom of information request made to Suffolk police revealed that there were no reports made to the police in 2015-2017 of any UFO or Alien sightings. In 2006 RAF Woodbridge was taken over by the British army and became MOD Woodbridge. The recordings made by Halt on that strange night can be found here at about 1minute 40 seconds in: The Halt memo can be found here: Rendlesham Forest incident - Wikipedia What do you think? Proof of a truly bizarre encounter with extraterrestrial technology or just the overactive imagination of several American servicemen on a cold night?
