There seems to only be a shortage of jobs for stupid people.

You are so wrong that its hard for me to even explain how wrong you are. I take personal offense to the fact that you cited "machine shop jobs" as those for stupid people. I've worked in machine shops for longer than it takes to get a bachelors degree, and I am still learning.

See... You should be smart enough to design a robot to do that work for you. Then you would be out of a job.

    Wait! Wut!

While automated machine tools (CNC or computer numerical control) have replaced a large part of production machining, the machinist will never be obsolete. It takes much more to be a machinist than to program automated machine tools. The former should be a prerequisite for the latter, but often times programmers are a far cry from people who know what the hell they are doing.

Without agreeing with him I was following the OP's logic to it's bitter end. The ultimate software/hardware solution designed by someone "smart" would put everyone out of work. Including oneself.... Think something like, oh maybe, Terminator?

How many artists, physicians, bakers, mechanics, pilots, teachers are Mensa candidates. How many psycholgists, cabinet makers, farmers or authors would make the list.

The point would be that Mensa qualification don't mean shit except to the ego who receives it. It is the common man who tries a bit harder, reasons through a problem that impress me.

We need our Steve Jobs and other gifted people but we couldn't survive without the people who produce their dreams into realities.

Do you understand that even the opening paragaraph of this post in reply to me is condensending? I read your whole post and all others that you have made and I am wavering the side of the benefit of the doubt.

Your second paragraph gives me a little glimmer of maybe some hope and understanding of the frustration that many face in todays job markets and the insercurity that is felt and the ramifications for families when employment becomes an issue.

You also admit that you have some social issues and perhaps that is in part why what you have posted rubs many the wrong way. They way that you expressed your thoughts may have come accross totally differently than you meant it to. If my assumption based upon your reply is incorrect, please accept my apology.

If you read back from your first post to the others you have made, perhaps it is a communication issue. What you felt you were expressing clearly as issues such as the frustration with certain situations came accross, at least to me as being very derogatory to others who just like you or I, work for a living. Some probably far harder than I do and are compensated far less for their efforts and skills.

The future is still not written and to assume that the human element will be replaced is in my opinion not realistic. While we do explore the technology and progress, time has shown that the human part of all business or interactions is still what finishes the deal or the implementaion of the technology.

You have a skill set, why can you not use it for the positive or how can you then use it for the better of society and man. I want to know how you can rewire the negative into a positive. Make a difference then with the skills you have and market that. It is all in where you set out with a goal or mind set, use it to be a change. Someone has to, why not you?

A machine will never be able to put it's soul into a piece of work. Some things will always require just that level of craftmanship and will never be replaced.

    The planet dying is inevitable.

Being a botanist IS extremely important. My lists of things that are intelligent is just off the top of my head.

But one thing that ABSOLUTELY must be done is someone needs to figure out how to develop an entirely self-contained, automated aquaponics facility to grow mass amounts of food in extremely small spaces by use of robotics, so there is very little human involvement needed. This will at first make it very cheap and efficient to produce large amounts of food in the middle of cities. But ultimately this technology is what go on our intergalactic ships and will feed us as we go into space.

Getting a botanist (or someone highly experienced in aquaponics), to eventually help me build this system is something I plan to do at some point.

In my state you get $1300 a month to cover living expenses to go to school. Anyone can go get educated in any kind of complex trade, all except for the homeless.

But one of my last roommates WAS homeless, and he got his shit together, and put the will to actually growing a brain, found someone to help him who would let him live with them, until his financial aid came through, and hes been living on his own now, on his 3rd year of a bachelors degree.

I feel like there is no excuse at this day and age to not be exactly where you want to be.

What an asshole I am for saying you can create your entire own reality...

I wanted to be a machinist myself at some point. I am almost positive you will have a great life, making lots of money as machinist for decades to come. But the time is set on such a job. It's only a matter of time before humans are no longer needed in the manufacturing of anything at all...

    look at this website:

    www.shapeways.com

You upload a computer 3D model, they then have an automated facility that will 3D print your model in anything from plastic, ceramic to stainless steel and then ship it to you.

Right now 3D printing technology cannot replace all manufacturing process, but eventually it will... Will that be in 100 years? I don't know, but I suspect we will see an extremely large amount of manufacutring workers displaced by the advancements of 3D printing technology in about 20 years.

You people don't understand I am not saying Im better than you. What is this weird preoccupation with being 'better' or 'worse'.

I am saying pay attention to reality. If your doing the job a robot can do, your going to not survive as long as if you start learning to do the job only a human can do. Doing the job a robot can do is like driving towards a dead end, while saying "this is me, this is what I am, you dont understand".

    Hello,

I wish it would be like this. People tend to buy cheap things. One way to make things cheaper is automation. So the conclusion is, I think, that automation stops when humans can produce a good at a similar price or even cheaper then a machine can do. The other boundary is things that can't be done by machines (yet). That might be quality control for instance. And there is creativity and art. AFAIK there are algorithms available that can produce pictures and sounds that are nice to watch and to listen to. Using machines in this area is more a form of creativity and art in itself.

In my opinion everything speaks against the 'never be replaced' argument. But there is hope. Maybe. What happens to all the people that would be fired because a machine will replace them? Do they get their welfare checks for 26 weeks and then they become homeless? All of them? Maybe society changes again like it has done in the past? Maybe we find ways to enable everyone to have a sustainable and good life with less time spent in labour for the individual person. That would push up lots of people a few levels in Maslows' Hierarchie. I think that leads to more creativity and people start building things again, because they like it and it doesn't matter to them, if they need 15 minutes to build a cabinet from press board or if they need 15 weeks to build one from massive wood, with ornaments etc. I'm sure they will not build the 15 minute cabinet ;).

    Regards
    Gyro

    I am a little condescending I know.

To me its like being a parent and your kids keep leaving dirty dishes and shit all over the house and you have to walk in and say what the fuck is going on? Is it really that hard to clean your dish and pick up after yourself? Are you that lazy and stupid? Pull your own weight, put in an equal share.

And at this point in time where the main push of evolution is replacing humanity with robots and getting into space... the only people who seem even capable of helping humanity along in this process is those who are highly technologically fluent. So now it's like being a parent taking care of a child with down syndrome, who literally doesn't possess the mental capacity to pull their own load. And it's just like, is the point of life really to keep every living creature on this planet breathing, eating and shitting?

The first creatures to evolve eyeballs and see could swim places that ensured their survival and the ones who didn't were left behind. The first creatures to grow legs walked out of the ocean, leaving those who didn't to still be in the ocean. The first creatures who learn to fully utilize and integrate themselves with technology will be what? What if we are right now living through the full pronunciation of a new evolutionary step, a new type of human consciousness is emerging.

I know the glory and the beauty of the enlightened view of Buddha, the entire world in peace loving harmony, everyone caring for each other, supporting all living creatures. But the world doesn't seem to be going this way. What if thats just a comforting story and not reflectant of actual reality?
