There seems to only be a shortage of jobs for stupid people.

I want to chime in on this thread that Retired Hippie and Gyro have going about engineer's pitfalls.

As far as engineers being well educated, but not well inclined to practical matters; it is often true, and most experienced tradespeople are familiar with this. It's kind of a joke that's funny because it's true. I've worked with engineering interns that LITERALLY could not read a tape measure. In the machining and mechanical engineering relationship it is a well known fact demonstrated by numerous articles and and other writings that are dedicated to remedying the matter that engineers often do not do well in designing parts that can actually be manufactured in reality, and not just on paper or a software program.

Not every engineer is working on getting the human race established on Mars. In fact, when an engineer is first out of school and on the job, they often start off with some rather menial tasks that most people would be capable of.

    Hello,

yeah, but why is it like that? I, as maybe everybody ;), have some theories about that. As a young boy I had the chance to take things apart and to build things like carts, tree houses, radios etc. I mixed explosives and burned my hair more than once. If you buy chemicals nowadays you will attract more coppers than a bank raid. Things are complicate today. You can take apart a radio from the 1970 and understand how it works. You can't do this with a cell phone or even a cheap radio from today. So the starting conditions are different today.

And then there are the universities. For some reason that I can't fully understand my country switched over from engineering degrees to the bachelor/master crap. It boils down to learn more theoretical stuff in less time for todays students. Usually they don't have the time to look deeper into things that are interesting, but that are unfortunately not in the curriculum. Usually EE students don't learn how to solder. They can simulate ICs in software, but rarely build a sample of the beast they designed, etcpp. There are many more aspects of the problem, I just picked randomly two of them ;).

    Regards
    Gyro

OP seems to lack compassion. The stream of thought suggests that more than it says anything about the employment situation. Placing any value in the opinion would be the height of stupidity on my part.

you seem to be making the classic mistake of assuming that people who don't share your interests are stupid and incapable of understanding the things you're interested in.

kinky ramona doesn't just cook, she manages and coordinates a store and the people working there. i'm sure you could do that job if you spent some time learning it, but it's not what you're interested in. that doesn't make you stupid and incapable of understanding how a fast food place functions, it just means you have a different set of skills. likewise, people who have been having constant sex since they were 13 could say that you're stupid and seemingly incapable of getting sex, but really it's just not what you spent most of your time on, so you developed a different set of skills than they did.

personally, i'd rather work to find a job that's somewhat enjoyable and fulfilling than be miserable programming computers. i know damn well that i could learn to be a programmer if i wanted, but i just have no desire to spend my time learning to do and then doing a job that i would hate.

Oh man, I just went through years of school to be a Botanist only to find out that I am stupid because I chose that over mathematics. Damn.

Thank you for enlightening me about my stupidity.

Personally I think things like people no longer knowing how to grow their own food, or even the most fundamental things about the natural world is going to be what leads to our ultimate end.

the problem is - these businesses you speak of

they are unwilling to employ without stringent experience

    so 'stupid people' cannot apply

    and furthermore

'stupid people' can't get a even a shitty job to pay for tuition fees

so they could even aspire to apply for these jobs you speak of.

it's one thing to say you're intelligent - but let's be fair

it's all down to the paperwork these days.

ironically - it is because of those who are meant to be more intelligent

that the world is so fucked in the first place

and tuition fees are so high

as are the number of lower paying jobs are so low (cutting the fat of organization).

I'm going to address just one of the disgusting and - well - "stupid" assumptions the OP makes: Lack of, or little access to, education makes a person "stupid". The OP obviously has very limited experience with anyone or anything outside his/her very limited world and is simply ignorant of the fact that there are plenty of very talented and gifted people in this world who never have the opportunity to develop and/or monetize those talents and gifts for any number of legitimate socioeconomic reasons. This is just another version of the misguided conservative mythos - in other words "the creme always rises to the top" which anyone who was not born into a world of privilege and wealth knows is bullshit. Also, if programming and mathematical skills are the only skills necessary to achieve financial security in this world, how do you explain the hordes of unemployed programmers? I personally know of 3 - all are well educated, responsible people, who would gladly work for a living wage. So if you have any leads please pass them on. Thanks.

This ^ is true. And OP who the hell is going to serve your stupid ass when you are hungry and your craving fast food huh? If I knew you I would fucking spit in your food and smile as big as I could at you while you bite into your burger and say "Mmm...this is good", but lucky for you I don't know you or work for fast food.

According to an earlier post a machine is going to serve his fast food as soon as he designs one..... until then I guess he goes hungry...... Very smart. :2thumbsup:

These "wondrous" machines spoken of, replace people that had jobs, not make jobs easier for workers. If a machine replaces you(for example=auto manufacturing) ,you don't get to sit over on the side watching it and collecting your pay--your ass is out the door. Oh boy. The company wins again.

Ever been in a grocery store when the power goes out? Standing around with 40-50 other dumb-asses with carts full of groceries waiting for computer technology to allow you to leave? Just thought I'd ask.

Next time you have a roof leak--call a computer genius.

Someone needs to drop an EMP on this thread then see what happens to your machine world when a sudden burst of electromagnetic radiation from the sun brings the entire planet to a grinding halt [IMG]

Well Rygoody I expect you're kind of wishing you had thought out your posting a bit better. Thats the human touch, no formula in math explains it, no computer comforts you when you feel isolated and unliked. Compassion cannot be built into machines. The warmth of a human hand holding your hand in a time of grief cannot be matched by the heat generated from your beloved machines. You might do well to find some stupid person who is in touch with his/her own world and learn from them.

Arrogance serves to build walls between people. It is quite hard to feel kindly toward someone who holds themself as "special" or elite. Cultivating a bit of understanding about the real, natural world around you might be useful. Coming to understand the many ways that human intelligence manifests in people could be quite eye opening for you. For your sake I hope you can manage those skills before you really need help from those of us you consider stupid and beneath you.

OP, I couldn't be bothered to finish reading your unreasonably long post, but I pose this question, what do you mean by, "there seems to be" an abundance of skilled jobs available? Are you referencing some statistical data or just noticing that there are more newspaper ads for engineers, HVAC specialists, and accountants than cashiers?

Unskilled labor can become obsolete when college becomes free. Just because a person doesn't have special certification doesn't mean they are stupid and the world still wants people to bag groceries.

I think it's sad for you to consider yourself and the OP as stupid people. Perhaps you just have different skill sets than others.
