They did in the Afghanistan war of 1979 when the US supplied them with Stinger AA missiles ,that brought down the Soviet Helicopter Gunships .
The Soviets left after nearly 10 years

Re: That column of supply vehicles. Reminds me of a story I saw from an Afgan War veteran, of how their column of tanks got caught on a narrow road. The tracks got blown off the first, halting the column, then the last one got hit also. They were stuck. I think I remember they wound up losing four tanks from that ambush.

If some of those in the Russian column are (probably) fuel tanks, and the Ukrainians DO have RPGs, well, the potential is there.

Apologies guys ,I am playing the grim reaper again with more grim news.

I have seen footage this evening from cluster bombs with submunitions being used against civilians . Its illegaL for their uses against such targets.
    another atrocity

Even if Putin uses just one of the 'low-yield', few kilotons, artillery-type nukes, the whole flipping world would unload economic disaster on that country, ordinary population be damned.

CNN and MSNBC both have that Lt Col Vindman (ret) commenting. He spent 20 yrs specializing in the Intelligence service studying daily Russia, Putin, their military, thinking, etc. Well-thought-out comments. And also Gen Wesley Clark (ret) who was Commander of NATO Forces for years. Another knowledge-able mind.

Couple of thoughts from later this afternoon.

The vid clip from Russian TV of Putin at one end of a 25 ft long table and 3 of his Generals and 3 'advisors' at the other end. I just wonder behind those stony, expressionless, blank faces, how many are saying, 'ok, boss, got it, boss', and how many were thinking, "You pig-faced fat fuck, if I could get down there....."

And another note, looking at the dire, freezing situation in Poland with the thousands of refugees. How difficult would it be for our US Military Transport and Supply section, to load up a couple of the giant transport aircraft with tents, blankets, cots? Since we already have a couple of thousand (not-to-be-used-in-combat) troops over there for manpower to use. I suppose military minds move and react slower than the rest of us. Protocol, and all that.

  16. The news is reporting the column from the north is 40 miles long and 2 to 3 vehicles wide in spots. This has to be a substantial percentage of Russian forces! If they get bottlenecked at a pinch point it could be a monkey F.

Peace talks between Russia and Ukraine failed and a Russian military convoy headed toward Kyiv is 40 miles long...

As hard as the Ukranians are resisting it still seems inevitable that they will fall. At best this will be a costly war for Russia, both in casualties and in hits to their economy. It should make them reconsider any further aggressions, but I'm not so sure Putin would see it that way. I don't know how all of this will end, the best scenario is Russia rises up and ousts Putin, the worst is WW III.
