Okay, I went there... and yes I knew 'locking' was a way of saying their extreme strength makes them hold on and not a physical mechanism, like something in the bones of their jaw. But it also says "Many bull breeds show an inbred desire to grasp and hold -- a leftover trait from the days when they worked on farms and used as 'Butcher's Dogs' to grab onto the noses of bulls (i.e. "Take the bull by the nose")." And, on the 'owning' page "Pit Bulls are Typically Strong Willed" & "They'll happily run your household for you if you aren't ready to dish out firm guidelines. This means you'll need to be a fair, decisive handler. Obedience training is a must." (While one of my main complaints about *many* dog owners is that they don't give a shit about training their dog at all, and there's no law or anything making sure owners of *any* breed do such a thing). Sorry, but none of this makes me feel any better that the dog isn't likely to do a more-than-average damage in case he does attack (it first says it's a matter of strength and will, and then says they're very strong & very strong-willed!), and neither does it tell me how to persuade him to let go if he does grab a hold of someone or something...
"There are no bad dogs, only bad owners." While not true in every instance (because Nature loves her little surprises), it is true in an overwhelming number of cases. Now, one has to realize that some breeds (note the word breeds) have different traits than other breeds. Pit bulls, one breed among many, are known for loyalty to the "pack" and for a bit more agressiveness than other breeds. It's in their nature because it is how they were bred. Rotweilers too. A friend's rottie, all 125 pounds of him, is a cream puff, until the daughter squeals because Dad's tickling her. Then we gots bidness! Even my friend has to back off and the daughter has to let the dog know she's OK. Loyalty. Creator help the fool that ever breaks into that house! I have an idea.... let's put the abusers of those dogs into the pit, naked and beaten half to death... and then open the cage and walk away. As they sow, so shall they reap. Proper!
Additionally... Dogs come from a pack heritage. There is an Alpha male and an Alpha female in every pack - the dominant pair. It is neither right nor wrong - it is nature. When one owns a dog that has willfullness in it's breeding, one has to acknowledge that fact and accept that they must be the Alpha. Being the Alpha doesn't mean being cruel. No, in fact, it carries great responsiblility. Fairness; consistancy; firmness; harshness when needed, but never more than needed; and above all - love. I wish there were as many good owners as there are good dogs. dmt, that's a sweetie!
my daughter got bit in the forehead by a dog who was great around kids. he was a lab husky mix and never bit before.he had 3 kids in his home who he loved very much!!all from the ages of 3 to 11. all my daughter did was give him a hug, wich she had done a million times before, he always gave her kisses back. after she gave him a hug the 2nd day we sat him she was going to get up and he growled and struck her!! it happened so fast and i freeked, blood was running down her forehead so we didnt know how bad of a bite until we washed it off. luckily it was a fang puncture, instead of a gash, god he could have mauled her whole face........... so f**ken scary. The owner was as shook up about it as we were and its things like this that cant be explained!!(i was dog sitting ) now she has a permanant scar, more like an indent in her forehead, right between her eyes, im trying creams like mederma to see if it will go away. God i hope so shes just about to be 2 yrs old.this just happened a month ago. fact is its not just pits that bite!!! Its any dog, at anytime, even if they love people and kids!!!! HYPERSPACE LOVE YOUR PUP!!!YOUR SOOO LUCKY!!SO BEAUTIFUL!!
Michael, I am not a hateful person, but you're seriously making me mad. First of all, write like an intelligent person with correct grammar and spelling. You're not sixteen. Secondly, no dog is bad. High energy dogs, when abused, can become aggressive. Your "friend" was not responsible. Dogs are not animals that can be tossed out on farms. They need to be inside with loving families from birth. Mass producing animals and keeping them outside is no more humane than keeping children in orphanages. (Hey, and those kids often have emotional issues too; are they born bad? Kill the pitbulls and the orphans!) Thirdly, to call any dog an abomination is absurd. Humans are abominations, misusing some of the most innocent animals on earth. As far as bulldogs not being to have sex, that's just crazy. Anyone you believes that is a naive twit. Please do the world a favor and get some animal education instead of preaching about something you have no clue about!
BTW, Skye, I had a similar deep cat scratch on my face when I was a little older than your daughter. Try cocoa butter and shea butter! I'm normal.
There are jackasses here that fight their dogs,(like those other dumb fucks who fight roosters!)A dog (ANY DOG)can be MADE mean. These people will steal pet dogs from yards to train their dogs with,be aware! They can be loyal pets,I had one for 12 years. He never once chewed up a kid!Don't 'brand' them as being a bad breed. Treat a dog mean, they'll lash out.A person will do the same.Somewhere down the line, these people, who do cruel things, must've been kicked around early in life to have learned this meaness."Love Your Children !"
I had the pleasure of caring for a pit for a bit of time (never owned one) and he was the sweetest, most loyal dog I have ever known. I love big dogs in general, but after caring for this one I have decided that I would like to have a pit one day when my living situation allows it. He was huge and he thought he was a lap dog....whenever I would sit down he would jump on my lap and he was so so heavy I couldn't move underneath him.....I'd have to say "treat" and then he'd jump off for a treat allowing me to get up. I felt safe with him near me. We took good care of each other. In any case...abyle I very much agree with all the things you've said in this thread...right on.
The best dog I ever had was a pit bull...Some one ran off the road to hit it . What makes me mad is how people blame pits about all the bad things dog do....On a 7 year survey about dog bites pitbulls were like 4th i think...from the bottom this beign out of 100 dogs a cocker spainal is more dangours
I still miss any advice on what to do if a pitbull does attack, on how to persuade one to let go... & no one has responded to my question not about dog bites statistics in general but about *fatal* dog bites -I'd rather not be attacked at all of course but I'd consider a dozen non-fatal bites from a cocker spaniel less dangerous than a single deadly attack by a pitbull. And while I do agree that a bad owner can make any dog dangerous, I also notice no one answers my concerns that so many people *don't* bother to train their dogs (pitbulls or other dogs) -anyone has any suggestions what can be done about that? Half the dogs that are being walked here are not leashed; there's no leash law in my home town and near my work place there *is* a leash law on the bicycle path I use daily but it's rarely enforced so still half the people don't bother (while there's a dog park about half a mile down & plenty of roads that don't have 'leash your dog' signs all over the place )... I called the town hall once after a collie chased after me and the owner got mad at me for saying something about it and they said they'd check it out but of course nothing really changed... maybe they did go out there once or maybe they didn't but there was never any noticable difference in how many dogs are leashed.
if a pit attacks(viciosly no just a bite) you hit him in the head with a blunt object and pray. just like with any big dog.they are extemely strong and agile but only wiegh 50 pounds.id be more worried about the weight of a 100+ pound dog knocking me down to the ground than a pit bull. they dont have stronger jaws either and basicaly any dog that bites down hard you wont be able to open thier jaw, even a humans. bite down hard and try to open your lower jaw.the thing about pits is that they are gamier(endurance and strong willed) than other breeds. but once again their size cancels that out a bit. id be alot easier to dominate a 50 pound dog than a 100+ pounder. a good example. in a dog fight between a pit and a rottwieller. the rottie would dominate the fight and do damage quicker untill it got tired.then the pit would finish him off and thats why they are succesful fighting dogs, plus have better wrestling skills and thier necks are designed so the other dog cant grab it when he bites down, actually they are slippery fuckers all around i can never hold my dog down unless i use the collar or legs. but no rottwieller can take a pitbull by its legs and slam him in the ground edited for clarity
Hitting the dog on the nose is a prime place to get them off of you. Also, try sticking your fingers in the dog's eyes if attacked.
they dont lock their jaws. thats a common myth... they also dont have a third set of teeth, another missconception. the Golden Retriever is a more common biter then the pitbul. The lab has been the cause of alot more bites in a year then the Pitbul. or any breed of pittie. I have never met one mean pittie, but i have met mean shelties, goldens, labs, boxers, dobies, and rotties... out of over 100 + pitties i have met not one has snarled, bitten or "scratched" me... sorry but people like you are why i wanted to post this... it isnt the breed of dog, it is how your raise them .. End of story.
i hardly ever keep my siberian husky on the leash, because she is trained... there is a fine if a dog is caught off leash int he area though, 75$ or somthing lame...
what the fuck?? what kinda comment was that?? Pitties are innocent, it is the people that are to blame. the people that raise them to be fighter. your a dork..
ehem. i cant tell if your being sarcastic or not. when did i say that. and if you had read my other posts you would have known (if you are refering to the locking jaw myth) and that im a pit lover.but shit how can you sit there and say a pit has never bit down on some one and not let go. not the locking jaw, myth.
Aw, that was really sad. My exbf has a pit...and he's sweet as pie to his owner...but to me...he wouldn't let me touch him..maybe he was jealous
