Well for a start it wouldnt just be a hair cut it would be bleaching and blonding... i dont enjoy the idea of sticking chemicals in my hair at the moment. Also i dont change myself because someone else says i should, and a hair cut is one thing if i WANT it but if im TOLD to have one to see if i ENJOY it ... thats not my thing. ive had short hair in the past. To be honest i dont think the guy quite grasps it wouldnt be a haircut with dreads it would be a shaved head. heres a story a good friend told me and its effected my mindset more than you can imagine: a boy and his dad walk along a beach. on the floor thousands of starfish are beached slowly dieing in the sun. The boy bends down as hes walking and starts throwing the starfish back into the ocean one by one. his dad stops and turns to him and says "son, why are you doing that, there are thousands of starfish all dieing on this beach, and only one of you, you'll never make a difference" the little boy bent down and picked up andother starfish, and threw it into the ocean. he looked at his father and said "made a difference to that one" I dont imagine i could ever change the whole industry single handedly however if i change the mindset even slightly of ONE person who see's the magazine... then that will make me happy. if women never thought that one of them speaking out could ever change the mind set of men... we'd never had got the vote. If martin luther king had thought "who am i? one black guy verses a world of white men? i've got no chance to make a change" racism would still run our lives. i dont propose to change the world... one thought in someones mind to think otherwise would make me happy..
If it weren't for the fact that they're telling you they want to fix you up because it'll sell more copies, I'd say go on and "step out of your comfort zone." Maybe you're afraid to? But..since the magazine is more focused on money than the actual issues, I'd e-mail them back with a nice fat fuck-you. They seem like idiots, and with that kind of attitude that you got from those emails, they won't "make it big."
I could write them a letter reminding them that college age girls do NOT want to see women who do not look like someone they could emulate or respect. For instance, Paris Hilton might have "sex appeal" to some, but seeing every bone stick out of her body is anything but. Who buys magazines for who's on the cover anyway? I really want to give a verbal bitch slap to these people. I guess I must just be insane that I want to see someone original on the cover of a magazine. I know how you feel though... when I was younger my mom tried to get me to model for a plus size clothing store and they told me that I needed to lose weight, even though at the time I wore a size medium. Apparently their idea of a plus size model was someone who was still extremely skinny but with a few more curves than the average model. That's why I gave up on all those magazines and all- they claim to want to show real girls but instead they show girls who fit the mainstream look of the hour, then drop them. Meh. It's stupid.
im not afraid at all. If i was afraid of looking different to how i usually look i wouldnt be in theatre The only issue i have about changing me is cutting the dreads becuase i've had them for a year and a half and its not in my plans to cut them any time soon. So if i was doing this to experiance "modeling" then yea id be fine with it... but if you read my first mail to them then you will see that i had a point to being on the cover as me. What bothers me is that they READ my origional mail... and KNEW i wasnt what they wanted mentally... yet they still mailed me back!
oh gorgeous fleassy... i think you should stick to yer guns...perhaps a fuck off is in order on yer side here... when i read that reponse from them i see that they dont get why you even wanna be on the cover...they are wanting to change you...why? yer lovely as ya are...I, personally dont buy mags for who is on the cover but not everyone is as deep and complex as i...lol..I judge a mags value on how much of it im actually gonna read... I want ya to be on the cover...but on yer terms...
im not railing against his mind. Its an attempt to get people to accept things a bit more. Putting it in the media is a good way of doing that.
fleass you are beautiful. u do not need to change which i'm sure you know and have been told. These people as u are aware do not care...they do not want anything apart from the potential money they can earn. I honestly think they would make more money with someon who looked like you rather than some blonde bimboesque image. please dont let them change you. You can still follow your dream of being pampered and made up but i think u should shop around and find a magazine that is supportive of you and that way i think you will enjoy it more. Roly...xxx
I suggest you don't go for it. The starfish story s a good example of why I think this. Plus I think you'll feel way better and healthier if you choose not to. It'll increase your power. Your power of being alive and authentically you. And your power of choosing what you feel is right. The girl in you that's going 'wooowwwwy' is the one that doesn't feel quite as good as the plastic dolls on front of magazines. The girl that says 'nah they don't get it' is the one that is deeply rooted in the truth of being Alive.
It's really simple. Will being on the cover of a magazine make you happy? If so, then do it. You won't achieve anything by not doing it. If compromising your individuality to that extent sickens you to the point where it takes all the fun out of it, then don't do it. Job done.
