I know that civilian bombing is unjustifiable but the Germans were the first to blanket bomb civilian areas when they destroyed: Coventry well before Dresden. They firebombed London during the Blitz killing many tens of thousands.
The responsibiliy for all the pain & suffering lies with a criminal who became a dictator of a civilized nation:Adolf Hitler.

    [size=+3]U.S./British Massacre at Dresden[/size]

Mussolini’s use of terror bombing in Ethiopia was inspired by the doctrines of Italian general Giulio Douhet, whose 1921 treatise, The Command of the Air, became the bible for the “strategic bombing” plans of all the imperialists, fascist and “democratic” alike. While such horrific plans could be tried out against Kurdish and Ethiopian peasant soldiers in hills and mountains, their ultimate target is the population of large urban concentrations, and the proletariat in particular. In 1920, at a time when many European rulers shook in fear of workers revolution “at home,” the chief of the British Air Staff, Sir Hugh Trenchard, wrote in a paper that the Royal Air Force could even suppress “industrial disturbances or risings” in England itself (David Omissi, “Baghdad and British Bombers,” Guardian [London], 19 January 1991). Churchill told Trenchard not to refer to this proposal again, but 20 years later, during the second imperialist world war, both the “Axis” and the “Allies” put Douhet’s plans into practice.

Hitler was notorious for sending his Luftwaffe (air force) to annihilate Rotterdam, Holland in May 1940, killing 30,000 people in an effort to bomb the Dutch population into submission; for his bombing of the English cathedral town of Coventry later that year, which killed 500 in a single ten-hour raid; and for the London Blitz, lasting from September 1940 to May 1941, in which over 20,000 civilians were killed. The German military developed this into the doctrine of “Schrecklichkeit” (frightfulness), which was defined by Chris Cook’s Dictionary of Historical Terms (1983) as the “deliberate policy of committing atrocities to subdue a subject people.” This Nazi policy was the direct antecedent of the Pentagon’s air war doctrine, “Shock and Awe,” which was precisely intended to terrorize the Iraqi population into submission.

But even in World War II, the German fascist dictator was rivaled on this score by the imperialist Allies, both the British and the Americans, who between them slaughtered an estimated 635,000 German civilians with their terror bombing. R.H.S. Crossman (a right-wing social democrat and later cabinet minister, then in charge of psychological warfare against Germany for the Foreign Office) reports that in the early years of WWII there was a debate in the British government over the use of bombers against the German population. Fearing heavy casualties from a European landing, Prime Minister Churchill was willingly persuaded by the Air Marshalls that priority should be given not to opening a Second Front on the continent but to building bombers to pound German cities until the population had been, as Crossman put it, “systematically ‘de-housed’ and pulverized into surrender.”

The bombing was deliberately aimed at the terrorizing the German proletariat. A February 1942 directive to the Bomber Command contained the following Valentine's Day message: “You are accordingly authorized to employ your forces without restriction . . . (operations) should now be focused on the moral of the enemy civil population and in particular, of the industrial workers.” Placed in charge of the command that carried out the raids was none other than “Bomber Harris,” who got his start indiscriminately killing Iraqis.

The “democratic” British leader had no compunction about deliberately targeting the civilian population: “Now everyone's at it,” Churchill was quoted as saying. “It's simply a question of fashion - similar to that of whether short or long dresses are in” (quoted in Mickey Z., “From Dresden to Baghdad: 58 Years of ‘Shock and Awe’,” On-Line Journal, 13 February). By July 1943, Harris had perfected the technique of firebombing to the point that the Allies were able to create a firestorm in Hamburg, killing 50,000 civilians. The bombers deliberately targeted densely populated areas rather than industrial or transportation districts; incendiary and high-explosive bombs were dropped, the latter in order to destroy metallic roofs. By concentrating fire in an area they could create an inferno, causing huge numbers of casualties not only from burns, but also from smoke inhalation, carbon monoxide poisoning and asphyxiation, as the oxygen is sucked out by the conflagration. This was not accidental, but deliberate mass murder.

Toward the end of 1944, the Allies caused firestorms in more than half a dozen German cities, culminating in the firebombing of Dresden on 13-14 February 1945, perhaps the largest single massacre in history. The purpose was not to hit military or industrial objectives – there were few such targets in the area, no munitions plants, the rail yards were not hit – but to cause maximum casualties in order to intimidate the Soviets, whose army crossed the Oder River at the end of January headed for Berlin. An internal RAF memo said that Dresden was jammed full of “refugees pouring westwards…. The intentions of the attack are to hit the enemy where he will feel it most...and to show the Russians when they arrive what Bomber Command can do.” Air Marshall Harris designed the Dresden raid to first create a firestorm and then spread it with subsequent attacks to kill the survivors. Thousands of individual fires came together, whipping up huge winds and superheated air. Crossman writes:

“The fire storm transformed thousands of individual blazes into a sea of flames, ripping off the roofs, tossing trees, cars and lorries into the air, and simultaneously sucking the oxygen out of the air-raid shelters.
”Most of those who remained below ground were to die painlessly, their bodies first brilliantly tinted bright orange and blue, and then, as the heat grew intense, either totally incinerated or melted into a thick liquid sometimes three or four feet deep.”
–R.H.S. Crossman, “Apocalypse at Dresden,” Esquire, November 1963
Mickey Z. has an equally grisly account:

“Seventy percent of the Dresden dead either suffocated or died from poison gases that turned their bodies green and red. The intense heat melted some bodies into the pavement like bubblegum, or shrunk them into three-foot long charred carcasses. Clean-up crews wore rubber boots to wade through the ‘human soup’ found in nearby caves. In other cases, the superheated air propelled victims skyward only to come down in tiny pieces as far as fifteen miles outside Dresden.”
After the first wave of British bombers came a second wave three hours later, designed to spread the fire to the huge open area of the royal park and to the great square in front of the railway station – places where thousands of survivors had fled – and to hit every one of the 19 hospitals in the city. Then, as the survivors (many of them crippled) were gathering their meager strength the next morning a third wave of bombers and fighters hit the city. This time the USAF which strafed the royal park and the roads out of town, deliberately machine-gunning the defenseless crowds of refugees.

How many were killed? The figure of 225,000 was widely circulated; Crossman estimates upwards of 150,000. Fascist “historians” like David Irving have long pointed to the Dresden massacre in order to relativize the Nazi Holocaust of the Jewish people and to absolve the Nazi regime of its horrendous crimes. Yet the Dresden massacre was one of the most horrific war crimes in history, and one carried out by the “democratic” imperialists. For his services rendered to the British Empire, “Bomber” Harris later received a Knights Grand Cross from the Queen (as well as a Legion of Merit from the U.S.).

Left: Tokyo after bombing by U.S. in March 1945. The incendiary bombs, a mixture of thermite and oxydizing agents sometimes including napalm, burned 200 km2 of the Japanese capital, killing more than 100,000 people. (Photo: Dave Davis/AP)

When news concerning the bombing of Dresden got out, it led to an uproar that had to be quieted by cynical denials that this was U.S. or British policy. But it was, and it continued, now against Japan. In March 1945, more than 100,000 Japanese were killed in a firebombing raid on Tokyo as “canals boiled, metal melted, and buildings and human beings burst spontaneously into flames” (John Dower, War Without Mercy: Race & Power in the Pacific War [Pantheon Books, 1986]). By August 1945, 58 Japanese cities had been firebombed and the bomber commander, General Curtis LeMay, had to curtail his raids because he had run out of incendiary bombs. After the war, Le May remarked “I suppose if I had lost the war, I would have been tried as a war criminal.” Instead he was promoted, eventually heading the Strategic Air Command, where he advocated a pre-emptive nuclear “first strike” against the Soviets. During the Vietnam War, Le May notoriously called to “bomb them [the North Vietnamese] back into the Stone Age.”

The firebombing of Japanese cities culminated in the atomic bombing of Hiroshima on 6 August 1945 and Nagasaki three days later, slaughtering more than 200,000 Japanese. The purpose was not to “hasten the end of the war,” as was claimed, for secret negotiations for Japanese surrender were already underway when the bombs were dropped. As in Dresden, these were not military targets: the horrendous death toll of the civilian population was the intended purpose of the raids. And as at Dresden, the key purpose of the A-bombing of Japan was to serve as a warning to the Soviet Union (which following the Red Army’s victory over Nazi Germany had just turned its forces against Japan) of the lengths to which bloodthirsty U.S. imperialism would go to annihilate its enemies. And indeed, in the subsequent wars against North Korea and Vietnam during the half-century long anti-Soviet Cold War, American armies and their puppet forces slaughtered some six million Koreans and Vietnamese. n

Though your brother's bound and gagged
And they've chained him to a chair
Won't you please come to Chicago
    Just to sing

In a land that's known as freedom
How can such a thing be fair
Won't you please come to Chicago
For the help we can bring

We can change the world -
    Rearrange the world
It's dying - to get better

    Politicians sit yourself down,
    There's nothing for you here
Won't you please come to Chicago
    For a ride

Don't ask Jack to help you
Cause he'll turn the other ear
Won't you please come to Chicago
Or else join the other side

We can change the world -
    Rearrange the world

It's dying - if you believe in justice
It's dying - and if you believe in freedom
It's dying - let a man live it's own life
It's dying - rules and regulations, who needs them
    Open up the door

    Somehow people must be free
I hope the day comes soon
Won't you please come to Chicago
    Show your face

From the bottom to the ocean
To the mountains of the moon
Won't you please come to Chicago
No one else can take your place

We can change the world -
    Rearrange the world

It's dying - if you believe in justice
It's dying - and if you believe in freedom
It's dying - let a man live it's own life

Tin soldiers and Nixon's coming, we're finally on our own.

LOS ANGELES - A man under investigation in the crash of an exotic $1 million Ferrari in Malibu has been booked on suspicion of grand theft, officials said Sunday.

Stefan Eriksson, 44, was arrested at his Bel-Air home Saturday night after detectives served a search warrant, the Sheriff's Department said in a statement. It wasn't immediately clear whether sheriff's officials suspect Eriksson stole the Ferrari. Eriksson, a Swedish video game entrepreneur, was being held without bail. Authorities also placed an immigration hold on him.

Eriksson was in a red Ferrari Enzo that was traveling an estimated 162 mph when it hit a pole along Pacific Coast Highway and all but disintegrated in February. He escaped the crash with only a cut lip.

The crash spun into a complicated web of mystery when Eriksson told authorities he was a passenger in the car and that the driver, a German acquaintance he knew only as Dietrich, ran into the nearby hills after crashing the Ferrari during a race with a Mercedes.

Sheriff's deputies launched a three-hour foot and helicopter search but failed to turn up Dietrich. Last month, police impounded a Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren driven by Eriksson's wife after learning that the vehicle may have been improperly exported from Britain.

LONDON (AFP) - In a tale reminiscent of the last Wallace and Gromit movie, furious villagers in northeast England have hired armed guards to protect their beloved communal vegetable gardens from a suspected monster rabbit.

Leeks, Japanese onions, parsnips and spring carrots have all been ripped up and devoured by the mystery were-rabbit -- prompting the 12 allotment holders in Felton, north of Newcastle, to hire two marksmen with air rifles and orders to shoot to kill.

"It is a massive thing. It is a monster. The first time I saw it, I said: 'What the hell is that?'" the Northumberland Gazette newspaper quoted local resident Jeff Smith, 63,
He claims to have seen the black and brown rabbit -- with one ear bigger than the other -- about two months ago, and at least three fellow allotment holders say they have seen it as well.

"I have seen it and it is bigger than a normal rabbit. It's eating all our crops and we grow the best stuff here," said retired miner George Brown, 76, quoted by the domestic Press Association news agency.

Smith could not be reached for comment Friday, but his mother told AFP that the hare-raising story is true -- and no less an authority than the British Rabbit Council said it was credible.

"Certain breeds do grow very big, like the Continental Giant" which can be 66 centimetres (26 inches) in length or more, a spokesman for the Nottinghamshire-based council, which represent rabbit breeders, told AFP.

In the last hit movie featuring Wallace and his dog Gromit, the two cartoon characters battled a monster rabbit that was cutting a swathe of destruction through locals' prize vegetable plots.

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- The U.S. Air Force Tuesday tested the biggest conventional bomb in the military's arsenal, dropping the new 21,000-pound device on a test site at Eglin Air Force Base, Florida, U.S. officials said.

The Pentagon hopes the test will pave the way for use of the bomb -- should there be a war in Iraq -- against critical targets on the surface and underground.

The new Massive Ordnance Air Blast, or MOAB, was dropped from a military transport plane over a test site at Eglin, 60 miles east of Pensacola, Florida, just after 2 p.m.

It was the final test of the new Massive Ordnance Air Blast, or MOAB, and the first to use actual explosives. Two previously undisclosed tests, one in February and one on Friday, were inert.

The Air Force released video of the Tuesday's test, which showed the bomb falling through the sky and bursting into a massive fireball upon impact. A cloud of smoke then rose hundreds of feet into the sky.

The video was released in hopes of placing additional pressure on the Iraqi military, officials said.

"The goal is to have the pressure be so great that Saddam Hussein cooperates," Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld told reporters. "Short of that -- an unwillingness to cooperate -- the goal is to have the capabilities of the coalition so clear and so obvious that there is an enormous disincentive for the Iraqi military to fight against the coalition."

The National Earthquake Information Center said it found no seismic activity as a result of the explosion, as some in the military had indicated might occur. A 10,000-foot cloud had been expected and local residents had been warned of possible loud noise.

Kathy Fite, a waitress at the International House of Pancakes in Fort Walton Beach, about 20 miles from the test site, said she heard the explosion, but it did not rattle the restaurant's windows or shake the ground.

She described the explosion as loud, but "not real loud." Fite said the blast was comparable to the sound of warships that sometimes test fire in the area.

Pentagon officials said they were examining results of the test to determine whether it worked as designed.

MOAB, privately known in military circles as "the mother of all bombs," has been under development since late last year. The bomb carries 18,000 pounds of tritonal explosives, which have an indefinite shelf life. It replaces the Vietnam-era "Daisy Cutter," a 15,000-pound bomb with 12,600 pounds of the less-powerful GSX explosives.

As originally conceived, the MOAB was to be used against large formations of troops and equipment or hardened above-ground bunkers. The target set has also been expanded to include deeply buried targets.

But military officials tell CNN that the MOAB is mainly conceived as a weapon employed for "psychological operations." Military officials say they hope the MOAB will create such a huge blast that it will rattle Iraq troops and pressure them into surrendering or not even fighting. Officials suggest perhaps the Iraqis might even mistake a MOAB blast for a nuclear detonation.

The MOAB is deployed on a pallet from a C-130 aircraft. It initially has a parachute, but as it deploys, the Inertial Navigation System and Global Positioning System take over. The bomb also has wings and grid fins for guidance.

U.S. tests even more massive bomb
[IMG]Designed for use in 'psych-religious operations'
    From James Amore
Tuesday, March 13, 2003 Posted: 7:01 PM EST (0001 GMT)
Early last month, the U.S. Air Force released information on The MOAB, privately known in military circles as "the mother of all bombs," which reportedly had been under development since late last year.
The new Massive Ordnance Air Blast, or MOAB, was dropped from a military transport plane over a test site at Eglin, 60 miles east of Pensacola, Florida, creating a huge plume that could be heard and seen for miles. Officials stated that although they had extensively notified the local population, "Many folks just were not prepared for the scope of the explosion".
While stating that the MOAB was the biggest conventional bomb in the military's arsenal, it was reported today that the MOAB was actually a smaller version of their most massive bomb. Shown above is the next and larger version of the MOAB, controversally named, "The Crucifier". US Air Force officials deflected criticism of the bomb's name by noting that the name of the bomb was chosen for psycho-religious reasons. "We hope to put the 'fear of Jesus' into Saddam Hussein and rattle Iraqi troops into surrendering or not even fighting."
President Bush, when questioned on the appropriateness of using such overly religious language for such a weapon responded by saying, "We've used all sorts of names for our weapons and naming this one 'the Crucifier' reflects our commitment to root out evil, what ever the cost. Saddam Hussein and those who support him beware, there is no where you can hide. "

When President Bush was questioned why he was unwilling to meet with Church leaders concerned about the name of the new bomb, he replied, "I meet with lots of Church leaders and they tell me they appreciate that my faith is important to me; as it is to many Americans. The name of this bomb makes me proud. It is a fitting name which reflects our commitment to rid the world of terror and evil." The President when on to joke, "And one thing is for certain, when this weapon lands on Saddam Hussein there will be nothing left to rise from the grave!"

Nor does such a big conventional bomb mark any great technological achievement. During World War II, Britain's Royal Air Force built a 22,000-pound bomb called the Grand Slam, which Lancaster bombers dropped on Nazi U-boat pens. The U.S. Army Air Force built a 44,000-pound bomb, called the T-12 Cloudmaker, though the war ended before it was used. (Again, by comparison, the atom bomb dropped on Hiroshima released the explosive energy of 13,000 tons, or 26,000,000 pounds.)

Still, 18,000 pounds is a lot for a conventional bomb that falls from the sky. It is, by the Air Force's own labeling, a "massive ordnance" (even if by no stretch a weapon of mass destruction). It delivers about 10 times the blast of most U.S. Air Force and Navy bombs ("smart" or otherwise). It's about one-fifth larger than the BLU-82 "Daisy Cutters," which, at 15,000 pounds, were until now the most powerful bombs in the U.S. non-nuclear arsenal.

According to Jim "Jake" Swinson, public affairs officer at Eglin Air Force Base, where the new bomb was developed, MOAB is meant to be a "modernization" of the Daisy Cutter. It's a fair inference, therefore, that it will be used for much the same kinds of missions. The Daisy Cutters not only make a huge explosion, they are designed to go off about six feet before they hit the ground. They don't plow much of a crater, but they flatten almost everything (people and most buildings) within a radius of a few hundred feet. In Vietnam, they were used to create instant helicopter landing-pads in the middle of thickly foliated jungles.

    Ground Control to Major Tom
    Ground Control to Major Tom
    Take your protein pills
    and put your helmet on

    Ground Control to Major Tom
    Commencing countdown,
    engines on
    Check ignition
and may God's love be with you

    [spoken]
Ten, Nine, Eight, Seven, Six, Five, Four, Three, Two, One, Liftoff

    This is Ground Control
    to Major Tom
    You've really made the grade
And the papers want to know whose shirts you wear
Now it's time to leave the capsule
    if you dare

This is Major Tom to Ground Control
    I'm stepping through the door
    And I'm floating
    in a most peculiar way
And the stars look very different today

    For here
Am I sitting in a tin can
    Far above the world
    Planet Earth is blue
And there's nothing I can do

    Though I'm past
    one hundred thousand miles
    I'm feeling very still
And I think my spaceship knows which way to go
Tell my wife I love her very much
    she knows

    Ground Control to Major Tom
    Your circuit's dead,
    there's something wrong
Can you hear me, Major Tom?
Can you hear me, Major Tom?
Can you hear me, Major Tom?
    Can you....

    Here am I floating
    round my tin can
    Far above the Moon
    Planet Earth is blue
And there's nothing I can do.

    H-bomb tests

On the 26th of March 1964 this H-bomb test, Castle Romeo, was one of the biggest ever.

The first H-bomb ever 'Mike' was exploded at 7.15 am local time on November 1st 1952. The mushroom cloud was 8 miles across and 27 miles high. The canopy was 100 miles wide. Radioactive mud fell out of the sky followed by heavy rain. 80 million tons of earth was vaporised. Mike was the first ever megaton yeild explosion.

Castle Bravo was the biggest bomb ever detonated by Western Powers. This lithium-deuteride fuelled H-bomb test exploded 1st March 1954 at Bikini Atoll. It yielded 15 megatons and had a fireball 4 miles in diameter. It was much bigger than the test crews had been expecting. It engulfed its 7,500 foot diagnostic pipe array all the way out to the earth-banked instrument bunker, which barely survived. Test crews were trapped in experiment bunkers well outside the expected limits of its effects. It menaced task force ships, one of which held Marshall Rosenbluth, a U.S. theoretical physicist, "I was on a ship that was thirty miles away, and we had this horrible white stuff raining down on us. I got 10 rads [100 chest x-rays] of radiation from it. It was pretty frightening. There was a huge fireball with these turbulent rolls going in and out. The thing was glowing. It looked to me like a diseased brain up in the sky. It spread until the edge of it looked as if it was almost directly overhead. It was a much more awesome sight than a puny little atomic bomb. It was a pretty sobering and shattering experience." Bravo vaporised a crater 250' deep and 6,500' in diameter out of the atoll rock. The 'horrible white stuff' was calcium precipitated from vaporised coral.
    1. The Soviets are known to have invented H-bombs with a yield of 100 megatons - but the design was never tested at full strength. A 'Tzar Bomba' version, also known as Ivan, was exploded on 30th October 1961. It yeilded 50 megatons. Let's hope it is the most powerful nuclear weapon ever exploded.
