    Watchmen: The Ultimate Cut
There is no reason to watch any other version. Any closer to the original material and you may as well be watching the motion comic. It's nearly perfect. It brought back that old feeling I had when I first read the book- the atmosphere, the characters, everything. It's amazing.

How much did they add to the movie.

Underlined is the only part I agree with. I felt that they seriously screwed up the atmosphere and tone of the movie (it was like a children's cartoon, not the bleak, grim tale that the comic is), took out way too much subtext, and so many of the details that made it so life-like.

Also, somehow they made the Comedian the most likable character.

The Motion Comic is the only version worth anyone's time, the only reason I'm not pissed I bought this, and still lacking the vital and rich written excerpts.

Better question would be how much the removed from the book ;)

Some people weren't touched by this movie, but I felt it was close enough (and certainly much closer to any adaptation than Hollywood is accustomed to making of anything) to still convey the points and atmosphere of the book. The theatrical cut was fun to watch in theaters, but seemed so hollow compared to this... I don't get why anyone would bother with it. It's almost insulting. The Director's Cut was closer, but the Ultimate Cut is where it's at, in my opinion. I really don't think they could have physically done any more within the confines of film without doing a page-by-page recreation and pausing the film for readings and seminars on the text. You may as well read the book if that's what you're looking for.

Also, I don't get how you think the comedian was the most likeable character. The only time I ever even found him sympathetic was at the beginning when he's getting his ass kicked. Rorschach always idolized him and Sally always forgave him and he did in fact break down to Moloch, so I don't know how they could have cut these things out to make him more disgusting... I thought he was pretty fucking heinous, myself. He was the worst kind of "hero" in my opinion.

I'm not saying it's a perfect movie. There were times when I wanted to kick Malin Akerman in the head for her clumsy delivery, and I'll never understand why John was going back to get HIS watch instead of Janie's (because that matters... it really does), but as for things like the city not being littered with bodies and blood and the missing giant squid, I can do without them. The squid was the only thing that made me cock my head when I was reading the book, and though it was a huge bone of contention amongst purists, I'm totally okay with the alternative.

Of course this is all just my opinion. For some people, there is no such thing as "close enough," especially when it comes to this particular fandom, and I understand, even though I don't agree.

Just the movie itself is 3 and half hours long. It's basically the Director's Cut with the Black Freighter edited into it. I was very happy with the added footage and thought it filled in a lot of gaps the theatrical version left in the atmosphere and the development of the characters, and I really liked the Black Freighter parts. I was weary of watching this version at first because of this, but it never took me out of the movie, especially when it was always associated with the Bernies, who were put back in the movie and made the human impact of the destruction of NYC a little more real...

Aside from that is an obscene amount of special features (some on the movie disc and some on their own disc), which is what I live for, and the motion comic comes on its own disc. There was a digital download disc, but by the time I got it, it had expired (which is pretty dumb, but whatever).

I didn't say sympathetic, I said likable. (But I suppose he wasn't the most likable)
    Scenes like this:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y__N-JEXvyc"]YouTube - Watchmen - Nightowl remembers The Comedian

They make the protest crowd seem like a bunch of hedonistic hoodlums, and it seems more to emphasize Dan's feelings on it more than how fucked up it all is; the whole American dream part is so cheesily delivered by Dan, and then the Comedian's reply is not at all filmed objectively.

And they made Dan so much more impotent and pussy than he is in the novel. He's suppossed to be your average cooled down, middle-aged man; not the utter wimp he's portrayed as, even in costume, I might add (that could be the actor's fault as much as Snyder's though)
The Dark Knight was close enough, even though they royally screwed up Harvey Dent and Two-Face, and made him look more cartoonish than the 90s children's cartoon.
V for Vendetta was close enough even though they turned V into a hero and took out any controversy because it was awesome in it's own way.

Watchmen was exactly what every fan feared. The same story with all thought, emotion, subtext, and meaning sucked out of it. An action blockbuster like Speed or Die Hard, but with some more serious themes.

    You saw the movie first?
I haven't watched the original version yet. I really want to see how they justified the theater ending, and I think if I saw it, it might help me figure out how Zack Snyder fucked it up so bad.

    The Thereafter.
Terrible film. Terrible acting (especially the children). Terrible story. Pointless ending. And half the movie was in French. Jeez.

Gone in Sixty Seconds -- the girl never saw it.

I can't believe those fuckers at IMDB gave it a 6/10

The climax is 20 minutes long, and one of the reviewers said the action never picks up!!
