I've been enjoying the conversation but I'm with orison319 on this one. When one is 17 or 18 and you're thrown into that kind of a hell, where you see your friends in pieces on the ground moaning and the person who did it was 6 or 7. If someone tells you the only way out is to do what your told, it's pretty hard not to do what your told.
So until you faced it yourself, I'd save my judgments for the Politicians and Generals and leave the teenagers thrown into the maw of Hell that was Vietnam alone.

Kind of a bad joke I guess, I know how dangerous being a door gunner was in Vietnam, my friend with the short arm (he took a shot in the arm and lost about 5' of bone) told me that the first thing the Viet Cong would do is try and take out the door gunner so the helicopter was defenseless so door gunners didn't usually live very long. Thus I was in my own way kind of saying, I'm glad you made it back, when the odds were stacked against you.

Do you need a picture of me or what ? 5min your ass we ruled. Do your job well and you go home. And my arms are just fine thank you. 5mins. Where were you ? We were in the air all the time. By your logic I was repeatadly killed. But yet here I am. Geeez. Why would one arm be shorter than the other ? I used a 50cal machine gun that took both hands to hold on to.
    Peace

Statistical data was obtained from analysis of the Combat Area Casualty File of 11/93 (CACF1193), and The Adjutant General's file of 1981
    ***********************
Some of these myths, because they have been repeated so many times, and have been showcased in some deplorable books and movies about the war, have taken on the status of "fact" in the minds of an alarming number of people. While some of these myths can be exposed as apocryphal tales by examining the statistics compiled during and after the war by independent sources, others are impossible to disprove (You can not "prove" a negative hypothesis. All that one can do is examine the evidence and determine if there is any substance to the allegations.

The Tet Offensive Was a Communist Victory > Only In The Minds of the media
Most Men Who Served Were Drafted > Most Men Who Served (75%) Were Volunteers
Draft Dodgers Protested Against The War > They Protested Over The Fact They Had To Serve
Fraggings Were Common In Vietnam > In fact they were rare
Prisoners Were Hurled From Helicopters > From the archives of the Beverly Hills National Guard
American Atrocities Were Widespread > In fact, only two can be documented
Drug use was rampant > Drug use is rampant in Hollywood( movies make it look a lot worse than it was)
Body Counts Were Falsified > If anything, we wildly underestimated NVA dead
The Communists Still Hold POWs > There is no credible evidence to support this belief

I dig up this page, because I too am offended by the lack of real knowledge about the war. I would add that I was never spit on or called hurtful names when returned to the world. I would say that whole story is overdone- while treatment may have been indifferent , I dont believe that many were treated with such disrespect- -Especially by the young people, hippies, yippies,& compassionate folks everywhere. Then as today- there was a hate the war not the warrior attitude- especially by the early 70,s

    myhumbleopinion,
    JJack

That's why I've always liked face to face. Then you can see the twinkle in the eye when someone’s pulling your leg.

It's really no problem, it's not the first time I’ve been misread and with my sense of humor it more than likely won't be the last.

I probably should use these things more often.

Thanx, although I disagree with the draft dodger part, that may have been the reason for some but most of the people I talked with at the time were truly against the war and not just because they would have to go fight it. Both Americans and Vietnamese were dying and no one could give a good reason why anyone had to die? So doctors and lawyers and housewives as well as Hippies and draft dodgers were in the streets protesting the war.

i think folks need to go back and reread the thread.
nowhere in this thread was i attacking or insulting except in rebuttal to silverhippycrites attacks and insults..
as far as the question,,it was simply carrying on with the theme of this whole thread.. the stereotypical assumptions of what that era was...
it would be a whole nother issue if i was someone like soaring eagle and actually was serious, however i would assume anyone with a ounce of comprehension skills would understand after reading the rest of the thread what context it was in..
    i guess not...

if it offended oh fucking well..
    i make no apologies..

another thing about that era,,as has already been stated, and agreed upon by at least 2 from that era.. multitudes of that generation claim to have been hippies,or at woodstock,or combat veterans when they were not.. for folks that were not there,we are expected to just believe all these millions were, just because they say they were.

i for one take silverhypicrites claims with a grain of salt.. he also claims to be a hippy and look at his actions..

now jungle jack on the other hand didnt even dignify the question with a reply..
now he i believe truly was a combat veteran,to him id like to say it was just a joke in poor taste..also id like to thank him for his service..

silverhippycrite on the other hand,as far as i know is just talking out his ass so he can once again convince himself hes above people like me..
    im not buyin..

the old saying "me thinks you protest to much" rings through this entire thread..

I know the whole thread turned into a flame.. Thats not your intention.. most of the time..

I dont let it bother me brother.
But you know as well thats basically the final insult..
As for the vietnam conflict, economically its no different than our current state of affairs in the world..
But then this goes without saying..
Fuck the war talk.... geeze, I really do sometimes hate myself for being involved in the gulf.. Wtf... but I try like hell not to let it be controlling me now Im not there....
Now if silver focused his energy on the Goverment we all serve instead of the ppl trying to modivate the sheeple., and give the facts a little deeper than some ppl like to be cut....

Hed have less time on his hands to attack HHB....

But Im going say I dont know him (silver) I know the area he lives in..
Its bad.. I grew up there, and I work there.. Be very honest with you theres not much to it now there is no mills.. Smaller machined parts jobs but not huge steel... Hitting the age myself that I have uncertainy many miles from that area but with hope things will get better...
I dont say much here on the issues or some of the modivational projects I do work on myself. I gots a good job and Im not happy..But will see..

It why I left Pgh and live futher north. But my heart still belongs to the town... :cheers2:
besides the fact I really hate all the sports shit theres.

my sister and i both were born in thailand.. my father was career military serving in all 3 branches before he retired, navy, then finished the bulk of his active duty in the army, then when he retired from active duty after 22 years and 8 months of "faithful service" transfered into the air national guard where he remained till his health failed.

i dont take service to our country lightly,,,i was a military brat and i full well know the sacrifices a combat veteran made..
my son went in the military.

im a patriot and appreciate those that chose to wear the uniform of this great nation,i think you know that..

that being said,,at this point,i take anything silverhippycrite says with a grain of salt and really doubt half of what he claims is true, therefore being the question was addressed to him i have no guilt over it whatsoever..

but yeah enough of the war talk..

got shit to do around here anyway..
the sun is up,,and its good..:p

    have a great day!!!
    i know i will!!:)

Yeah, Im one of those that believe way to many people nowadays claim they were 1 of the 400-500 thousand that showed up in Bethel ,NY for 3 days
Its just silly to claim such a thing. If you were there>you were there
If you werent -you werent ** You didnt lose any hippie points:confused:
You,re allowed to miss a Hippie event- Hell, I was in NYC & didnt go.
    > next<
I read recently,(so this isnt mine)that 4 out of 5 vets who claim to have seen actually combat were behind a desk, or served in some other capacity. I guess the media,& Hollywood not only made it acceptable- they made it cool now to be a vet. I guarantee you it too wasnt cool in 1971.
I would have loved being behind a desk in fucking Germany or someplace- its silly to beef up your service record to sound like Rambo- whatever capacity you served in -you should be damn proud of.

So- thanks for the thanks Hillbilly- I would like to say "no problem , Id do it again"- but that would be an absolute lie

    Respect,
    JJack:hat:

This post is not intended for anyone in particular- just my obervations & feelings from being out in the world, not on this computer screen

anyway- thanks for your reply & explanation

That's the point. The non hippy folks were off at college getting degrees and preparing to ass rape the rest of us.

The hippy folks were playing ultimate frisby and talking with trees.
