But it's not annoying when people say the music of the 70s sucked? Why is rating decades of the past okay, but not rating today's music?
I know what you're saying zelliot. Music has focused much more on the producing of the song that they completely forget about the main ingredient; the lyrics. Lyrics say it all. It talks about what a person is feeling, what they're trying to get out; in other words, it was an escape to whatever it was on the artist's mind. But now, lyrics just deals with sex, booze, and partying and not what it used to stand for; peace, love, freedom, whatever it may be.
Because 60s and 70s tones suck and make me wanna throw up. Plus I used to listen to that music...I'm not basing my claims off of nothing. Also, I listed a few bands from the 70s that I do like...I didn't say all music from the 70s sucked.
You can't judge today's music as a whole by just looking at the mainstream charts. If you're not aware there's an insane amount of other music being made you're obviously missing out. Posting one other song from each other decade does say very little about music as a whole in that decade. And finally, you can't look at pop music lyrics like it were poetry. Actually, you can do all those things of course... But it doesn't give you much insight.
OK, so popular music today DOES suck, in my opinion, and is FAR worse by comparison against popular music from decades past. So rarely do we encounter anything new in music today. Speaking musically, not necessarily lyrically, anything on top 40s charts today is synthetic, and what it comes down to is what sells. True, it was about that before, but what sold was so much deeper, in so many ways. The Beatles used to top the charts. True, some of their earlier stuff is less than inspired, but I'd still prefer that over top 40 any day.
I'd like to be under the sea In an octopus' garden in the shade He'd let us in, knows where we've been In his octopus' garden in the shade Oh yes just current bands come up with shitty lyrics
Indeed, if you don't like a certain kind of music you go listen to another one. Only thing wrong with mainstream music (and perhaps other music as well) is that it doesn't meet YOUR expectations. Now, I think it's debatable who's problem that exactly is.
I don't like a lot of the music that is popular these days - I have not idea what is in the charts. But, there is a lot of music around now that it pretty damn good, they're just not the bands who get the attention from the media. And, I like it that way - I have no interest in a lot of the girl groups or boys sitting on stools, so I don't listen to them. But there is good music around. Some do have terrible lyrics, but there are songs that always have had terrible lyrics. There is one song, that has awful cheesy lyrics from the early 90s, but it's one of my favourite happy songs!

There's loads of excellent music produced these days. "Charts" are worse than useless at pointing you to the good stuff, and have been for at least a decade, ignore them. The internet is a far better tool to seek out new and quality music, in your preferred genre, that meets your tastes.
