One of my favorite Motown acts weren't typical of the breed - The Isley Brothers were an esthablished name before they joined the label, and were successful after they left it. And I think they employed a certain Jimi Hendrix in the backing band at one time.

The Motown house band was also integrated. They called the 3 man guitar section the Oreo Cookie Guitar section because there was a black man on each end and a white man in the middle.

Here are a couple of songs that I believe were the start of the hippie movement.
There are probably more than these: but these are the ones that I remember .

Omg ... we could go on and on with these great old songs. Myself, I was fanatically in love with Ricky Nelson when I was 12 years old ...

Did you see her in "Irina Palm"? She played a grandmotherly prostitute. Very well, too.

Far too young to remember that far back of course :) but an early example of Brit psychedelia/hippie [1967] that you dont seem to hear much nowadays - suprisingly in my view...it's weathered the years well.

I'm sure I read somewhere that the band hated this song, they were primarily a blues band and the record label made them record it in order to jump on the zeitgeist [so to speak...].
