It's a deterrant. Drunk Driving kills THOUSANDS of people every year. I fail to see how such a police activity that punishes these drivers for being so selfish is a bad thing. <--- someone who used to drink and drive often many years ago and is completely ashamed of himself for it.
See, I'm torn. I understand they may help save some lives... if there was some idiot that drank a case of beer and was gonna cause a crash I'm sure I'd be grateful for the check point... but at the same time I do think they are unconstitutional.
just like how all of a sudden police care that you actually buckle your seatbelt........ no, they just need another reason to pull you over..........
LoL... there were signs everywhere that didn't exist before saying "click it or ticket" and I've seen a million commercials for that lately.
That shit's fucking bogus. If I'm driving well enough that you can't tell, you shouldn't be able to stop me just to stop me. That's like stopping me to see if I have drugs on me when I'm clear eyed and coherent. Fuck them. I don't even drink and drive, at all, but it still pisses me off.
I think its bullshit too, if you can handle it, you can handle it, you should not be pulled over unless you are driving dangerously. that being said, the only time i went through one was in Santa Fe New mexico like 13 years ago, and I went through it once into town, again checking some hotels, and then once again to leave town the other direction,,,took over 2 hours to go through 3 times
There is most certainly an entrapment, privacy issue with these road blocks. I won't deny that. I know back home in Vermont, they were required by law to advertise a few days in advance that they were planning on setting up DUI check points.
As for madcrappie and pressed_rat's comments. Yes, the primary motivating factor in all of it is to make $$$. I'm not suggesting that they truly 'care'. However, if the occasionally check point does contribute to people being a little bit more responsible on the roads, then I'm all for it. The government might not 'care' about this, but I do.
Because it's ENTRAPMENT! Which is ILLEGAL. Sure...have some cops sitting in random spots along the road. If someone is driving erratically, THEN they have a reason to pull them over. Otherwise, it's REALLY not legal...technically...at least here in Michigan. <-------someone who has had family members die in drunk driving accidents...as well as several friends.
