Awww, that must've been very emotional for you. I'm actually about to that, myself, sometime soon.

Four years, and I'm just feeling like it's time for a change. It's hard to actually take the step and do it, though!

Totally. I encourage you to do whatever you feel you need to do. I had to do it. I think it was more of a statement for me than even getting them in the first place.

I feel extremly sad however, when I see others dreads. I really miss them...

I identify. Getting dreads for me was a bit of a statement, but now that I've moved to a place where EVERYONE has dreads, it's almost like I want to get rid of them to make a statement. It almost seems like a lot of people here feel it's cool to have them, and do it to fit in, which is the exact opposite of my reason for getting them in the first place. But besides that, it's just been so long, and I feel like it'd be nice to try a new hair style for a change.

do whatever feels right, man. don't look at either side. statement to keep, statement to cut; no one will feel as strongly either way... it's all irrelevant. in my heart dreads feel right. i don't care what i'll look like or what who will say whenever about whatever. "eww dreads are gross" kiss my ass! "wow ur dreads are sweet" kiss my ass! go with what's in your heart, don't let the outside world influence you.

Comin along! How long has it been since you brushed? Are you going to help them along? Or just let them grow? Either way, I'm sure they'll be really nice once they're fully formed :)

like someone else said, you shouldnt let any outside force cause you to cut your dreads. it has been YOUR thing since the beginning of it, and it should be YOUR thing all the way to the end of it, if you CHOOSE for things to be that way.
if you´re ever uncomfotable about your dreads in any way (not talking phsyically here, although they definitely ARE sometimes), realize that it´s always THEIR problem, not yours. that´s something wrong with them, not you. for instance, if you feel like you cant get a job with dreads, that´s a problem of the people that arent hiring you. that´s their narrow mindedness and ignorance.
unfortunately, other people´s "problems" can still affect us, but to start to remedy the situation, you need to change how you think about it.

also, if you feel the need to cut your dreads off just because too many other people have them (no matter their reasons), it would seem that your reason for having them is for other people, not yourself.

of course i´ve thought about cutting them off (never seriously, though) but it always came down to the question of why i had them in the first place. i´ve realized that it´s not even really up to me whether or not they´re cut or they stay. they just ARE and will BE until something *happens* that will require them to be cut off. it wont be my choice.

so ask yourself, why do you have them in the first place?

Of course I'd never cut them off, because of outside influences. The main reason I've been thinking about it (emphasis on "thinking") is just because it's been so long, and I want a change. I want to feel undreaded hair again.

But ultimately, I'm choosing to wait. The time will come when I'm definetly ready to do it.
