My apoligies for not being a stereotypical hippie and for not just accepting something that is considered by self-proclaimed hippies around the world to be good music.
You just don't understand Morrison's writing. It's pretty obvious if you think you can write better which you can't. It doesn't take a genius to figure that out. I've been listening to The Doors since I was ten and I take their music very seriously. The doors mean more than just music to me.
uh im not the biggest fan of the doors but thats just stupid. most people that listen to em are older anyways haha
i disagree with parts of what your saying. the doors became over popular because jim was "a babe". i hate hearing kids in my school say "OMG I LIKE LOOOOVE THE DOORS SOOOO MUCH!" but when you ask them to name the members of the band they always say "jim morrison...ummm...im not sure". now THAT is irritating. but back onto what i was saying i agree with many people saying that jim couldnt handle the spotlight and all the attention he was getting.
I obviously can write better than Jim... I'm sure you could too, its not all that hard. And what the hell is there to figure out?
probe it.... probe you can be better than him...... not saying hes the bes, but.... dont think he´s that bad...
man... jimbo gets too much attention. manzarek is a freakin awesome keyboardist... think about it... they did not have a bass player. so what sounds like bass is really comin from ray's rhodes. and i cant say enough about krieger's style... he started as a classical guitar player, y'know, flamenco... anyway, to each his own
I agree with Newo... as far as I'm concerned, The Doors were one of the greatest bands ever. Why? Excellent songs! Interesting, catchy, extremely enjoyable to listen to. Songs you can play again and again and still enjoy. Sure, I personally don't think all that much of Jim's writing, but really, to me, that has nothing to do with whether a song's great or not. I can find songs that will be remembered for decades to come on every studio album from when Jim was alive. That is the sign of a great band, to me. As for musicianship, I find Ray Manzarek a very talented keyboardist and Robbie Krieger more than proficient on guitar (however I must admit I don't think much of John Densmore's drumming). I also love Jim Morrison's deep voice. It doesn't matter to me whether they're perfect at their instruments or not. I consider Led Zeppelin to be the most talented group of musicians ever, but I still think The Doors one of the best bands ever (along with Led Zep) As for the "growing out of it" part - the reason my love for The Doors waned was because I was obsessed with them, and I mean OBSESSED, at the age of 19-20. An obsession like that couldn't get any deeper than it was... it had to burn out, and it did by the time I turned 22. I found The Doors' aura was the thing I got obsessed with, particularly the Jim Morrison thing. That's the thing you grow out of - when you realise that he was a human being, and a particularly flawed and damaged one at that... he had many deep-seated problems that he chose to deal with by drinking himself to death.
Nsync is not within a thousand miles of the doors, The Doors are an incredible band and an incredible cultural force as well
i guess. they did kinda suck. they remind me of fun times i used to have though. i cant hate them.... EVER... sorry
"Light my Fire"... I am a HUGE doors fan (or, Jim morrison fan, as someone else put it), and i HATE THAT SONG! Morrison didn't even write the "catchy" parts of that song. And if that is your favorite Doors song, you know nothing about the doors and you need to go out and buy something other than the greatest hits. Personally, I lilke Morrison's poems best. Laugh all you want. And, how can you not like songs like "When the Musics Over"...my boyfriend LOATHES the doors, and even he thinks that song is well written. Come on! They have a few songs that arent completely thoughtless lyrically. I really don't think Jim Morrison took the band seriously to begin with. He had ideas of his own. His heros were writers and poets. AND, I agree that Ray Manzarek was/is a great musician. The times that Morrison would be too drunk/stoned to perform, Ray would take over for him, multi-task. If not for Ray, there would be no Doors. "The doors were the n sync of their time"....haha! OUCH!
*sigh* people automatically assume that since I can't stand The Doors, they think all I've heard are their greatest hits. Last summer (some of you may remember!), I was a huge Doors freak. Not only have I heard every single piece of anything they recorded in a studio that's been released, but I have over 200 live Doors burned on various cds. I'm sure I've heard more Doors than most of you, if not all. And I do believe I stated before that I think Ray and Robby were/are excellent musicians. Its not their fault they were stuck behind one of the worst frontmen in music history.
Sorry, You and I cannot write better than Jim Morrison. I have a notebook of poetry that I think is really good, but nowhere near Morrison. He was a poet of the highest caliber and it hurts me when you say that he couldn't write, but the fact that you compared them to N'sync really blows my mind. It makes me wonder if your mind is functioning correctly.
I wasn't talking to anyone in particular when I made my statement about "the greatest hits." I could only hope that you were forming opinions about the Doors after hearing more than the hits. And, it's cool that you think Morrison blows creatively. I don't knock people's musical taste, it's whatever works for you. For me, personally, the Doors work for me. They aren't my favorite band, but they're in my top 10 at least. And, I'm sure I've heard just as much as you!!!! ha! p.s...I think it kind of is their fault that ray and robby were stuck behind "the worst frontman in music history". If they viewed him that way, why form a band with him period? I'm sure Ray saw SOMETHING in Jim Morrison that he found appealing.
hey mike, man... you kinda remind me of mccauly (how the fuck do you spell it?) caulkin... yeah, i totally fucked up his name, but you get who im talkin about... i just noticed that... and thats a cool picture of the 'bousche'
That's rather sad that you can admit that... In the beginning, they all thought they had something... but by the time 1969 came around, Jim had pretty much given up on the band and never really was serious about it again. (The majority of L.A. Woman and Morrison Hotel were not written by him.... hmm, coincidence that those are my two favorite Doors albums? )
those are good doors albums... just forget about their name and everything surrounding them... ya gotta at least like em a little... i mean, to hell with 'break on thrugh' and 'light my fire'... listen to runnin blue or somthin man... peace out bro
