Epstein files: Congress votes to send bill to Trump

    excerpt:

Survivors of Epstein’s abuse also spoke at the news conference, urging lawmakers to release the files and pushing Trump to do the same.

Epstein survivor Annie Farmer said that keeping the files under wraps amounted to “institutional betrayal”.

“Because these crimes were not properly investigated, so many more girls and women were harmed,” Ms Farmer said.

Trump's list of who to spend tariff money (that he took from the American people) continues to grow.

    A partial list:

$12 billion bailout to American farmers he injured with his tariffs.

paying off some of the national debt

    child care subsidies

    $2,000 checks to Americans

paying for tax cuts (by giving back some of the tariff money which is a tax on Americans)

    elimination of income tax

    https://www.politico.com/news/magazine/2025/12/13/trump-europe-embassy-parties-gloom-00689149

    excerpt:

"And what works isn’t liberty and promoting democracy but cozying up to autocrats and refraining from criticizing the authoritarianism of the members of the group once frequently dubbed the “axis of autocracy” — China, Russia, Iran or North Korea. And rejecting any silly old-fashioned interventionist notions about cajoling countries to adopt “democratic or other social change that differs widely from their traditions and histories.” (Just don’t ask why that approach doesn’t extend to Venezuela’s Nicolás Maduro.)"

Border Patrol traditionally has been used to patrol the geographic border of the U.S. with other countries.

Trump morphed it into a raid machine to go into inner city areas and public venues such as Home Depot, an activity for which it has little training and experience. It also has little history of how the general public would react to it being used in such an unorthodox manner.

Speaker Johnson is scrambling to slap some sort of new healthcare plan together after the Senate wasn't able to agree to stop ACA subsidies from expiring at the end of December 2025.

Many will see their insurance costs rise significantly in 2026, the year of midterm elections.

Brooks and Capehart on Trump's recent series of setbacks

    excerpt:

    "Jonathan Capehart:

No, it's not going to happen.

And I say that because I'm looking at the calendar. The House has four legislative days before they adjourn on December 18. The Senate has five legislative days before they adjourn on December 19. The subsidies end on December 31. You know how many days it took to get the Affordable Care Act from introduction to passage? Four hundred and twenty-seven days.

You cannot do this kind of policymaking in four or five legislative days. You just can't."

Brooks and Capehart on Trump's recent series of setbacks

    excerpt:

    "Amna Nawaz:

I want to take a step back and look at some of the bigger trends we saw this week, because there's the president's frustration over the Indiana map. We saw a grand jury again refuse to indict Letitia James. We know the Department of Justice is facing a deadline to release the Epstein files.

We're seeing bipartisan concern over the president's alleged drug boat strikes in the Caribbean. So there's mounting frustration on a number of fronts. At the same time, we're seeing a ramping up of the president's overtly racist rhetoric.

That affordability speech in Pennsylvania just devolved into an anti-immigrant, racist rant. David, are those things related?

    David Brooks:

Unclear. It could be just he's getting crankier and older."

Trump administration releases Garcia from detention after being ordered by a judge.

Kilmar Abrego Garcia released from immigration detention after judge's order

    excerpt:

In her 31-page order, the judge wrote that immigration detention cannot be used for punishment or go on indefinitely.

She said the first three African countries had never been "viable options", while Costa Rica "had never wavered in its commitment to receive Abrego Garcia, just as Abrego Garcia never wavered in his commitment to resettle there".

"Whatever purpose was behind his detention, it was not for the 'basic purpose' of timely third-country removal," she wrote.

Trump pardons Tina Peters, even though he already issued a blanket pardon for anyone like Tina Peters involved in trying to overthrow the 2020 election for him.

It won't undo her state-level conviction.

It will prevent her from being prosecuted at the federal level for the same type of crimes.

Trump has already issued a very general preemptive pardon to anyone involved in trying to overthrow the 2020 presidential election. Unwittingly, that includes Trump's enemies who he accuses of trying to overthrow the 2020 election for Biden.

Trump pardons jailed ex-Colorado election official Tina Peters, but she was charged in state court

    excerpt:

"President Trump said Thursday evening he is granting a pardon to Tina Peters, a former Colorado county clerk who is serving a nine-year state sentence for allowing unauthorized access to voting machines — even though the president's pardon power is widely understood to only apply to federal crimes."

Colorado rejects Trump's 'pardon' of Tina Peters.

    https://www.nytimes.com/2025/12/13/us/politics/trump-tina-peters.html

    excerpt:

Legal scholars and Colorado officials were incredulous. They said the notion that the president could intervene in state courts clashed with the plain language of the Constitution, as well as its fundamental principles of federalism and states’ rights.

“This is so far beyond the pale,” Mr. Weiser, the attorney general, said. “No one has thought to do this because it is so clearly against our constitutional system of government.”

Trump Official Forced to Clarify Exactly How Many Somalis Are Garbage
Donald Trump’s White House has launched a particularly racist attack on the Somali American community.

Trump Official Forced to Clarify Exactly How Many Somalis Are Garbage | The New Republic

    excerpt:

"The Trump administration is taking aim at the Somali American community in Minnesota with an immigration crackdown, punctuated by President Trump on Tuesday calling Representative Ilhan Omar, a Somali American herself, “garbage,” along with the rest of her community.

Since then, Trump’s staff have been defending his racism. Department of Homeland Security spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin was asked by CNN’s John Berman Wednesday exactly how much of the Somali American community in Minnesota, an estimated 40,000 of whom were born in Somalia, could be considered garbage. Her response was a word salad nowhere near a condemnation.

“John, we’re really looking at the data, the analyses here particularly out of Minneapolis, and other parts of the country where we’re seeing Somalia, there’s widespread fraud, particularly marriage fraud when it comes to immigration, we’re looking at criminality here,” McLaughlin said. Berman then repeated his question.

“My question is, all of them? The president says he doesn’t want them here. He called them ‘garbage.’ Do you consider that to be all of the 40,000 people born in Somalia now living in Minnesota?” Berman asked.

“John, this is not about politics, this is about public safety,” McLaughlin replied, referencing last week’s shooting of two National Guard members, allegedly by an Afghan national, in Washington, D.C."

Trump invokes executive privilege to stop release of details related to lawsuit against him by police officers.

    https://www.politico.com/news/2025/12/03/trump-executive-privilege-jan-6-lawsuit-00676383

    excerpt:

"President Donald Trump has asserted executive privilege to prevent courtroom adversaries from accessing evidence in a long-running lawsuit that accuses him of stoking violence at the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021.

The Justice Department disclosed Trump’s secrecy claim Wednesday in a hearing related to that five-year-old lawsuit, brought by police officers injured while attempting to repel the violent mob that day. The officers say Trump’s incendiary remarks to a crowd of supporters — and his direction that they march on the Capitol — fueled the riot that nearly derailed the transfer of power from Trump to Joe Biden and left 140 officers injured."
