The U.S. farmers were getting a below-market price by selling to countries like Brazil and other countries instead of China and losing money because of it, which Trump tried to remedy by giving U.S. taxpayer money to U.S. farmers, some of it direct welfare checks to farmers.

It's effectively Trump subsidizing other countries like Brazil and also subsidizing the U.S. farmers with taxpayer money.

Yet Trump said at his rallies, even in 2024, that his tariffs were collecting hundreds of billions of dollars from other countries (to the cheers of his rally-goers).
