Americans endured the Great Depression in the 1930's that presented challenges much worse than the current economic climate while battling against fascism's threat to democracy, the fascism that a significant fraction of the populace now embraces or excuses.

They also endured the Vietnam War era, Watergate, 9/11, and the Great Recession without going fascist until Trump arrived on the political scene.

Economic challenges and threats to democracy aren't an excuse to forego democracy.
