Trump and the GOP still haven't come to grips with the reality of changing demographics in states like AZ, TX, and GA. Trump said in January 2021 that he thought he won GA by as much as 500,000 votes. Trump proclaimed proudly to Baier during a Fox interview in June 2023 that he won the 2020 election. Instead of adjusting their stance to accommodate the demographic changes, their approach is to selectively squelch the demographic groups they don't like with tactics such as voter suppression and overthrowing elections. What started out as a politically disjunctive environment early in Trump's presidency degraded into a psychosis at the end, and one that continues into the 2024 election season.
Over six years later, members of the GOP are at each other's throats in the House. McCarthy is desperately trying to throw dog bones to people like Boebert and Greene to appease them. McCarthy's speaker position itself was delayed for weeks due to the infighting among the fringe members who wanted favors from him before voting him to be speaker. Boebert and Greene (the two who heckled Biden at the SOTU as he talked about his deceased son) don't even get along anymore and were accusing each other on the House floor of stealing the other's idea to impeach Biden.
That prospect was postulated in January 2017. Tucker Carlson was the culmination of it. He and Fox were destined to implode after telling one lie after another while apparently not appreciating the legal and financial ramifications of it.
Similar to Fox and Carlson who were eventually reigned in by the civil docket, Trump hasn't appreciated the consequences of his lies and behavior but is starting to feel them in the criminal docket.

While taking a pragmatic and financial punch in the face from Trump, farmers can have solace in the ideological reverie of knowing that Trump and DeSantis are bashing groups they scorn, like people from China and Mexico (the two countries from which Trump and his daughter import their clothing to sell at Macy's, imports that Trump made exempt from his tariff wars).
Harlow's research documented the competing needs of monkeys. In the current political world, it's the ideological needs (immigrant bashing) vs. pragmatic ones (financial survival). The ideological needs seem very high in the current political environment. Some people seemed to have been conditioned to be willing to give up their livelihood (milk) and even their life in the name of mentally comforting ideology of Trump and DeSantis (terrycloth). The 2016 presidential election season had some meaningful discourse within the GOP that was based on objective facts. For the 2024 election, it has descended into apocalyptic rants by Trump who claims he is the last chance to protect America from the evil world. The black-and-white campaign video showing Trump walking down empty hallways by himself like a crazed person looking to vanquish all the groups he thinks wronged him is symbolic of the mindset of the Trump-driven GOP 2024 election.
