For Trump’s G.O.P., Crossing Lines Has Few Consequences

    excerpt:

"Last month, Representative Madison Cawthorn, Republican of North Carolina, angered fellow Republicans by saying lawmakers he “looked up to” had invited him to parties involving sex and cocaine. The allegations drew condemnation from Mr. McCarthy, who told Republican lawmakers that Mr. Cawthorn had later admitted they were untrue, though the House leader stopped short of punishing him.

Mr. Cawthorn’s troubles seemed to get worse on Friday when Politico published photos of him in women’s lingerie, undercutting the image he presents of himself as a social conservative. Hardly chastened, Mr. Cawthorn responded on Twitter: “I guess the left thinks goofy vacation photos during a game on a cruise (taken waaay before I ran for Congress) is going to somehow hurt me? They’re running out of things to throw at me.”"

Who told Trump to tell his supporters to march to the Capitol?

The 'Save America' rally at the Ellipse didn't have a planned march to the Capitol.

Filing Provides New Details on Trump White House Planning for Jan. 6

    excerpt:

"WASHINGTON — Before the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol, Trump White House officials and members of the right-wing House Freedom Caucus strategized about a plan to direct thousands of angry marchers to the building, according to newly released testimony obtained by the House committee investigating the riot and former President Donald J. Trump’s efforts to overturn the election.

On a planning call that included Mark Meadows, the White House chief of staff; Rudolph W. Giuliani, Mr. Trump’s personal lawyer; Representative Jim Jordan, Republican of Ohio; and other Freedom Caucus members, the group discussed the idea of encouraging supporters to march to the Capitol, according to one witness’s account.

The idea was endorsed by Representative Scott Perry, Republican of Pennsylvania, who now leads the Freedom Caucus, according to testimony by Cassidy Hutchinson, an aide to Mr. Meadows, and no one on the call spoke out against the idea."

Warren: 'Kevin McCarthy is a liar and a traitor'

    excerpt:

"Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., had tough words on Sunday for House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, who is in hot water after the release of new audio of him suggesting that then-President Donald Trump should resign after the Jan. 6 attack at the Capitol.

"Kevin McCarthy is a liar and a traitor," Warren said on CNN's "State of the Union."

Warren continued: "This is outrageous. And that is really the illness that pervades the Republican leadership right now. They say one thing to the American public and something else in private.""

Now that he's running for Senate, Mark Brnovich changes his stance and now promotes the stolen election narrative.

    https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2022/04/23/mark-brnovich-election-senate/

    excerpt:

"As false claims of a stolen election took root in 2020, Arizona’s attorney general — a Republican — spoke out on national television. Donald Trump was projected to lose the swing state, he said on Nov. 11, and “no facts” suggested that would change.

This month Mark Brnovich called into a far-right podcast with a different message: His investigation into the vote was turning up “serious concerns.”

“It’s frustrating for all of us, because I think we all know what happened in 2020,” the attorney general told the host, former Trump adviser Stephen K. Bannon, without explaining what he meant. The podcast titled the segment “AZ AG On Interim Report On Stealing The 2020 Election.”"

Self-Described ‘Idiot Scaling the Wall’ Sentenced to 60 Days in Jan. 6 Case – NBC4 Washington

    excerpt:

"A U.S. Capitol riot defendant who described himself as "one of those idiots scaling the wall" on Jan. 6, 2021, was sentenced to 60 days in prison and three years of probation on Thursday.

Judge Carl Nichols sentenced Clifford Meteer, a Tennessee resident who stormed the Capitol in support of former President Donald Trump's efforts to overturn the 2020 presidential election, in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia.

Meteer's action were “about average” for a Jan. 6 defendant who has pleaded guilty to a parading charge but he is “relatively less remorseful” than the others who admitted to that misdemeanor offense, Nichols said."

Yet another self-inflicted punishment: Governor Abbott of Texas issuing extra, superfluous, border crossing inspections.

Apparently, Abbott has realized the damage he has done to the Texas economy and has changed his mind.

Election fraud claims dominate Georgia GOP governor’s debate

    excerpt:

"David Perdue made his intentions clear right out of the gate: In his opening statement in the Georgia GOP gubernatorial primary debate, he fixated on alleged election fraud.

Perdue, the former senator who is Donald Trump’s endorsed candidate, sparred with Gov. Brian Kemp on the issue for almost half of the one-hour GOP debate Sunday night, accusing the governor of trying to “bury the truth” about the 2020 election.

“First off, let me be very clear tonight,” Perdue began his opening statement, “the election in 2020 was rigged and stolen.” He went on to blame rising gas prices, inflation, illegal immigration and “the brink of war” on Kemp because the governor allowed “radical Democrats to steal our election.”"

Jurors reject array of defenses at Capitol riot trials

    excerpt:

"Thomas Webster, a 20-year veteran of the NYPD, has claimed he was acting in self-defense when he tackled a police officer who was trying to protect the Capitol from a mob on Jan. 6, 2021. Webster’s lawyer also has argued that he was exercising his First Amendment free speech rights when he shouted profanities at police that day."
