DC man who assaulted police during Capitol riot to plead guilty | wusa9.com

    excerpt:

"WASHINGTON — A D.C. man accused of repeatedly assaulting police with a pole on Jan. 6 will appear before a federal judge next week to enter a guilty plea.

Mark Ponder, of Northwest D.C., was indicted last March on 12 counts, including felony counts of civil disorder, obstruction of an official proceeding and assaulting police with a dangerous weapon. He rejected a plea offer from the government last July and was scheduled to begin a jury trial on April 25. Instead, according to a filing Thursday in D.C. District Court, Ponder will appear before U.S. District Judge Tanya S. Chutkan next Friday to plead guilty.

Ponder, one of only a small number of D.C. residents charged in connection with the Capitol riot, was arrested by police during the assault on the Capitol. The criminal complaint against him included multiple still images from bodyworn camera footage appearing to show Ponder swinging a large metal pole at an officer, who defended himself with a riot shield.

Officers eventually subdued Ponder and placed him under arrest, but he was released when the officers were called to return to the front line for crowd control. According to charging documents, Ponder then left the area for a short time before returning to the Capitol. He left for good once tear gas was deployed."

Florida man arrested for assaulting police officer in Jan. 6 riot | wtsp.com

    excerpt:

"WASHINGTON — Police arrested a Florida man accused of assaulting police officers and smashing through a window of the U.S. Capitol building during the Jan. 6, 2021, riot.

Steven Miles, 39, of Zephyrhills, was arrested Tuesday and charged with assaulting, resisting, or impeding officers, civil disorder, engaging in physical violence in a restricted building or grounds with a dangerous weapon, and other related offenses, according to the Department of Justice. He was released pending additional proceedings in Washington, D.C., it added.

According to the criminal complaint, Miles was among those who walked among the crowd to the Capitol objecting to Democratic President Joe Biden’s 2020 election victory over former Republican President Donald Trump. It was when he and other rioters ran up to law enforcement on the west side of the building and got into a confrontation, investigators say.

Miles allegedly shoved and attempted to punch police officers. Later, the complaint reads, Miles proceeded to smash a plank of wood into a window and climbed through into the building.

Phone records obtained by investigators traced a number to Miles, whose phone was connected to towers near the Capitol building, according to court documents.

A man with Miles that day, 33-year-old Matthew LeBrun of New Orleans, was also arrested Wednesday on similar charges, authorities said."

Trump’s former aide Stephen Miller grilled for 8 hours by House panel- live

    excerpt:

"Mr Miller, who became the latest Trump official to appear before the committee, had earlier resisted attempts including by suing to block the committee from forcing him to hand over documents and meet for an interview.

During the interview Mr Miller reportedly remained a difficult witness at times, a source said to CNN.

Meanwhile Pat A. Cipollone, the former White House counsel, and Patrick F. Philbin, who was his deputy, also met the panel separately on Thursday.

The two lawyers who served at the most senior level in the Trump White House met the committee on a semi-formal basis and may return for a formal deposition later, The New York Times reported.

Also on Thursday, the latest Capitol riot defendant to go on trial, Dustin Byron Thompson, blamed his actions on Donald Trump and his false claims about a stolen election, in a rare mention of the former president’s role during the ongoing hearings."

CNN Exclusive: 'We need ammo. We need fraud examples. We need it this weekend.' What the Meadows texts reveal about how two Trump congressional allies lobbied the White House to overturn the election. | CNN Politics

    excerpt:

"In a January 3 text to Meadows, Lee argued that Trump’s effort to have states send alternate slates of electors to Congress was not legitimate.

“I only know that this will end badly for the President unless we have the Constitution on our side,” Lee texted in a note to Meadows. “And unless these states submit new slates of Trump electors pursuant to state law, we do not,” Lee wrote to Meadows.

As CNN has previously reported, the plan to replace authentic electors with fake ones in a handful of swing states was orchestrated by allies of the former President and overseen by his then-attorney Giuliani."

Vance used to say he was a never-Trump who never liked Trump.

    Now he loves him.

Kentuckians are oblivious to facts. Alternative facts are what keeps them in the cult.

What is the Electoral Count Act and why does it present problems?

    excerpt:

"The act says, in long, convoluted language, the each state's slates or "all such returns and papers shall be opened by him" -- the vice president, or president of the Senate -- "in the presence of the two houses when met as aforesaid, and read by the tellers, and all such returns and papers shall thereupon be submitted to the judgment and decision…"

"Does this run-on sentence mean that Mike Pence shall open only the ballots that he wants? Or does he have to open if there's more than one slate from a state -- how does he know which ones to open?" Green posed. "None of those questions are answered by the face of the statute."

She added, "Those vagaries produced the mischief that we saw in the 2020 election," she added."

What is the Electoral Count Act and why does it present problems?

    excerpt:

"Some lawmakers are now coalescing around the idea of raising the threshold for objections beyond just a single senator and representative -- or to creating a list of valid ground for objecting results.

One proposal raises that at least one-third of each chamber would be needed for an objection to be heard -- or more than 30 senators and 140 House members.

"The idea is that the current process is too easy and that perhaps it should be made a little bit harder to object, so that there's more consensus required and a couple of people can't kind of gum up the works as easily," Green said.

Collins, who is leading discussions with a group of 16 senators to reform the law, said she's hopeful it can be done on an "overwhelming" bipartisan basis."
