My uncle came home from Vietnam, and battled depression and tried to kill himself twice, what a completly accurate portrayal of some of stories I have heard. OK poem, i like a little less traditional ryhme scheme though.
ok for one thing anybody who murders anyobody is concidered a murder.. a lot of amaricans fight in many wars and alot of them start wars... what they did is murder.. you can't say it isn't or whatnot because it is!
i really love the poem..so moving, so true....i think it has faced opposition because it is so true ...keep up the writing....if you ever nee reading PM me or something. roly.xxx
Call me insenstive but on the poetic stylistic level this did not produce an exceptionally emotional reaction. Not bad but not great either.
There are all types of soldiers over there, I think this could be applied to some of them. Sometimes they kill in self defense, sometimes they kill the enemy, sometimes they kill by mistake, sometimes they kill in cold blood....not all of them, but I'm sure its happening at times. i feel for the young troops who never wanted to go in the first place, I really do..... Generally violent people are meant for combat as far as I'm concerned, so I don't feel so much for them.
Just thought this might be a nice place to quote one of my poems as well; it mentions British, rather than American troops, but the sentiments are the same... WE DON'T BELIEVE IN YOUR LIES ANYMORE Do you remember the days when we played, When we were children, the laughter we made, Watching the sun and the clouds gently fade in the sky. Now to the east, in some distant land, Children lay dying at a stranger's command, And no-one comes running to lend them a hand when they cry. You say it's for freedom, you say it's for peace, You say it's to make all the suffering cease, And that's why Great Britain is marching her fleets into war. Tell it to the parent who suffers and dies, Tell it to the orphan with tears in her eyes, Why can't you see, we don't believe in your lies anymore? The bombs they have fallen, the war has been won, Time to go home now and polish your guns, Now that the blood coloured late evening sun starts to fade. You did it for freedom, you did it for peace, You did it to make all the suffering cease, But just take a look at all the deceased who have paid. And still to the east, in that distant land, People lay dying at each other's hands, It don't seem like freedom at all where I stand, my good friend. Still you insist that it's true what you say, That fighting and killing was the only way, But you'll be the one who's going to pay in the end. You said it's for freedom, you said it's for peace, You said it's to make all the suffering cease, And that's why Great Britain was marching her fleets into war. Tell it to the people who suffer and die, Tell it to the children with death in their eyes, Why can't you see, we don't believe in your lies anymore? Why can't you see, we don't believe in your lies anymore?
what?! Fighting in a war does not make one murderers, or else just about every country's arm forces are full of murderers. Taking a kid, pointing a gun to his head adn blowing his headoff while he has no power, is murder. That is very different. It absolutely is NOT true. Yes, there have been horrible people in the US military, lt calley comes to mind. However, tens of millions of americans have served honorably in the US military, to call them murderers is wrong.
well then, if your uncle took a helpless kid and blew his headoff when he wasnt attacking you, then i say its a fair portrayal of your uncle, its not of your average american soldier.
I agree with Megara that you cannot call all people in the armed forces murderers. Think about it, many just signed up to get money for college and ended up getting shipped into a place where quite often its kill or be killed....kill or be killed does not equal murder.
okay this post and my internet is being a bastard and im too lazy to retype everything, but im sure ya got the jist of it.
murder [murder] n. unlawful and intentional killing of a human being; unjustifiable action causing loss of life.
Callllmmm down!! all i'm saying is that killing someone anyone in a war or not is murder... I'm suprised they havent built a big huge jail for all the people involved in the war... you meantion something about someone pointing a gun to a boys head is murder yet when people fight in a war they put guns to many little boys heads and anyones head... they kill anyone that they simply disagree with. It's all about greed and power.
I'm going to have to side with Megara again, although i think this peom is a fine portrayal of one type of soldier....he is aknowleging that there are murderers or bad people in the military, and there are also those who only have killed in self defence, or not at all. Some of you are not being fair to the good people who never wanted to even go over there in the first place.
