There is no political party that wants this. There are no pressure groups that want this. So, how can this happen as long as we have democracy in America? The closest we have ever gotten to this is the passing of the Patriot Act, which as far as I know, had the backing of all the so-called conservatives and gun nuts.
You omitted the word "yet". They will want it when your half-baked pseudo clever social reformist agenda doesn't reduce armed crime one iota. They always want just a little more. That's how gun control operates ( I nearly typed "works" but of course it doesn't work). We did it in Australia to no effect. Armed crime is way up. NZ did NOT do it, and guess what? They have more guns than us, more "assault rifles" and yet their crimes are DOWN. And "assault rifles"? Really? I owned 2. They never hurt me.
By the way, I do not trust the government. I have followed politics and current events very closely for over 50 years. I've seen the good and the bad. Our democracy is in trouble and it needs to be strengthened. Our military-industrial complex has way too much power. Almost every politician at the federal level has sold out more or less to major corporations. American has done a lot of dirty, nasty things. And yet, I know that the people still have the power through the right to vote. There are still checks and balances in the government. Politicians still occasionally respond to public opinion. I have been disappointed in Obama, but I still believe he is a good man doing his best in a broken system. Good things can still happen.
I don't know what you are referring to. What gun laws are you breaking? Here in America there is a movement to legalize marijuana that is rapidly gaining strength due to democracy, an excellent example of fighting back against the forces of repression.
There is no point in reasoning with a closed mind. I wish you well Sunfighter, but there is nothing to be gained by trying to convince you.
And so it goes.... We already have arms control. Fully automatic weapons are highly regulated and very difficult to own by a private citizen. They must be registered and already in existence, as new ones can not be offered to the public. They can not be imported. It is very hard to get permission to carry them across state lines. You must submit two sets of fingerprints, two passport photos, fill out form 4, pay a $200.00 tax, submit to an FBI background check, etc. ...and find someone willing to sell you theirs. (Simple net search) Fragment and similar grenades, bazookas, RPGs, etc. are all illegal except with an NFA Destructive Device permit, which are very rare and probably never granted to private citizens. (Simple net search) Explosives are highly regulated. Same with tanks, A-10s, Apache helicopters, and nuclear devices. So why can't we regulate semi automatic assault rifles, hollow point bullets, and body armor? All you need for protection is a short barrel 12 gauge pump shotgun with three or four shells. If you're in a firefight longer than it takes to pump out four shotgun rounds you're in deep doodoo anyway.
You sound like Obama with your common sense bullshit. How is banning an AR15 common sense, when I could take any one of my shotguns that would still be legal, and do a hell of a lot more damage. Or two of my pistols and pop off more rounds in a shorter period of time, with more mobility? You have no idea what you are talking about, you are just brainwashed by the democrats.
And let me make it clear, back when the Constitution was written the people WERE the militia. There were also laws requiring people to keep guns at some points. The founders are quoted clearly expressing individual right to bear arms. So regardless of what some corrupt judge or politician says about it now, does not annul my right that this country was fucking built on. I don't care what any of them say, they will have to come kill me before I will forfeit my weapons. And I am one of many, many people holding that sentiment. So get out of your fucking fantasy worlds people. Not only would banning guns not reduce violence, it won't ever happen. Give up the notion, or move to another country.
The gun laws Obama wants are just a common-sense reaction to the horrible, horrible murder of children in Newtown. What is your idea for protecting our children?
More crazy paranoia. No one, let me repeat, no one wants to take your guns away. Not Obama, not the Democrats, not the progressives, not the Greens, not the military, no one wants to take your guns away. But if you keep talking that way, you might fail a background check and not be able to buy any more guns.
Armed guards would be a lot more effective for one. Or allowing principles/administrators to keep secured weapons in the school and require special training. What else, how about addressing why so many youths feel alienated to this point? Researching the effects of pharmaceuticals more? People don't deal with problems anymore, they just get prescribed drugs that have a damn black label warning concerning suicidal ideation.
Universal background checks have historically led to registration, which has historically led to seizure. Senator Feinstein has been quoted saying her ultimate agenda is to disarm Americans. Obama was quoted saying he doesn't think people should be able to own guns. The administration is dancing with the UN now, which would disarm us under the small arms treaty. You have no idea what you are talking about.
A fully automatic AR15 puts out 800 round a minute, that's 13 rounds a second at about 3000 feet per second and is effective 200 yards with an open sight. Shotguns are close combat only, about 50 yards on full choke, and have a very low fire rate, that's why they see limited military use. You might be able to outdistance a shotgun blast, but not an AR 15. So what is the reason for not regulating assault type weapons anyway?
Ask parents if they want more guns in schools. The second part of your answer is pretty good and should be discussed.
LOL, ok. Who exactly is paranoid here? I'll say what the fuck I want. If anyone tells me I can't buy more guns, not that I really need to anyway, I'll just go to the black market. Easy enough now and would be even easier under the circumstances you advocate.
The AR15s sold for civilian use are not fully automatic, they are semi automatic. Do you people not know this stuff? A 30-06 hunting rifle will outdistance an AR15 and would tear a shoulder off. Should we ban hunting rifles also? The reason is I enjoy owning them and shooting them at the range. I enjoy freedom. And there is no rational argument for banning their transfer, it is banning a gun by its appearance.
These mass shootings seem to take place in gun-free zones only. I also seem to recall the parents of Newtown requesting armed personnel at their schools after this shooting.
Just as a general comment, given the success Great Britain has had with gun control, it is perfectly reasonable for anyone to wish no one owned guns. Just as a wish, you know.
