Cell phones and security cameras are surely making a difference. Nearly everybody has a camera on them at all times these days, and it's so quick and easy for anybody to call 911, which instantly sends GPS location data to the police. Criminals aren't feeling so good about their chances of avoiding capture and conviction.

    That's a good point too.

I'm not sure but you bring up a good point. I would imagine it means to fire it and either way it would be impossible to quantify the amount of time the presence of a legally owned gun has deterred a criminal activity.

I keep decent track of local news stories related to that across the country, and I would say it appears that at least 1/2 of the time someone exposing or brandishing their weapon in a justified manner stops the crime from progressing.

When a criminal act involving a gun is committed it is much more likely to be reported and documented, while the prevention of a criminal act by use of a gun is much less likely to be reported. I know for a fact that I have never made a report of the few times I've had to display a gun to prevent being accosted, although it did result in a few less cases of crime being reported.

The use of DNA evidence has made it hard as fuck to get away with crime anymore, unless you're so nutty that you don't give a shit if you get caught or not.

The new plastic guns are going to make most gun control laws irrelevant. If somebody really wants to shoot somebody, they won't have to worry about metal detectors, or even buying or stealing a gun.

Dude, gun crime and gun defence happen left and right. The media doesn't report on shit, unless it's local you won't know. They pick one big story aboud a bad guy, and one big story about a good guy (though it's never as big as the bad one, because bad guys are more fun) and that can keep them going for months.

I wasn't referring to media stories, but crime records which are a result of police reports filed.

I think people who don't lock up their guns properly should face some jail time if their guns are used in a crime. I don't know about jail time with something like this, because losing your kid is bad enough. So sad.

This year in America, more people have been killed by toddlers with guns than terrorists.

What use is a gun that's locked up? Oh hang on burglar, let me go unlock my gun safe.. lol

In my opinion, any responsible parent should keep their guns inaccessible to children that are too young to learn how to safely handle them. But that doesn't necessarily mean locked up.

How many people have been killed other ways?

I don't understand why ppl can't at least agree on assault rifles... I mean, what do you need them for? Hunting?

The only thing they need them for is armed resistance against the US Government. They think that's the real meaning of the Second Amendment. Like in the Declaration of Independence. Many of them think the government is that corrupt, that it might do a Waco-style assault again. I find their patriotism a little dubious.

Yea... but the thing is... that isn't what they end up being used for.

Top shelf of a closet? I don't know, I don't have kids so I haven't put much thought into it. If I did, I would have a quick access safe I'm sure, like one of those fingerprint readers or push button deals.

But I don't think we need anymore laws than we already have.
